Pastor claims "it is a shame for women to speak in the church" and says "when it's learning time, it's quiet time" for women only.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

On Sunday, a pastor in Phoenix, Arizona implored his female congregants not to say “amen” in church.

Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church garnered national attention in 2009 when he told his followers that he prays for the death of President Barack Obama every night. After being contacted by the Secret Service, he insisted that he “didn’t say he wanted his parishioners to attack the president, he did say the country would benefit from Mr. Obama dying.”

Pastor Anderson first attempted to justify the silencing of women by quoting 1 Timothy 2:11, “[l]et the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.”

He then asked the congregation to flip to 1 Corinthians 14, which says “[l]et your women keep silence in the churches, for it is not permitted unto them to speak, as it is commanded to be under obedience as also sayeth the law. And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is shameful for women to speak in the church.”

“Now obviously,” he continued, “before the service begins, there’s chatting and talking going on, that’s perfectly legitimate. When we all sing praises to God, of course the ladies should also lift up their voices.”

“But when it’s learning time,” Pastor Anderson said, hammering his lecturn, “it’s silence time.”

“So what it’s saying is that they,” the women, “are to learn in silence.” He then quoted 1 Corinthians 14 again, saying that “when the learning is going on, they are not permitted to speak. When the preaching of God’s word is taking place — and first of all, it’s not for a woman to be doing the preaching, and second of all, it’s not for women to be speaking.”

This guy might be the only one stupid enough to say this out loud, but you KNOW that a number of these fundamentalist assholes agree with him 100%.

I have said it before, but it bears repeating, that I will NEVER understand why so many women participate in a religion that was essentially established to oppress them and to keep them making babies, raising children, and doing housework.

Little doubt that this is the same mindset behind those much reviled purity balls

Sheep. The women who sat there, listened to this crap and didn't walk out are sheep and deserve what they get. Of course the young girls don't. Their mothers are teaching them early on to be subjugated by power mad ignorant males.

Organized religion. Allowing assholes and grifters to flourish.

Of course no one deserves to be treated like that. But what do you do? They have their "freedoms."

Me? I am tempted to go to one of that guy's sermons just to make a lot of noise!

    3. Count me in. I think we should get up a posse and go make as much noise as possible.

  2. The old Jewish thinking was noted, but not really observed. Jesus changed everything. Jesus was nice to women.

Let these characters preach to an empty room. The other guys won’t show if no one is doing the cleaning.

    1. Yep.

In fact, I think he preached celibacy too.

So I suggest the ladies who are being muzzled also done chastity belts and tell their menfolk to get it someplace else.

  6. This so-called church is listed as a hate group, along with 19 others, in Arizona. It is my fervent hope that reincarnation brings this "pastor" back as a woman in a church like his.

I'm a smart, opinionated, independent woman. I always joke that I can't ever travel to the Middle East because I'll get myself stoned right out of the airport.
Looks like it's not just the Middle East; soon, women like me may wind up getting pelted to death right here at home.

      Rainy Day Women #12 & 35

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good
They'll stone ya just a-like they said they would
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone
But I would not feel so all alone
      Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're walkin' 'long the street
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to keep your seat
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' on the floor
They'll stone ya when you're walkin' to the door
But I would not feel so all alone
      Everybody must get stoned.

They'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table
They'll stone ya when you are young and able
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to make a buck
They'll stone ya and then they'll say "good luck"
Tell ya what, I would not feel so all alone
      Everybody must get stoned.

Well, They'll stone you and say that it's the end
Then they'll stone you and then they'll come back again
They'll stone you when you're riding in your car
They'll stone you when you're playing your guitar
Yes, but I would not feel so all alone
      Everybody must get stoned.

Well, they'll stone you when you walk all alone
They'll stone you when you are walking home
They'll stone you and then say you are brave
They'll stone you when you are set down in your grave
But I would not feel so all alone
      Everybody must get stoned.

Now those lyrics will be in my head the rest of the week now. I wish I could play the harmonica like Dylan. Or Neil Young. Hell, I can't even whistle on key.

Don't let me hear any "Amens" from any of the little ladies. Y'all just sit down and shut up when the learnin' starts. What a stupid fuckin' topic for a sermon. I would hope that any woman hearing this would be offended. And if I heard an amen from a man, I believe he ought to get an elbow into his ribs immediately, plus advice on the drive home to learn to cook immediately, and to go ahead and get a subscription to Playboy magazine if he ever "wants to see a naked woman in MY fucking house."

If anyone thinks that wasn't condescending, I pity them, man or woman.

The harmonica SEEMS like it should be easy, right? LOL! I've had one sitting on the kitchen counter for a year as though one day I'm going to be able to play it. I mean, someone does it in every prison movie - how hard could it be? ;-)

There were rules in the first church. I was told once that Paul taught on that precept, because women at that time, did rely on men to teach them, as the norm was in those days. The women would (supposedly) ask questions pertaining to what they were taught, and it caused disorder while the teaching sermon was going on. Paul (supposedly) was asking women to keep silent and wait until the sermon was over. That's how it was explained to me. Take it or leave it.

Now, as far as women/men? The gospels and the rest of the NT make it clear to me, that God makes no distinctions when it comes to their worth; they are both equally worthy in God's eyes.

This AZ pastor ought to know that Jesus did say, "For in the resurrection, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven".

Disgusting that this pastor prays for the death of someone, even the POTUS. This pastor is no christian. He's a wolf. I'm finding out there are many wolves, and I'm discouraged, but, it's the wolves who are given a voice and who sabotage the NT, fora fee.

I'll leave it. The woman were probably smart and were asking things like "Why would a loving god to that?" Or "Why would a loving god to THAT?"
Probably really critical questions and we all know ya can't have a critical thinker in a religion.

These folks will never admit they're more interested in following the doctrine promoted by PAUL than the one practiced by Jesus. They are NOT Christians, they are PAULISTS.

The Gospels describe Jesus as being accepting of pretty much everyone, especially women. It was the later Fathers of the Church who had problems with women in authority. They even went so far as to change the sex of an adherent from female to male.

And it's pretty much established that Paul was gay. He didn't like it, and spoke of this affliction he needed to overcome.
