A petition to the Obama administration for the secession of Alaska back to Russia has reached more than 10,000 signatures in three days.
The petition, entitled "Alaska Back to Russia", was created by an unnamed Anchorage resident on Thursday, and has gathered signatures from Alaska and several other states. It cites historical evidence of previous visitors and claimants for ownership of the territory.
The petition must reach 100,000 signatures by April 20, 2014, in order to be considered by the current presidential administration for review and an official response. The White House petition site currently has 120 petitions gathering signatures and awaiting consideration.

As of this post the petition has 11,272 signatures.
Now I have no idea what the motivation of the "unnamed Anchorage resident" might have been to create this petition, but I can guess as to why it has received so many signatures so quickly.
So let me set the record straight. She no longer lives in Alaska!
That's right she now lives in Arizona, so giving Alaska back to the Russians will not do you any good.
Sarah Palin will not go with it!

I can't think of anything grander than to make every one of the petitioners citizens of Russia. Before they get to secede the state, they must spend 5 years living and working in Russia. One minor correction - most people who signed petition don't need to move to Russia as they are already there. This is the petition originated by Russians (writing style gives it away) with majority of the signature being Russian. Amazingly, WH site has no safeguards against this petition rights abuse whatsoever.

What people fail to realize is that if Alaska were to somehow leave the Union, the state would lose a huge hunk of Federal money, jobs and infrastructure that keeps the state running. Not to mention an exodus of those of us who would rather be Americans than Alaskans. And the military bases and personnel--Alaska doesn't get to keep those.
Can't imagine that those towns full of old believers whose ancestors left Russia during the time of Peter the Great would like going back under Russian control. That said, no kidding: what idiocy! It would actually save the USA money since Alaska is the welfare queen of the United States, though I doubt Putin would pay for every bridge, road, and rescue that the rest of the USA tax payers do. DeleteI just read one of my alaska friends fb posts. She owns a coffee joint and apparently is good friends of Willow. She posted something about giving all kids of regular customers sippy cups with their names on them. The example in the picture was of one that said "Trig."

I know that there is legitimacy in people's wishes for Alaska to be independent. Alaska could function alone, away from the US. And the US hinders many things.

The legitimacy is that Alaska couldn't last long without the Federal jobs that employ many Alaskans and the Federal military bases that support local economies.
