10 year old Yemeni girl celebrating the granting of her divorce from her adult husband. |
A child bride forced into marriage in Nigeria killed a groom and three of his friends with a poisoned meal, police said Thursday.
Fourteen-year-old Wasila Umaru was married last week to 35-year-old Umaru Sani, according to assistant superintendent Musa Magaji Majia.
Over the weekend, the groom invited a dozen friends to celebrate at his Ungwar Yansoro village, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the northern city of Kano.
The teenager told police she bought rat poison at a village market and used it to prepare a dish of rice.
"The suspect confessed to committing the crime and said she did it because she was forced to marry a man she did not love," Majia told The Associated Press.
The groom and a friend died the same day, and two other victims died later in the hospital.
Umaru is cooperating with police and likely will be charged with culpable homicide, according to Majia.
Child marriage is common in Nigeria and especially in the mainly Muslim and impoverished north, where the numbers increase in times of drought because a bride price is paid and it means one less mouth to feed. Fifty percent of Nigerian girls living in rural areas are married before they turn 18, according to the U.N. children's agency. That's a lot of child brides in a country of some 170 million people of whom half are under 18.
Before I start let me point out that the young girl in the picture above is NOT the girl in this story, however she is yet another child, this one from Yemeni, who was forced into a loveless marriage as very young girl.
Fortunatley for her she was granted a divorce, the girl in this story was not given that option.
This is a particular problem in areas with large Islamic populations, partly due to the fact that their prophet, Mohammad, took his own child bride, who was only six years old at the time. (Though to be fair he showed great restraint in not taking her virginity until she as 9 years old.)
Of course this is a despicable practice that the world should condemn, and influential nations should refuse to deal with countries where it is still practiced.
It might have made sense in ancient times for girls to marry young, since life expectancies were short, and infant mortality was high, but we live in a different time today.
Today it should be viewed as an aberration and religion should not be used to justify its continued practice.
In my opinion that fourteen year old girl was a victim, and should be released as having responded to an extreme situation in the only manner left open to her. I would not even suggest jail time, as she has clearly already served her sentence.
A heartwarming story to be sure.......
ReplyDeleteWhat's the difference between a child bride and offering up your pregnant teenaged daughter for political gain when running for high office?
ReplyDeleteGeography. Oh, and one is innocent while the other promiscuous.
DeleteSo this is what Rep. Todd Akin (dumbass-Missouri) terms "legitimate rape." Gotcha.
ReplyDeleteThe age of consent to marry in the state of Utah is 14, I wonder how many 14 yrs olds are coerced into marrying in this country?
ReplyDeleteLets ask a Mormon: What would Kolub do about these child marriages? Isn't Angry Ann working to ban things like child marriage?
ReplyDeleteI only wish i could give all those girls rat poison to take care of these disgusting and despicable "men" -- real men don't marry children!
ReplyDeleteI have a 10-year old daughter and I'm looking at that photo with a mixture of disgust (that a child that young would be forced to marry) and joy (that she was granted a divorce), and sadness (that she probably will be married off again in the next couple years).
ReplyDeleteOff topic but WTF! That's what they think. Voluntary incest.

another child, this one from Yemeni
ReplyDeleteA Yemeni girl is from Yemen, just like an Israeli girl is from Israel, not from Israeli.
I grew up in a culturally diverse neighborhood (AKA Ghetto) We were all poor, we just didn't know it. One family arranged a marriage in India, the girl was maybe 13 or 14 and the guy looked old enough to be her father. When they came back from India, her husband's parents moved with them in the same house, and we rarely, if ever, saw much of her again. I don't recall her going to school, but her kids were allowed to go.
ReplyDeleteIn the sixties, I met a young man/college student from India. He was appalled that he would have to "date" to meet women. In his country (in his class) women were brought to him. It's nice that in America, women get to choose their partners. It tickled me, that this Indian guy would have to be rejected - he was a bit chubby and not very attractive.
DeleteThey will kill her now, as "justice;" five people dead for archaic values.
ReplyDeleteSadly, the 15 yr old may be stoned to death in front of a huge crowd to make other young girls afraid to reject marriage.
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in the U.S. but my parents are immigrants from India. In the very old days, yes, most marriages were arranged. But nowadays, despite what you think, people are mostly free to marry whoever they damn please. We do have a "matchmaking culture" where parents and relatives try to fix people up, but everyone is free to say no. As for the child bride situation Anita mentioned, I have never seem or heard of such a thing in the part of India where I am from. Sure, it may happen among very poor, ignorant villagers, but I have never seen it happen in middle and upper class families. The fact that it did happen in that situation makes me sick and pissed off. If I was living in your neighborhood at that time, I would've shot his ass. I suppose some people remain trashy no matter where they go.
