Global mining giant Rio Tinto is pulling out of the Pebble mine project in Alaska, the latest blow to the controversial plan to build an open pit mine in the best wild salmon stronghold in the world.
Rio Tinto said Monday that it will donate its share in the project to a pair of Alaskan non-profits, the Alaska Community Foundation and the Bristol Bay Native Corp. Education Foundation.
Rio Tinto's decision comes after the Environmental Protection Agency moved closer in recent weeks to blocking the mine. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said Pebble would "likely have significant and irreversible negative impacts on the salmon of Bristol Bay." She said her agency would decide on action to protect the salmon under the Clean Water Act, which could lead to a veto of the project.
The British mining powerhouse Anglo American pulled out of the Pebble project last year. Now Rio Tinto is abandoning the effort as well, saying Monday "the Pebble Project does not fit with Rio Tinto's strategy."
What? Gouging giant trenches in the pristine Alaska wilderness and possible poisoning an important fishing area does not fit with Rio Tinto's strategy?
Actually I think, that in most cases, it does.

Ever since Sarah Palin helped to derail the initiative that would have stopped the Pebble Mine in its tracks, Alaskans have been fighting to keep it from going forward.
Today it looks like that has finally come to pass.
Just another left over Palin mess that Alaskans have been working to clean up a whole five years after she quit her job as Governor.

Repeal this! Fuck you, GOP
That number does NOT include those young adults 18-26 staying on their parents health plans, nor does it count people who went directly to an individual insurance company. So that number, in all reality, is probably double that.
DeleteYAY !!
Deletenow if we can eliminate the other festering eyesore the crosseyed skank left us with, that being the tarball sean parnell
ReplyDeleteGlad Pebble Mine is facing such (justified) opposition. Too bad it has already consumed so much time and money.
ReplyDeleteAnd let me say again how disappointed I am in John Shively (who stepped down as Pebble Mine CEO but who continues to chair its board).Back in the 70's Shively started out back in the 60's working for social justice and representing the best interests of Alaska Natives. Now, he's a sell-out and just a tool of corporate pillagers.
From Bristol Palin: When I come across a cool Bible passage, I’m going to pass them along to you guys. Here’s the latest: “The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.” Proverbs 10:9
ReplyDeleteAmen! The truth will always be shown.
Who believes that Bristol reads the Bible?
Who believes that Bristol is always looking for cool verses?
What's all this about the truth when the Palin Family Motto seems to be "What in it for us?" no, no, no, I mean, "Never admit the truth," and "I'll keep doing it until the courts tell me I can't." Considering all the hateful lies that Bristol has told about Levi, Nancy's latest post is a little embarrassing. I wonder who else has been lying in that family-- and about what?
barstool can't articulate a three word sentence let alone that crock
DeleteWow! That's one COOL bible passage!
DeleteNancy really knows what the kids are in to these days.
Are kids "cool" today, you guys? Yeah, I'm always looking for the cool parts of the Bible, too, also. The idea of Bristol telling people to tell the truth is just so cool, and unbelievable.
DeleteThe only time Bristol Palin has told the truth was when she was giving someone the finger.
DeleteThat lying twatwaffle. Yes, Bristol Palin, who, among other massive lies, took the stand in the David Kernell trial to testify about how she was so afraid out in the wilderness of Lake Lucille (next to the Best Western) and with no cell phone (but a land line) and with no one (only the Secret Service) to protect her. Like her mother, Bristol Palin has managed to contribute nothing positive to society. Nothing. And she never will.
I don't believe Bristol can read. And then to read the bible...BAWWAAAAHHHHH......she'd have to sober up and quit picking up strange every night to do that.
DeleteProverbs 10:9 - "(s)he who takes crooked paths will be found out." The palins have taken many crooked paths - when the hell will they be found out??
DeleteDonating shares of the corporation to AK non-profits sounds subversive.
ReplyDelete2:11...... I think you're right. I don't think this is over yet by any means. I think donating the shares is an attempt to get local and native support for the project then someone will reappear through the back door. I think they are appealing to greed to overcome objections of those who are holding this project up.

I am SHOCKED, you are talking about the FIRST LADY of the OUTDOORS, she eats organic, killing wolves from planes and helicopters is only shooing them away. Come on we are only talking about some fish, rill patriots like some toxins with their salmon.
OK for real, after reading the linked article- it all becomes clear-
Mining interests have courted Palin since her inauguration. Northern Dynasty contributed to her inaugural fund, and other mining companies have offered gifts and paid travel expenses for Palin's husband to go on fact-finding trips.
Wonder how much company stock was included in the "gifts".
If the photo is of the Freeport mine in Malaysia, you don't have to look that far. The images of Red Dog right there in Alaska are just as bad.
ReplyDeleteI've said it before, congratulations to Alaska if this obscenity is prevented. I was really concerned that big mining interests would grease enough palms to get it approved.
Well...it ain't over 'til it's over. Is it over, you think?
The B.
Doesn't "Rio Tinto" translate as "tinted (i.e., polluted) river" ??? Or something like that?
