Courtesy of the Santa Barbara Independent:
A lone gunman killed six people and injured seven more during a shooting rampage Friday night in Isla Vista that Sheriff Bill Brown called “the work of a madman.” The suspect was killed after firing on responding deputies, but it’s not clear if the fatal wound to his head was self-inflicted or the result of return fire.
The seven injured victims are being treated at Santa Barbara Cottage hospital — some for gunshot wounds, others for trauma sustained when the suspect crashed his car as he was pursued — and one recently underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries.
Initial reports suggested that two suspects were involved in the shooting, but Brown said during a 2:30 a.m. press conference Saturday morning that the gunman acted alone. Brown said the man was armed with a semi-automatic handgun and that investigators are working to determine if other weapons were involved.
The names of the victims and the suspect have not been released. Brown, however, confirmed that written and video material left by 22-year-old Elliot Rodger of Calabasas in the hours and days leading up to the shooting is being reviewed as evidence in the massacre. “It appears to be connected,” he said.
The suspect left a video entitled "Elliot Rodger’s Retribution" (Old video link replaced with new one.) in which he laid out exactly what he was going to do and blamed it on girls not being attracted to him, and stating that he was a virgin that had never even been kissed even though he is the "perfect guy."
The video is incredibly disturbing so watch it at your own risk.
So much for the NSA spying on everything we do. If THIS did not get their attention it is hard to imagine what would.
I assume that the NRA will suggest that the only way to prevent other slaughters such as this one is to arm every sorority girl in America. Because heaven forbid that there is a lunatic out there who CANNOT get their hands on a weapon when they have murder on the mind.
Update: Apparently both his parents and social worker tried to warn police:
A lawyer for Peter Rodger said that his son, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome as a child, had been receiving psychiatric treatment from several mental health professionals.
His parents contacted police after being alarmed by earlier YouTube videos “regarding suicide and the killing of people”, said Alan Shifman, the attorney.
The police interviewed Rodger and found him to be “polite and kind”, though noted that he had trouble making friends, he said.
A social worker, who worked with Rodger, also contacted police about him last week. Police said they were investigating a video in which a man complained of rejection by women and threatened revenge.
Looks like there were people trying to help him, but they simply did not understand the depth of his anger and feelings of isolation.
Personally I think that the minimum that should have been done was to make sure he had no access to weapons. I have worked with a lot of angry, and depressed, young men, and keeping guns away from them is always our top priority.
Update 2: It's even worse than we thought.
I don't remember a time where there were this many shootings. It seems to be a daily event. What the hell is going on?

You guys....my daughter lives on the block where one of the shootings happened! She sent me a text this morning to let me know that she and her boyfriend were okay.
DeleteI can't...this is too much. Hubby is on the east coast and he heard the news and was frantic with worry until I told him that they were okay. THIS SHIT HAS TO STOP!
Latest press conference.
DeleteThe net fatalities remains the same at 6 murdered and 1 dead gunman. 3 people were stabbed to death at the apt, 2 women shot and killed outside the sorority house and 1 man shot and killed near the deli.
The killer also used his car to ram some other victims.
@ Gina M So sorry to hear, I can't imagine not knowing when something like this happens, it's any parent's worst nightmare.

Too easy availability of guns with hi-capacity mags and semi- auto. Also the major price drops of said guns. The Texas sniper was an ex-marine. IOW, had some marksmanship training. Yesterdays clown was a kid off the street.
DeleteA gunman went on a drive-by shooting rampage on Friday night in a Santa Barbara student enclave resulting in at least seven people dead, including the gunman. The suspect’s name has not been released, however, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown and a possible link to an ominous YouTube video . The nearly 7 minute video uploaded on YouTube is titled ‘Retribution’ in which Elliot Rodger describes rejection from women. He states in the video, “I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you.”
ReplyDeleteHe goes on to say, “If I can’t have you girls, I will destroy you,” Rodger goes on to describe what he calls being treated like ‘scum’ while women ‘gave themselves to other men.’
He goes on to say in his troubled rant that he hates “all of you sexually active men.” At the beginning of the clip he says, “I’m 22-years-old and still a virgin.”
He also died a virgin.
In between voicing his disdain for others, he laughs quietly as if he’s in B-movie. The seemingly contrived rant, with the laughter, portrays a troubled soul who blames the world for his loneliness and lack of a sex life.
Witnesses described the incident, saying they saw a black BMW speeding through the streets, spraying bullets at people and various targets near El Embarcadero and Segovia Roads and the top of the loop along Del Playa.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said at 9:33 p.m. the suspect exchanged gunfire with deputies then veered down Del Playa and crashed into a parked car. Deputies found the suspect inside the BMW dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Brown said he did not know if the suspect was shot and killed by deputies or if the wound was self-inflicted, according to KEYT.
The sheriff reported that a semi automatic handgun was recovered from the scene and said he believes the suspect acted alone.
The sheriff confirmed seven people were killed, which includes the gunman; seven others are hospitalized either with gunshot wounds or traumatic injuries — one with life-threatening injuries; there are nine separate crime scenes reported.
At this time, the sheriff is not releasing the suspect’s name, although he has been identified but he describe the suspect “as severely mentally disturbed” and added, “This was a premeditated mass murder.”

...In the seven-minute video, titled “Elliot Rodger’s Retribution,” Rodger lays out exactly why he feels so alienated and how he plans to kill to get some sort of revenge on the world. The latest, and last, video on his YouTube channel is one of many in which the young man complained about life being “unfair” and girls not finding him attractive.
ReplyDelete“All those girls that I’ve desired so much, they would’ve all rejected me and looked down upon me as an inferior man if I ever made a sexual advance towards them while they throw themselves at these obnoxious brutes,” Rodger says to the camera as he sits in his car alone. “I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you. You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one the true alpha male.”
“After I’ve annihilated every single girl in the sorority house, I’ll take to the streets of Isla Vista and slay every single person I see there,” he continues. “If I can’t have you, girls, I will destroy you.”

In the ominous video, a man, who identifies himself as 22-year-old Elliot Rodger, sits in a parked car and says he has felt lonely and rejected for eight years.
ReplyDeleteHe blames his unhappiness on women who have rejected him. He also says he wants to kill men “just for the crime of living a better life” than him.
“If I can’t have you, girls, I will destroy you,” he says. “You deserve to be annihilated, and I will give that to you.”
Roger is stoic as he details his plans to “slay every single person” he sees on the street.
“I’ll take great pleasure in slaughtering all of you. You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one, the true alpha male,” he says.
“I will be a god compared to you. You will all be animals. You are animals, and I will slaughter you like animals,” he continues. “I hate all of you. Humanity is a disgusting, wretched, depraved species.”

Many police forces spend time monitoring the internet for gang activity. They must also scrutinize for human trafficking, pedophiles and the other crimes. Is there any group or institution that looks out for these types of perps that would just be lonely and dangerous?
A disturbing video entitled “Elliot Rodger’s Retribution” was posted to YouTube the day before the shooting. In it, a young man who identifies himself as Elliot Rodger describes his plans to launch an assault targeting women at a sorority house as payback for his life of “loneliness, rejection, and unfulfilled desires.”
ReplyDelete"I will slaughter every stuck up, blonde slut I see inside there ... You will finally see that I am in truth the superior one, the true alpha male," the young man says in the video. He then describes how he plans to "take to the streets of Isla Vista and slay every single person."
Loneliness and envy factor heavily in other videos that appear to have been uploaded by Rodger. In one posted May 23, he films a couple at the beach from afar.
"I hate them," he says at one point.

DeleteI think the vid "Retribution" was uploaded a few hours before the shooting. Even tho he said "Tomorrow" which would of been today...
My initial impression, watching the video only once, is a self-absorbed narcissist who I doubt ever had any facility for empathy, even before he chose to turn violent. He's not upset, he's not crying, he's all frosty calm and finality as he chooses to play god.
ReplyDeleteHe'd be no less mentally ill if he was getting new tail every night, and it isn't looks that kept others away, but surely survival instinct and recognizing a dangerous individual when they listened to him talk.
I'm intensely curious what kind of family raises someone like this to 22 without noticing, or deliberately ignoring, such festering lethality.
I heard there was a recent problem with the son and the authorities were contacted but nothing came of it. At the time, no indication of a gun.
DeleteSince this involves so many young people I would think all parents would be deeply moved by what happened to the innocent and the tragedy for so many families.
The NRA must have plenty to say. Sarah Palin, family value queen, must be typing away at this very moment. She is so relevant and all. I am sure she knows how to blame this on the President and First Lady.
"I'm intensely curious what kind of family raises someone like this to 22 without noticing, or deliberately ignoring, such festering lethality."
Delete--------------------------------------------
If you have ever tried to force someone to get help who does not want help, you would not assume that the only two options are that the family didn't notice or purposely ignored danger signs.
You might ant to look up Aspergers, that emotionally detached/lack of empathy is characteristic of the syndrome. It's often how/why it is diagnosed - a new baby in the house and the "Aspie" is extremely jealous and won't bond and may even harm the newborn.
DeleteBut sonny boy is driving a Beemer? Unless he stole it, it appears mommy and daddy were throwing money at the problem. More than enough money to buy those guns - they are culpable, too.
DeleteThere's some updated info coming out now:
ReplyDeleteThe police were recently alerted to Rodgers potential for violence by a family member and, separately, by a social worker. Supposedly, the police interviewed him and found no weapons. The family lawyer said Rodgers had Aspergers syndrome and was seeing multiple therapists.
http://abcnews.go.com/US/killed-mass-murder-shooting-uc-santa-barbara/story?id=23853918
So how did he purchase the gun? And did anyone know he bought it?
Sorority "girls" represent a tiny portion of the women that attend college.
ReplyDelete"On the day of retribution, I am going to enter the hottest sorority house of UCSB and I will slaughter every single spoiled, stuck-up blond slut I see inside there. All those girls that I’ve desired so much. They would have all rejected me and looked down upon me as an inferior man if I ever made a sexual advance towards them. While they throw themselves at these obnoxious brutes."
DeleteThis is what we might call the take-away quote from a final video from Elliot Rodger, before he went on a mass shooting rampage leaving 7 people dead. (The video is below and here's the transcript.) It's hard to think of a more succinct distillation of young male anti-woman rage, punctuated infinitely by the fact Rodger made good on his threat. But the basic storyline is also a pretty common one, the mentality of innumerable PUAs and/or the more extreme self-styled Mens Rights Activists.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/i-will-slaughter-every-single-spoiled-stuck-up-blond-slut
No, the NRA, if they speak, will blame this on Obama closing mental hospitals, on the antichurch liberal education system, on the girls who ignored this poor fella, on it being spring, on anything and everything but him having access to a semi-automatic weapon that they will tell you is for hunting' possum in California..for food.
ReplyDeleteNarcissistic qualities for sure.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to know where the semi-automatic came from?
Do people really need semi-automatics? For what? Hunting? The shooter's family now knows it was their son and it is said he was troubled. Not many details. He attends a community college and comes from the wealthy enclave of Montecito. Tracing the semi-automatic will be paramont. Also Elliot Roger's mental condition.
How can we possibly know all the tormented souls out there living some secret hell?
I suppose his family will be a focus, as I understand he was still living at home. They may have had the money to help him have his own place but if he wasn't stable or well enough, like other parents, they must have thought it was best they take care of him.
Santa Barbara killer — son of 'Hunger Games' assistant director
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/deranged-santa-barbara-california-killer-tied-premeditated-youtube-video-reports-article-1.1804354
I read that his father is an assistant director on the "Hunger Games" movies. He drove a BMW, seems to have plenty of $$$. Maybe he would have been better off having less, having to work for what he had. So sad that all those innocent young people had to die because of his mental problems. His serious mental problems had to be obvious if he could not get a girl to go out with him.
ReplyDeleteHis father is famous for helping to make The Hunger Games, the futuristic Hollywood blockbuster about teenagers pitted against each other in a fight to the death.

Elliot Rodger's family contacted police last week out of concern over disturbing videos he posted
Officers interviewed him and found him to be a 'perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human'

NRA, how are you going to take away the guns from people who are not mentally capable of possessing them?
ReplyDeleteOne more example of how so-called men believe women owe them sex, owe them their attention.
ReplyDeleteand when they get a similar call in the future perhaps the police won't depend on officers to evaluate, but on experts instead. Ted Bundy presented as a "perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human being" too. It seems to be fairly normal for someone this kind of crazy to present quite well.
ReplyDeleteYes. When the experts are calling the police to report a threat you already have a more expert opinion than the notoriously well trained officers...
DeleteWhere did he get the gun? Did he have his own apartment? A roommate?
ReplyDeletePress conference said 3 guns were legally purchased and registered to him. And it appears he stabbed to death 3 people in his "residence".
DeleteThis makes me sick. I guess the day this craziness stops making us sick, we are lost.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with law enforcement in this country is that they really are not set up to do intervention---basically they are clueless unless you have already broken the law. Weren't they warned by the therapist of the Colorado shooter as well? There are not real protocols in place to stop tragedies like this except of course to make it hard as hell for people to get a gun. But that won't be happening anytime soon. Of course at this point there are about a million ways to get a gun without going to an actual dealer.
The only way this will end is if we are labeled a red zone internationally and there are warnings about entering the U.S
because our gun laws are insane. Hurt some huge corporations money---they may get to screaming about gun control.
How did the parents and police let him out of the house alone even after he posted the above linked video? Even with video warnings and clear intent to commit mass murder why is it the police could do nothing? This is similar to the Virginia Tech massacre in that a college teacher warned about him also.
ReplyDeleteI think he lived in Isla Vista in an apartment. There is a 140 page manifesto. I would like to know about the gun.
DeleteHow will the NRA spin this? Did you hear the father of Chris Martinez? A 20 year old boy that went to the store and was killed.
These types of mass murders have been going on forever... We just hear about them now that we have global communication available:1984 James huberty. 1966 Charles Whitman. 1986 Patrick Scherril. 1973 Robert Essex. 1949 howard unrah. 1927 Andrew kehoe. Anyone who can do these terrible crimes must have a mental imbalance. They do not think like healthy people. We need to pray for them, but especially pray for the innocent victims and their families.
ReplyDeleteActually, we need healthy gun laws and a better mental health system. . . . .
DeleteMass murder, serial killers, diabolical plots, perversions of all sorts... none of it is new. And there will always be aberrations.
DeleteWe can do more to have a safe and sane society. We don't have to settle for the belief in more and more mass killings and a world where no one can go out to eat or a mall etc without expecting to be shot down. Everyday parents send their children to school, now they have to figure the kid could come home in a body bag, it's the American way. Boy, aren't you lucky if your kid is only maimed.
"Looks like there were people trying to help him, but they simply did not understand the depth of his anger and feelings of isolation."
ReplyDelete-------------------------------------
This is not necessarily the case. They may have understood very well how serious his condition was, but it is extraordinarily difficult to to force people to get help who do not want help.
Proving that an adult is not competent to make their own decisions is an extremely difficult process. The standard is generally that the person is an imminent danger to themselves or others before taking away their rights to self-determination, but unfortunately that can often only be determined in hindsight, after a tragedy has happened.
Anyone who has fought desperately to get help for someone who has refused help, especially in the case of paranoid disorders, knows how agonizing and terrifying it is.
We can't force people to get help, but maybe we could make it just a teensy-weensy bit tougher to get access to automatic weapons. Reduce the slaughter maybe?
DeleteThis gunman had 3 guns purchased legally and registered to him. If such a person "refuses help", maybe that could be a reason to rescind the registration and prevent further purchases.
DeleteThis person also appears to have stabbed to death 3 people at his apt. so obviously he was homicidal. But drive-by stabbings might have fewer fatalities than drive-by with a Glock.

Spoiled Hollywood Leftist Elliot Rodger Mass Murder in Isla Vista at UCSB. I hate being cynical, but it appears that the gun control groups and the mainstream media are more interested in protecting the image of their progressive Hollywood allies than they are telling the story of what happened last night. Don't know if Rodger was a Democrat, but he was a classic spoiled-brat postmodern leftist.

So . . . . .this makes no sense at all since the poster has no idea if the killer had political leanings or not. And . . . it doesn't matter. Left wing or right wing-- guns suck and they should be kept out of the hands of whack jobs.
DeleteMoronic post by the way. Not knowing if the kid even paid attention to politics or not but then calling him a leftist. Completely asinine.
What the hell are you talking about? If anything, this is about the shocking rise in autism disorders in the US.
Delete"(CNN) -- One in 68 U.S. children has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a 30% increase from 1 in 88 two years ago, according to a new report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention....
... Children with autism continue to be overwhelmingly male. According to the new report, the CDC estimates 1 in 42 boys has autism, 4.5 times as many as girls (1 in 189)."
http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/27/health/cdc-autism/
We have a nightmare of unfolding, and no one is dealing with it. Our children's brains are being damaged, and no one has a solution to stop it. First Sandy Hook, and now this horrible event. And the ASD children who are suffering will pay for this, even though most are peaceful and lonely.
Rodger did have political leanings but more like Hitler. It's in his manifesto. He believed that to rid the world of evil (sex) that women should be put in concentration camps so he as God could enjoy watching them starve to death. All men on earth would never see women ever. He would keep a few select women in a secret hidden lab for insemination.
DeleteRodger was also extremely racist. He didn't have political leanings in the sense you @9:19 are thinking of in terms as left vs. right. He wanted laws that treat women as sub-humans because they are basically flawed, defective and have sub-human minds. He wanted to rule the earth as his rightful place was a God and he was going to go out proving it.
He wasn't left or right politically. His politics was that of WoW - World of Warcraft online gaming. He lived in another reality altogether and was very mentally ill. Has ZERO to do with politics however you wish to try and spin it.

ReplyDeleteWe've got a never-ending media conversation about whether black people have a "culture of violence." We have a massive Islamaphobia industry. But angry white dudes shoot up innocent people again and again and again and somehow it's always a conversation about gun control and not white male culture— a conversation, by the way, that never leads to more gun control.
