Man finds bullet proof vest, puts it on, and asks friend to shoot him. I bet you know what happens next.

Courtesy of WYFF:

A 25-year-old man who put on a bullet proof vest and asked to be shot was killed Wednesday morning, according to the coroner, and an 18-year-old girl is charged in the death.

The shooting was reported on Broadmouth Church Road at 2:40 a.m., according to Sheila Cole with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.

Anderson County Deputy Coroner Don McCown said Blake Randall Wardell was hanging around with some other people in a garage at that location when he put on a bullet proof vest they had found.

Wardell asked his friend, Taylor Ann Kelly, of Anderson to shoot him. She fired, and the shot from the small caliber weapon went above the Kevlar of the vest and into Wardell’s heart, killing him, McCown said.

The eighteen year old woman has been charged with manslaughter and could spend up to five years in prison.

There was a scene in a movie called Kick-Ass where a young girl put on a bullet proof vest and her father shot her in order to demonstrate what it felt like before they went out together to fight crime.

I don't know if that movie influenced these two people or not, but it is very clear that they lacked the proper respect for what guns could do and saw them simply as toys.

THAT is one of the side effects from living in a society that panders to gun nuts and which seems to revere the right to own weapons over every other right that we have in this country.

I feel badly for the young woman, but clearly the man was really too stupid to live, and was essentially living on borrowed time.

Again, I am weeping for children growing up in our stupid gun culture. They become adults who don't understand the true reality of what an actual bullet can do.

Just so IM readers won't jump to conclusions: DO NOT blame either drugs or alcohol apparently. Even though the shooting was reported at about 2:45 AM police report:

"Deputies said they found no evidence of heavy alcohol or drug use" http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/05/15/sc-woman-fires-shot-at-friend-to-test-his-bulletproof-vest-but-she-misses-and-hes-dead/

Possessing and operating guns while stupid? Maybe so.

"Heavy" alcohol use doesn't preclude the question of who was holding his can of Bud.

    Too dumb to breed!

"Hey, you! Out of the gene pool."

I have no sympathy for people that stupid. Their parents, maybe, but not them.

  5. The best he could have expected was a bad bruise and a broken rib or two. Angela is right, most of these gun nuts have never seen an actual gunshot victim and live in a fantasy world.

The manly men of Open Carry Texas targeting women results in threats, attacks: You “motherf*cking whore”

... The woman—a high school teacher who asked not to be identified—quickly got pummeled with text messages and voicemails, copies of which she provided to Mother Jones. Callers told her she was a “stupid bitch” and “motherfucking whore.” “They fought for their right to carry guns,” said another. “You’re a piece of shit.” One caller threatened to come after her with a gun.

She told Mother Jones, “I really felt strongly about not changing my cellphone number—I’m not going to be intimidated. But it just got to the point where it’s not worth it.”

Over the next four days she received nearly two dozen such calls and text messages. Someone put her information into a phony profile on a large e-commerce site, and she got a barrage of calls about agricultural products and security systems. “I really felt strongly about not changing my cellphone number—I’m not going to be intimidated,” she told me. “But it just got to the point where it’s not worth it.”

The teacher from Plano grew up hunting — she is not a member of Moms Demand Action, but thanks to the extremism she’s witnessed from Open Carry Texas, she plans to join. Plano police records who that two other people called 911 with concerns about the demonstration that day, both of which were men. Their phone numbers were not published by Open Carry Texas members. She was worried for her safety, saying, “I felt that if I walked out someone was going to be standing there.” But she said, “I think they are very weak men. They use their guns because that’s all they have. If you know what I mean.”

This still doesn't top the idiot who bought a bulletproof vest, put it on and asked his friend to stab him with a hunting knife...

-And to be fair to Kick Ass, they exaggerated the effect of the shot and showed the girl thrown about 15 feet backwards from the impact. If anyone saw that and thought: "oh yeah, I'm totally doing THAT", they deserve whatever happens.

Gryphen, as a long time follower of IM, I agreed with every comment you made regarding this sad story until I read the last paragraph. Sadly, you lost me with your comment "...but clearly the man was too stupid to live..".

But I think Gryphen is right. It is literally true that this guy was too stupid to live.

I'm a sucker for happy endings and that's a great story. Couldn't stop laughing actually. Too bad about the manslaughter rap, she was just a good freedom lover and doing what she was told. DZ

Why were charges pressed? What makes this a crime and other's "accidents"?? Yeah, a 25 year old died and people are grieving, but he ASKED to be shot. The teen's only mistake was the same one he made, she saw the bullet proof vest and thought "He's wearing a bullet proof vest, what's the worst that could happen?"
