There is virtually NO real Alaska, in Alaska reality shows.

Courtesy of Washington Post:

About the only reality show that looks real to the people who live here is “Deadliest Catch,” which has picked up 10 Emmys in nine seasons. Most of the rest do a spectacular job misrepresenting the state and the people who call it home. Some, like “Ultimate Survival Alaska,” are fake, fake, fake. Others, such as “Wild West Alaska,” make us look like deranged misfits. And then there is “Alaska Moose Men,” which would be better if it were about creatures who are half-human, half-moose, as its title suggests.

Into this mix comes MTV’s planned reality series “Slednecks.” Segments being screened for advertisers are reported to feature snow-machine riders (snowmobile riders, for you in the Lower 48) crashing, arguing and jumping into a frozen lake through a hole in the ice. There will no doubt be plenty of backwoods beer-drinking, bear-fearing and beard-sporting, too, for people who haven’t gotten enough from the other Alaska shows.

Whatever reality “Slednecks” depicts, it will probably have little to do with how most Alaskans live. Alaska isn’t as wild and crazy as seen on TV.

The average Alaskan is more at home in or near civilization than in the wild, though you wouldn’t know it from watching “Life Below Zero.’’ That’s the show in which Sue Aikens lives “all alone’’ at the Kavik River Camp — except for the film crew, the Internet connection and the many visitors who drop in to go hunting, fishing or hiking. She’s a rarity.

More than half of Alaska’s 730,000 residents live in Anchorage or just north in suburbs known as the Valley. (Former governor and Wasilla mayor Sarah Palin grew up a Valley girl.) Add in the people of Fairbanks and Juneau, the capital, and you’ve captured two-thirds of the state population.

I don't think that columnist Craig Medred is suggesting that we don't have some wild and wooly folks, because we most certainly do. And the farther outside of Anchorage and Fairbanks you go, the woolier they get.

However though Alaska itself is a place of great beauty and dangerous extremes, the people here are essentially like everywhere else in the world. Albeit with prominently displayed nipples most of the year.

My daughter recently returned from visiting a friend in Florida, and her mother in Georgia and proudly told me that the most often asked question is no longer about Sarah Palin. Now it is "Does everybody in Alaska have their own reality show?"

And you know some days it seems that they do.

However as my daughter, who works in the industry, points out over, and over, and over again, NOTHING on a reality show is real. NOTHING.

And that includes that iconic photo at the top.

I now have a pretty good idea of what went on that day, and not only did Palin NOT shoot that caribou, but the caribou was not even actually wild.

In fact Medred describes a similar scenario for another reality show:

When “Wild West Alaska” went on a wild elk hunt, the stars scrambled into a floatplane at Lake Hood in Anchorage and made a short hop across Cook Inlet — to a place where the only elk are at the farm where the hunt was staged.

In other words the animal that they shot for the show was raised on a farm, cared for by the owners as if it were a pet, and then slaughtered on camera for the viewing pleasure of idiots who think that they are looking at life in Alaska.

I already knew about this, just like I know about the similar circumstances surrounding Palin's infamous caribou kill

No, Alaska is an amazing place, with colorful characters. But the people who appear on television are playing a character in order to attract viewers and increase ratings.

And that goes for a certain half term quitter, who may have been playing a reality show character her entire life.

Joey also tells about his foot surgery and some about his accident. He is shady. He also seems to follow another's instructions for when he can mention Bristol (and vise versas).

Mother's Day and Joey is still crippled and not much pressure on his foot. Neither Joey or Bristol mention how much he would need to be carried and helped for a boat ride. How realistic is it to think Bristol and Tripp took him to the boat and propped him up so he could pose with Tripp? They may both be faking about the Kenai Lake on the Kenai Peninsula boat ride. Alaska is beautiful but if you went boating with your lover who is nursing a ft like Joey's, it would be a big deal. Wouldn't Bristol mention caring for him, well wishes and getting better encouragement? Her blog leaves out a big part of what Joey's life is about at this time. Adrenaline Junkies hit walls and dead ends, that is a big part of the lifestyle. There is a long healing period. Bristol or Nancy are just not real and they are faking in regard to her Mother's Day post. The date of the pictures with Tripp are dubious at best. And why don't they reveal the facts about Joey? Will it reflect bad on other Sled-necks? Sled-neck films? Is it Ski-Doo that the Palin's don't want marred with a crippled junkie? Joey isn't hiding it, what is with Bristol/Nancy?

Are Tripp's teeth baby or are those his big teeth?

HGTV even has an Alaska-centered show. I had to laugh when, during the only episode I've watched, the potential home owners were stunned to learn that there could be about 6 feet of snow. This wasn't per storm; this was the annual total. Well, this winter we had over 138 inches of snow in Traverse City, MI, and nearby Petoskey had 199 inches. I'll just stay put and enjoy our snow next winter; no need to travel to the Alaskan frontier.

Flying Wild Alaska was ril, I mean real.

Based out of Unalakleet, Bethel, Nome and other real rural outposts.

The family owned business only went along with a reality show for their daughter Arielle's celebrity aspirations, something they were upfront about, but they were very down to earth and you can't fake flying in one of the most extreme environments in the country. I miss that show, but it did live its course.

I can never figure out how someone as boring, talentless and vindictive to people who weren't family and ass-kissing friends (I'm talking about Bristol) could be given a platform so many times to showcase nothing. The Palin's need to stay out of the public eye if they want to be 'left alone,' and not criticized for their many crimes against humanity, primarily being Ugly Americans.

I do agree the Sarah-shoots-the-caribou was fake. Every time the camera showed Sarah taking aim (after Chuck loaded her gun for her) the next view was of the animal, fuzzy and off there in the distance. They camera went back and forth between the two shots, Sarah taking aim again, and the caribou still standing there. Sarah missed four times and the caribou kept standing there, letting the bullets whiz past him without flinching. During the fifth attempt, Sarah seemed more surprised than anyone, "You hit it!" "I did?" "Yeah, you really got him." "I did? Yeah, I did." It was the worst piece of acting that I ever saw.

I know someone who was part of a reality show for a while. Everything about it was fake, from the location to the scripted conversations. They were scripted in the sense that the director prompted the people about how to react, telling them to say, "I'm so happy that you made me come here. That was great!" We watched them film that part a second time, when the director changed the words a little bit and coached the girls to sound more enthusiastic.

That might be the root of Palin’s problem. She really thinks she is live on TV all the time. It would explain her inability to understand her children. There is no empathy there, no sane person would raise their children in such a disconnected manner. Simply sending Track down the road so her political career would take off; then embarrassing her pregnant daughter on the national political scene; being so remote her other daughter who is screaming for attention has to burglarize a house and then essentially pawning off her DS son so she can grab the rope of celebrity? That is a pile of seriously bad parenting.

Here's a good one for ya, Gryphen! It's so disturbing these people exist in public service.

Virginia official: Non-Christian public prayer violates my rights ‘because I don’t believe that’

“The freedom of religion doesn’t mean that every religion has to be heard,” said Al Bedrosian, who sits on the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors. “If we allow everything, where do you draw the line?”

The Republican said Monday, after the high court ruled 5-4 that legislative prayer did not violate the constitutional prohibition on government establishment of religion, that he would not vote to allow non-Christians to deliver invocations.

“I think America, pretty much from Founding Fathers on, I think we have to say more or less that we’re a Christian nation with Christian ideology,” Bedrosian said. “If we’re a Christian nation, then I would say that we need to move toward our Christian heritage.”

Those remarks echoed statements he made several years ago in an editorial published in the Roanoke Times, where he described freedom of religion as a “hoax” and claimed “the global warming crowd worships the environment as god, the abortionist has the death of unborn babies as their god, and the homosexuals have sexual freedom as their god.”

“The real battle is keeping the name of Jesus as Lord,” Bedrosian wrote in 2007. “The name Jesus is what makes us a Christian people and a Christian nation. This is why we must continue our heritage as a Christian nation and remove all other gods.”

That’s what Bedrosian intends to do in his position as county supervisor, saying he would reject any request by any non-Christian adherent to deliver a religious or secular invocation.

“I would say no,” Bedrosian said. “That does not infringe on their freedom of religion. The truth is you’re trying to infringe on my right, because I don’t believe that.”

My solution to the problem would be to hold a "moment of silence" at the beginning of meetings. Then people could pray or could try to remember if they should stop at the grocery store on the way home or think about how to address an issue that might come up. Respectful to all; insulting to none; and it preserves our notion of religious freedom (or freedom from religion, take your pick). It's done at the White House when there is a commemoration of some ghastly event; it's done in many places on Armistice Day at 11:00am to remember WWI. It's a shame it didn't occur to the Supremes that it would solve the problem presented to them in the litigation.

I don't know why they have to do anything. Meetings are long enough and people are very busy. If you really feel the need to pray, show up 5 minutes early and do it in inside your own head. Same thing if you want a "moment of silence."

This is all about flaunting how religious these people are. Look how loud they can pray!

      Delete
    3. Anonymous3:22 PM

I had a long career (have been retired a number of years now) and never once did we pray before any of the thousands of meetings I attended throughout the years! I would have been against it then as I am today.

Prayer has no place in the work place or in government. Go to church and pray or do so at home or outdoors.

I detest the right pushing religion and their Christian faith (that many of them don't practice at all!) down the throats of others.

All you have to do is get up and walk out of the prayer session of a meeting or call on top management to stop doing it. It's complete bullshit and helps nothing - it divides!

No reality are real. It'd be disastrous for anyone to go into tv and not plan anything a little. I mean, there are camera and they have to follow you.

I've always thought if they wanted a hunting show, Chuck Heath would be a perfect host. Hes a woods God basically. He went on a weeklong fall hunt 3 mos aftet heart surgery. That's amazing constitution right there.

TV is to show a lesson in some way, or to convey another way of life or activities. I enjoy the parenting shows that's not all perfect little scenarios but are REAL. Ones that show the downs as well as ups. There's a reason pregnancy in general has declined (not just econ related.) and teen pregnancy are especially declined in recent years.
Parenting is hard every single day. Kids push buttons and it takes time to learn and perfect a method of reigning them in. I believe showing the realness cuts down in stupid mommy wars where arrogant, showy moms look stupid with their humblebrags. No one likes the "my life and child are so perfect" mom. People love the real mom, who can joke about tantrums while asking for tips on how to make bedtime easier.

I used to watch Deadliest Catch until it got old. But that's most shows. After a few seasons, I get bored. It's hard for even A listers to sustain a whole season and get renewed.

What ever happened to good old documentaries? Remember "Alone In the Wilderness"? This documentary tells the story of Dick Proenneke who, in the late 1960s, built his own cabin in the wilderness at the base of the Aleutian Peninsula, in what is now Lake Clark National Park. Using color footage he shot himself, Proenneke traces how he came to this remote area, selected a homestead site and built his log cabin completely by himself. The documentary covers his first year in-country, showing his day-to-day activities and the passing of the seasons as he sought to scratch out a living alone in the wilderness.

There was no camera crew. There was no Hollywood script. He didn't do this for the goal of making money. He filmed this himself to show to his relatives in the lower 48 what life was like living in Alaska. Now THIS is real life. Please google his name and you'll find videos you can watch. This has been shown on PBS multiple times.

There are no real reality shows. Years ago there were real variety shows, documentaries, and real comedy on television. Now we have hundreds of channels, and there's nothing worth watching.
The first "Real" reality show I remember was "Real Life" in the early days of MTV.
I've been to Alaska twice, and nothing I remember is shown on Alaska Reality Shows. The cities and towns are the same as everywhere. There are tract homes, properties that are close together, and communities with businesses. I had a much better time renting a car and "roughing it" than we did on the cruise.
Alaska's best resources are it's people. They really took the time to help people out when needed and most were like the salt of the earth. .

  23. Slednecks is headquartered in FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA.

Slednecks is NOT AN ALASKAN entity.

Joey Junker is involved with Slednecks.

Joey Junker is involved with Bristol Palin.

Bristol Palin and her mother are sure to be involved in the new show.

O/T For the new people of Immoral Minority, this oldie but goodie post below probably made Sarah see double.

A Tale of Two Babies by Sarah Palin.

She was right in the middle of trying to convince the people of Alaska that, despite all appearances, she was indeed pregnant with her fifth child,

      From the above post:

"Exactly why did she feel the need to lie about her pregnancy?"

Thanks. It will be wonderful when more people can see the real reality of Sarah Palin and family. Charlatans and frauds all of the adults.

What blew me away, not on the linked IM post, was the photo of Levi AT THE HOSPITAL holding Trig. I had mine close together, so none were "ahem" "D a t i n g ", but most women I know wouldn't want their daughter's boyfriend bonding with their newborn, the time they allow for mothers and children is precious and goes by too quickly, especially a child with difficulties.

Did anyone pay attention to Sarah on Mother's Day?

Sally Heath? Her son is pretty good about putting up a good Christian son front. He has another wife now and 2 more mother's to honor.

Joey is as phony as any Palin. He is a salesman and performer. I don't believe the mother day hype for a minute. Was that Tripp with the teeth? Or has he already been fitted with dentures? It looks like the tooth fairy came to see him. I hope he made out with cash and not candy.

She nothing but fat ass liar. She does not live alone always has people there helping. Has all her food flown in. There is nothing remote about her living out there. Thats why she only shoots birds and misses half the time. She is the real deal if that means she will annoy you to death with her stupid analogies and constant complaints

Sue is an idiot... she spends her entire time trying to give her mine provoking euphemisms which are absolutely lame!! Dumb arse!! Oh yeah and now she is suing National Geographic to scam them out of money

  29. Sue Aiken just bought all new left handed guns because of her injuries from last year's crash. And ended the episode swinging a sledgehammer right handed at the evil snowmobile that SHE crashed. I guess her shoulder isn't too injured after all. It's all bullshit.

Exactly. Nothing about her or what the portray on tv is real except her constant lies about how she does everything by herself

I cant believe anybody who says an accident was "financially devastating " then goes out to destry a brand new $10k snowmobile that they clearly have no idea how to operate? What kind of moron drives a machine this way the first day they get it before they even know the machine? In Canada this would be sacreligous. More money than brains clearly! Maybe she was talking to herself in the third person again? The smarter one clearly knew a sledge hammer was the answer!

  31. I am a fan of the show "life below zero" because it actualy does show a decent survival mentality. However sue kavik is a f'n idiot. She tries to track caribou on a snow machine and expects them not to run. She is so out of shape its not even funny. She cant process a buck without freaking out and running out of breath and complaining about how cold it is. I understand it's cold but someone who live that lifestyle should be accustomed to it. All of the other families/charachters seem to be used to the climate and "lifestyle". Why isnt she? I live in texas so alaska is a proverbial foreign land to me but I can tell she is a fraud and wouldnt last a min in any serious survival situation.
