Hillary Clinton elaborated today on why she rebuffed the Obama campaign’s request that she attack Sarah Palin during the 2008 presidential race to blunt Palin’s appeal to women.
Clinton made her comments in an exclusive interview this morning on Good Morning America with ABC’s Robin Roberts after Palin cited Clinton’s new book “Hard Choices” to suggest it was the Democrats “who fired the 1st shot in the real ‘war on women.’”
Clinton admitted she was asked by the Obama campaign to “go out and criticize” Palin when she was selected as John McCain’s running mate during the 2008 campaign, but she said, “‘For what? For being a woman? No let’s wait until we know where she stands. I don’t know anything about her, do you know anything about her?’ And nobody of course did.”
“I think it’s fair to say that I made it clear I’m not going to go attack somebody for being a woman or a man. I’m going to try and look at the issues, where they stand, what their experience is, what they intend to do and then that’s fair game,” Clinton said.
In responding to Palin’s tweet she tried to clarify saying, “That’s not exactly what I said.”
The first thing that should be pointed out is that the idea that Hillary would attack Palin for being a woman seems to have come from Hillary herself, and NOT the Obama campaign who were simply looking for a female face to counteract the buzz that was created by Palin's addition to the GOP ticket.
In fact in the book she explains what motivated the Obama administration to ask her:
The 2008 presidential candidate writes in the book that, 'The Obama campaign suspected that her nomination was a blatant attempt to scuttle their hope of welcoming the women who had vigorously supported me. They immediately issued a dismissive statement and reached out to me in hopes I would follow suit.'
'But I wouldn't. I was not going to attack Palin just for being a woman appealing for support from other women. I didn't think it made political sense, and it didn't feel right. So I said no...''
Second it appears that Hillary was very sensitive about perceived sexism within the 2008 Obama campaign, which I actually don't remember but perhaps I missed some things that Hillary picked up on. (To be fair there were a few racist remarks coming out of Bill Clinton in those days as well.) In fact it appears that she is still very sensitive about what happened in 2008, and despite the fact that they seemed to have buried the hatchet there is clearly some residual animus.
Perhaps that explains to some degree why Hillary is providing Palin with this new ammunition that I can guarantee is being written into some long winded ghostwritten Facebook post as we speak.
Update: A former senior Obama Campaign official has offered some very important context:
A senior Obama campaign official said that the request for Clinton to speak was tailored specifically to Palin’s speech after McCain picked her as his running mate, in which she made a direct pitch for Clinton supporters.
“Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America. But it turns out the women of America aren’t finished yet, and we can shatter that glass ceiling once and for all,” Palin said at the time.
“We wanted Hillary to go out and say the Republican platform is completely inconsistent with the principles on which I ran,” said the official, adding that it was not supposed to be a broad-based knock on Palin.
Now see that makes perfect sense, and it seems much more inline with how I remember that the Obama campaign handled things.
My question is why did Hillary not explain it accurately, and leave it up to others to put things in perspective?
She is smart enough to know better.

In 2008, no one attacked Sarah Palin for being a woman. The minute that she opened her mouth and showed that she was completely unqualified to be Vice President, she was attacked for being stupid. For the record, there are men who are stupid, too. And, there were Republican women who were more qualified than Palin to be nominated for the VP slot, but they were not as pretty. That's the sexist part, but it was the McCain campaign who was sexist for choosing Palin.
EXACTLY. And the very idea that criticizing a female candidate is "the war on women" is ridiculous on it's face. The war on women is about attacking their rights and limiting their freedoms and suggesting their equality is irrelevant or possibly even a bad idea (as we've seen the GOP do as they stumble around trying on rationalizations for why equal pay for women is a bad thing)
DeleteBut of course in Palin's sociopathic worldview, everything is always about HER.
Just like Alex Jones thinks the Las Vegas shootings were a "false flag" operation against HIM, I have no doubt that $arah believes Hillary's presidential run will be just to spite HER.
I know Obamacare covers mental illness, but I guess it's like they say: you can lead a horse to water...
I agree 2:41. I don't have to agree with a candidate on every issue, but I cannot tolerate stupid.
Delete3:12 I have no doubt that $arah believes Hillary's presidential run will be just to spite HER.
Delete----------------------
The pee ponders think the race will be Sarah and Hillary, she is just keeping the $ flowing into her pac. The bigger she makes this, the more $. She won't run, but there are a good 2 years of money flow there. And some camera time............
Personally, I'm tired of Sarah Palin being 'included' in this possible Hillary Clinton run for POTUS. What crap!
DeleteThe only constant focus on Sarah Palin is on a few blogs. She's getting very little national attention that stays up for more than a day or so anymore.
Hopefully, when Hillary's campaign begins (if it does) there will be so much on her plate that the mention of the idiot, white trash from Wasilla, AK will truly be a foot note somewhere!
Alaskans are sick of her as are the majority across the nation. She does NOT represent women as does Hillary Clinton!
If Sarah's planning on running, she'll have to hire her skeleton staff very, very soon. For better or worse, she needs a solid volunteer cadre in every state, and good friends who will boost her chances in various venues. The time to start her engines is now. If she lets herself drift into next year, she'll never have a chance.
DeleteNothing to add, I agree with all of you.
DeleteYep. As a matter of fact Joe Biden had to be very careful not to be seen as attacking her at all, and making her a sympathetic "who little ole me?" victim as she is so good at portraying herself.
DeleteExactly. Other qualified GOP women also didn't have the 'perfect' family including a special needs newborn. Of course , one wonders what the GOP might have done had they known Bristol was pregnant. I suspect they would have passed on pretty vapid Sarah.
ReplyDeleteThey knew she was pregnant. it was part of the big plan.
DeleteAre you sure? I read where the campaign didn't know about Bristol until after Palin was jumping up and down doing cartwheels and counting the cash.
Deletemaybe anon 3:18 is referring to the McCain campaign "knowing" Sarah was pregnant; with her miracle snowflake special needs blessing of a fishpicker. Which I don't believe she actually was.
DeleteHillary has it all over $P because Mrs. C has in spades what La Palin will never, ever have: substance. Hillary is a whole served-on-good-china Thanksgiving dinner set forth on my best Madeira tablecloth, compared with $arah's half-gnawed-carnival-corndog lying in the midway dust.
ReplyDeleteEducation, taste, class, experience, grace under pressure... need I say more?
Mrs Tarquin Biscuitbarrel, thank you for your eloquence and succinctly comparing Hillary and Sarah. Perfect analogy!
DeleteVery succinctly phrased my dear Mrs TBb! Or perhaps Taco Bell takeout with a plastic container of pumpkin pudding for a takeout surprise!
DeleteMrsG
nicely said, Mrs T
DeleteWell, let's wait until Hillary has been the butt of a few of Sarah Palin's nasty internet comments. Then, she might want to say a few things. I don't think the Obama campaign wanted Hillary to "attack" Sarah because she was a woman but because she was/is an incompetent politician and has never had the gravitas needed for being any kind of leader.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
Beaglemom: "... she was/is an incompetent politician"
DeleteI suspect Hillary from here on out (a la Obama) will ignore Palin's Facebook spewage. I will add a bit to your characterization ... Palin was/is an incompetent and VILE person.
Right. Any criticism coming from a male would have been called sexism by the Republicans. Having it come from a female politician would make that charge fairly ludicrous..
DeleteOnce is plenty.
DeleteHillary: Swat-----> Palin: Splat
Nice going, HRC 45.
Sometimes you're the windshield
Deleteand sometimes you're the bug.(again)
Basically, Hillary is saying she isn't wasting her time with Sarah. She definately does not want to be associated with her. Can you imagine what Hillary thinks of her GED children?
ReplyDeleteI doubt Hillary wastes a moment thinking about the Palin spawn. She probably doesn't even know their names.
DeleteTruck, Bustle, Wiley, Pipette, Thong, Hillary knows most of 'em!
DeleteI'll bet the Clinton Team has researched and knows everything there is to know about Sarah and Todd Palin. Would not be one bit surprised. The Clintons have been in the political business for eons and have the contacts throughout the country and world. All they probably have to do is ask and the investigation/research they require is done for them.
DeleteI feel I should explain here that despite a few recent posts, I am still fully in support of Hillary's 2016 run for President.
ReplyDeleteI think she is by far the best candidate, and will support her wholeheartedly and gladly vote for her.
However that does not mean there are not a few things for which she deserves criticism.
And some of her statements in this book certainly qualify.
I am voting for Hill too.I hope she picks Elizabeth Warren for VP. That would be my dream team. Both are well educated serious ladies who bring it all to the table.
DeleteNo politician is ever perfect. There will always be things we disagree with and decisions we feel are wrong.
DeleteAs much as I support and admire President Obama, there are some things he's done that make me twitch. Overall, however, I think he's doing a remarkable job, particularly under the circumstances.
Hillary has even more experience, both foreign and domestic, than Obama did in 2008, as well as the toughness and determination to make a great President.
She's made mistakes, and will no doubt make more in the future. However, unlike the GOP, we Democrats do hold our politicians responsible when they screw up. We expect them to accept responsibility and repair any damage they may have caused or, if the transgression is significant enough, resign from their position.
I wasn't aware that Mrs. Clinton had already announced a 2016 run for President Gryph.
DeleteI'm admittedly not a big Hill fan, but much of what I have read about in her statements both in the book, and in interviews on her book tour are cringe-worthy in the gloss over CYA department.
I wouldn't hold my breath that she is intending, or will eventually decide to run either.
There isn't a Republican alive I would vote for.
DeleteObama's campaign wanted Hillary to attack Palin on her stupidity rather than her vagina! They were smart not to go there. Hillary probably knows she'll be attacked by the idiot if she decides to run. And I don't think Hillary will be quiet this time!
ReplyDeleteHOLD ON! The context here is VERY important. THIS is what happened.
ReplyDeleteGryphen, I would request that you offer this as an update to the post, since Sarah is using this to bash Obama, when in fact, he is NOT the one who asked it, or said it, his campaign manager did and when Obama found out about it, he said it DID NOT reflect his sentiments. That distinction is being lost int he usual media frenzy that happens. And Sarah needs to be smacked down for making this about Obama.
-------------------------
Obama's campaign reacted to the Palin pick in August 2008 with a statement arguing the Alaska governor was too inexperienced to be vice president. "John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," campaign spokesman Bill Burton said in that statement.
Barack Obama quickly distanced himself from the statement, telling reporters later in the day that it was a "hair-trigger" response that did not reflect his sentiments. Obama said he felt Palin was "a compelling person" and her selection was a hit against the glass ceiling that limits women's advancement.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/10/hillary-clinton-sarah-palin_n_5479052.html?utm_hp_ref=politics
Of course this: "John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," turned out to be a very accurate (if actually somewhat limited as to the real extent of her many shortcomings) assessment of her lack of qualifications.
DeleteI think the GOP can use Clinton's finance problems against her in a presidential campaign with something like "she wants to do the budget for the country, but can't handle... yady yady ya."
ReplyDeleteBut the President doesn't control the purse strings, as the GOP is so fond of telling Obama. The GOP will throw everything at Hillary, and just like Obama, nothing will stick. She is smart, savvy, experienced, and knows all the world leaders. She will beat anyone in a debate. Bring it on, Canada Cruz, Aqua Buddha, and Bully Christie. Bring it on.
DeleteThey can try, but the HOUSE is the one that holds those purse strings.
DeleteSue @ 3:53 P.M. - No more Canada Cruz! See story at cbc.ca - "Ted Cruz officially renounces Canadian citizenship" - High fuckin' time this traitorous teabag scumbag fucks off! Darling $arah can now suckhole up to him and his old man!
DeleteHe may have officially renounced but as any Canadian knows it will take a good little while for it to go through the channels and be completed.
DeleteNope, 1:34 AM, his ex-Canadian status has become official now. It did take a few months.
DeleteI wonder when he'll give up his Cuban citizenship.
"In 2008, no one attacked Sarah Palin for being a woman."
ReplyDelete------------------------------------------
You are absolutely correct, but Palin and the McCain campaign immediately screamed "sexism" at the top of their lungs every time anyone pointed out that something Palin had done or said was stupid, or racist, or undignified, or reckless, etc.
And that loud, screaming, repetitive claim of SEXXXXXISM is what the media picked up and ran with.
Reasoned discourse with anything involving Palin was not part of the discussion. Hmm. Why not?
After all, Palin did show show up on talk shows and interviews to refute claims of stupidity, incompetence, inexperience, lunacy, racism and what have you.
Oh, wait. No, she did not. She could not. Because she was (and is) stupid, incompetent, inexperienced, nutty as can be, racist, oh, and ignorant of everything a candidate for Vice-President of the United States should know.
It is critical that Clinton not allow the narrative to become that she believes that Palin was attacked for being a woman, and that Clinton sympathizes with her for that reason (or any other). Her next response should be Obama's, "I don't really think about her."
In fact, I believe that it is critical that Clinton never, ever, discuss Palin again. Palin is a has-been, from the past, eight years ago (in 2016), who walked away from her sworn duties, and has done nothing but cavort around on tacky "reality" shows and yap away on facebook with millions of other teenagers since then.
We have real problems and need real people to address them. Palin is irrelevant to the 2016 race.
Just ask the republicans who would not allow her near the 2012 convention.
The GOP thought that it would be a good idea to have Palin as their VP pick, in hopes of getting the Hillary supporters. The problem is, women aren't as stupid as the GOP had hoped. Palin proved to be an imbecile. Heck, she didn't even know what the role of the VP was. And, when someone in McCain's own camp said that she couldn't even bring herself to vote, you have to know that even she knew that Palin was a mistake. Yes, Sarahskank, you did cost McCain the election.
ReplyDeleteSarahskank can whine all she wants now but, she has to admit that Hillary had a lot of class by not attacking her during the campaign. Oh, wait. Sarahskank wouldn't admit such a thing because she has no class.
DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER

I hate to go off topic on my own post, but Eric Cantor just lost his primary.
ReplyDeleteAnd that my friends is big news.
He lost to a teabagger! There aren't enough baggers left to take over leadership, so I doubt it'll amount to a hill of beans, but it couldn't happen to a nastier POS.
DeleteWoooooooot!
DeleteBWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
DeleteYessssssssssssss,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Actually, there's a lot of baggers out there, Anita, and just enough idiots to vote for them. I remain wary, but glad to see that POS gone.
DeleteTime to him to move to another state, claim residency, and try again. Isn't that standard procedure? :)
Maybe he lost b/c the resident dems thought a "teabagger" would be easier to beat in the election...like AKM & Shannyn told everyone about Palin and Joe miller.
DeleteYa that will work.
hopefully....
Time to start filling out your WINGNUT WELFARE application Mr. Cantor. Now you can be a full time kochsucker.
Delete1.) Hillary mentioned moose-mama to sell books. It worked!
ReplyDelete2.) O/T but GREAT news - Eric Cantor is losing his re-election bid badly - to a teabagger even crazier than he is!
Wow, about Eric Cantor.
ReplyDeleteAbout Hillary, it is curious why she didn't elaborate more on the point. Maybe she was putting out a fleece, to see what the response would be. If Palin is going to be a prickly thorn during a Hillary run, maybe she was testing the waters to see if Palin would bite, and bite she did.
I think she was playing Sarah. And like expected, Sarah takes the bait. Now the Hillary campaign will have a game plan.
No Gryphen, Hillary is smart enough to get this stuff out in the open now, before the rumor starting GOP does. Say just enough to start the discussion, then let them paint themselves into their own corner.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what the campaign meant to do, they could never have hurt women more than Mitt with his binders full of em'.
ReplyDeleteNow brissy has a nasty post about Hillary on her nancy blog. Lol, like we're going to believe 1/2 witted, loose bristol can write more than nasty texts and hatebook comments. Gee, I wonder if Hillary will respond to uneducated mini-me who can't keep her panties up...
ReplyDeleteThe "Sweet Spot" from the Road Scholar's post is this gem:
Delete"Of course, it should’ve been an easy choice not to use this terrible situation to pimp out your latest book."
The Pimp's Princess who's pimped out by the Wife of Pimp, used the word "Pimp" properly. Someone give Brissy a gold star!
Bristol is just doing what she does best, spreading the word. The word is LEGS.
DeleteDon't wreck a good ZZ Top tune for me, 5:06 PM.
DeleteI think I just threw up a LOT in my mouth!
At least no one is turning Tripps...err...turning tricks...
DeleteNow is the ideal time for a Palin/Heath insider, relative or disgruntled hanger-on to come forth and provide the proof about Sarah's pregnancy hoax.
DeleteI am sure higher up Democrats and GOP are well aware of the deceit, but the Repubs will never admit to it (i.e., that they didn't vet Sarah at all) and the Dems shouldn't be the ones to do the unveiling (in order to avoid an immediate backlash from the "mainstream" GOP, who in reality hate Sarah and the Tea Partiers she fancies).
Sarah is a bitter, hateful, racist sociopath---good for nothing but riling up ignorant people like herself. It's all about her and the money she can grift...not about ideology (though ideology is what Palin would have her followers believe she preaches).
It's time to force Sarah and her mini-me Bristol off the stage they cling to. Both are a distraction and a nuisance...contributing nothing to intelligent discourse, only hateful, ignorant behavior that benefits no one.
Once the big pregnancy con is revealed, I believe other family secrets and documentation of illegal behavior will coming spilling out. There are journalism awards, prizes and recognition to be won...I wish someone would show Sarah what real journalism is all about.
Didn't Bristol study at Stanford with Chelsea? Oh, wait, never mind....
Delete;-)
No it was Stan's Ford....
DeleteHa-ha!
DeleteI'm sorry, Gryphen, but this just bugs the HELL out of meQ Hillary DID NOT write a book about Sarah Palin! Your headline needs to be altered to read : "...clarifies statements about Sarah Palin in her book."
ReplyDeleteSorry it's the grammarian in me.
That is great fuckin' news! The smarmy prick.
ReplyDelete@4:59
DeleteHouse Majority Leader Eric Cantor loses primary. Music to our ears.
I had the pleasure of watching the interview, and Robin said "Sarah read your book, and this is what she tweeted..." I'll tell ya, Hillary is one strong woman. She kept a poker face and went on with a smile.
ReplyDeleteThere HAD to have been quite a lot of friction/emotion involved on both Candidate Obama's team AND Hillary Clinton's team. They were both strong candidates, and Hillary got where she was/is with a lot of hard work. I was for her early on, but the more I found out about President Obama, I realized he was the best choice for our country at the time. What spoke volumes to me was Hillary's willingness to work for her former adversary. They put aside their differences and she worked her butt off for the good of the country.
Something I admire in a candidate, Imagine for one second a certain female quitter actually doing the same and putting country first? Hillary for President, Liz Warren for VP would be my dream ticket.
You can be assured that Sarah Palin did NOT read Hillary's book - someone probably read it to her and/or provided her points she might want to address on her Facebook page.
DeleteShe is NO match for Hillary Clinton!
And, Sarah Palin directed to the open door to HELL!
DeleteSomeone scanned it for Sarah and pulled up any references to her. There probably were not many.
DeleteBeaglemom
This shows how smart Barack Obama really is. Why call Sarah Palin an incompetent beauty pageant governor when in just a matter of time Sarah Palin herself will reveal to everyone her lack of experience and education. By selecting Sarah Palin, John McCain is unfit to be the president and that he put the United States of America in danger by picking someone who couldn't be elected dog catcher in the lower 48.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone dispute that Sarah Palin cost John McCain the election?
Nope, for those who know.
DeletePeople ask why Sarah's crazy description of Trig's birth was never made an issue during the 2008 campaign-- or even afterwards, when it would be good business to shut her up. Attacking her version of Trig's arrival would be seen as a personal attack on Palin herself. It would have given her a golden chance to play the victim (the way that she is doing over the Hillary book). By letting Palin say stupid things, she makes herself irrelevant and a joke, and no one has to attack her. Palin is her own worse enemy. Examples of Palin's stupidity? They would fill a page:
Delete1. The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere
2. The Statute of Liberty (a warning not to go making the same mistakes that Europe made)
3. Can't remember a book, magazine or paper that she ever read
4. Couldn't remember a Supreme Court case with which she didn't agree (Exxon-Valdez)
5. Foreign policy (Alaska is this close to Russia)
6. Remind me again, which one is our friend, North or South Korea?
7. Phone call from Sarkosy
8. Remind me again, is Africa a country or what?
9. Blood Libel (they were surveyors marks, not target marks)
10. Yes, Sarah, we believe that you were in labor and leaking amniotic fluid and chose to fly for 12 hours, passing up a fully equipped hospital in Anchorage to drive an extra mile to deliver a special needs, premature baby at a hospital which cannot handle that kind of delivery. Yeah, I believe that and the story about the Bridge, too, also.
I can't find any information that King Maker Sarah Palin endorsed David Brat. That could be why he won against Cantor.
ReplyDeleteDavid Brat was not cloaked with the Sarah Palin Curse!
Sarah would never endorse a university professor! Too much intelligence for her! (Not that Brat is intelligent, after all he is Teaparty. Teaparty and intelligence makes an oxymoron.

Also doesn't know what a failed VP candidate is supposed to do either. Well those with any sense of dignity anyway.

DeleteSnort. And that dullard never will know "what it is that the VP does every day."
DeleteThank goodness.
Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, “What does the Vice President do?”
ReplyDeletePALIN: That’s something that Piper would ask me! … [T]hey’re in charge of the U.S. Senate so if they want to they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom.
Ummm Sarah, the U.S. Senate website explains that the modern role of Vice Presidents has been to preside over the Senate “only on ceremonial occasions.”
The Vice President cast the tie breaking vote in the Senate in the event of a tie. John Adams was the first VP and the senate told him he was to sit quietly and not bother them unless there was a tie vote. Silly Sarah.
DeleteWow, I know something about being a VP. Hillary should choose me as her VP. (jk).

ReplyDeleteHilary didn't need to tell women what to do... We're smart enough to have figured it out for ourselves.
ReplyDeleteSo finally, you are discovering that Hillary isn't the savior of the world & like most politicians she stretches the truth.
ReplyDeleteHillary is interested in Hillary and white house glamor - I've not heard any policies - I've heard what she disagrees with, what she does not do - but how about what she does do.
President Obama won because he had/has very positive policies. That the GOP does ANYTHING to stop those policies does not detract from who he is and what he does.
STFU would you? Hillary is running like Sarah Fucking Palin is running. NOT AT ALL.
DeleteWhy should Hillary Clinton Private Citizen be talking about her policies instead of her book?
If Hillary declares THEN you can whine about policies.
Sad that political discourse has to get abusive - Hillary has plenty to say about policies she disagrees with - but like those who oppose the President - she doesn't seem to have anything positive to say.
DeleteLike I said before, Hillary should have been smart enough not to have any mention of Stupid Sarah in her book at all.
ReplyDeleteAgreed - like when the President was asked what he thought of Palin & he said no thoughts of her ever entered his mind.
DeleteHillary is prone to gross exaggeration. In her primary campaign, she described a plane landing into Bosnia in which they were being fracked by anti-aircraft guns or something like that. Provably false. She and Bill were "dead broke." Cash strapped maybe. Low on cash flow, sure. Broke. Hardly. He had a lifetime pension. She had an $8 million book advance. This need to gild the lily at the expense of fact infuriates me. It hurts her credibility overall. It makes her look small. She did so much to win our respect as Secretary of State. Now it's her race to lose. And she will.
ReplyDeleteAnon 5:15 I totally agree,
Delete
