"People ask me what I'm proudest of and what are my biggest frustrations as president," Obama said. "My biggest frustration is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage. We're the only developed country where this happens. And it happens now once a week. And it's a one day story. There's no place else like this. Our levels of gun violence are off the charts. There's no advanced developed country on earth that would put up with this."
"Now we have a different tradition, we have a 2nd Amendment. We have historically respected gun rights. I respect gun rights. But the idea for example that we could not even get a background check bill in, to make sure that if you're going to buy a weapon you have to actually go through a fairly rigorous process so that we know who you are, so you can't just walk up to a store and buy a semi-automatic weapon, makes no sense."
Hey guess what?
President Obama's biggest frustration is also MY biggest frustration.
And do you know what?
It should be ALL of our biggest frustration.
I felt every word he spoke here, because I have said them over and over myself.
On the face of it we should have no problem protecting the rights of law abiding Americans to own firearms, while also keeping them out of the hands of those who might use them to do harm to others.
I know it can be done, and the fact that so many on the Right simply refuse to even engage in a conversation as to how is something that I find completely unacceptable.
And obviously so does the President.
(H/T to Mediaite.)
OT Gryphen.....MSN is reporting that Eric Cantor lost his primary election to a Tea Bagger challenger!
ReplyDeleteThe Republican Party is imploding right before our eyes!!!
I'm going to miss the photos where little Eric stands behind Boehner with stars in his eyes, imagining the size gavel HE was going to have someday.
DeleteBWAHAHAHAHAHA!
It was an Open Primary, and it's still early, but it sounds like the Dems crossed party lines and helped vote Cantor out! The Dems in Virginia were organized and urged their members to vote for the Tea Bagger and get rid of Cantor!!! And it also sounds like the Dems DID in fact field a candidate last week, but it is a very red district so there is lots of work to do.
DeleteSo, they got rid of Cantor and may be replacing him with someone ever worse. Hmmm. At least the new guy, if he wins (God forbid), will have no seniority.
DeleteBeaglemom
OT CNN projecting that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost the primary.
ReplyDeleteRemember "going postal" was the phrase used when the US Postal Service was having seemingly endless violent outbreaks in the workplace.
ReplyDeleteWhat ever they did to clean up the problem in the US Postal Service might work well in our schools. Starting with consistent mental health screening of staff and students.
That would mean money for schools. Can't have that. We can't even afford more than one counselor for 500 kids. And we can't pass any laws against home owned bazookas. More people will die.
DeleteMental health screenings? Maybe you need a mental health screening for even suggesting such an outright violation of privacy, freedom, and general decency. Why don't you just go ahead and shove your very stupid communist ideas straight up your dumb ass.
Delete@7:09 PM Do you have something to hide? I would want to know if I am working with a nutcase. You are the Paranoid Dumb Ass.
DeleteAnd there you have it, IMers!
DeleteMay I present 7:09 PM.
7:09 PM, I fall in awed worship at your thoughtfully expressed words of wisdom.
DeleteEric Cantor out.......omg, now we need ole turtle face Mitch gone,oh I can dream. This is so friggin awesome.
ReplyDeleteyeah....another school shooting, lets vote them all out!!!!
I'm not surprised it's his biggest frustration. Imagine having to travel around the world where people are sane, knowing that everyone thinks you're a freak from the land of freaks. Because you are.
ReplyDeleteO/T but a little perspective on how they are behaving. It's ok when a white republican does it...
ReplyDeleteThe Right Didn’t Mind When Bush Paid a Ransom to Terrorists
Republicans are howling (with no proof) that Obama paid a ransom for Bowe Bergdahl’s freedom. Funny. They weren’t howling when Bush actually did it.

Virginia Primary Results: Eric Cantor Stunned By Tea Party Challenger Dave Brat In Massive Upset
ReplyDeleteHouse Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) lost his seat in Congress Tuesday in a shocking upset to a college professor backed by the tea party.
Cantor had been expected to easily win reelection to an eighth term in Virginia's 7th Congressional District over his competitor, Dave Brat. Cantor raised about $5.4 million, compared with Brat's $200,000. And as the second-most powerful Republican in the House, Cantor's victory seemed secure. The main question seemed to be how big his margin would be over Brat. No sitting House majority leader has lost since 1899.
Last week, a poll commissioned by The Daily Caller had Cantor's lead slipping, but he was still beating Brat by 13 points.
Cantor's campaign dismissed that poll's lead as ridiculously low, saying the congressman would "win by a much stronger margin." Internal polling showed Cantor up 34 points.
The news hit Republicans in Washington hard Tuesday evening when word spread that Cantor had lost.
"I have to say I don't know of anyone who expected this," said a plugged-in conservative insider who requested anonymity to speak openly. "The shock among people who are supposed to know that world is like nothing I've seen."

Yeah, but THIS is the guy that beat him and he is a real piece of work:

‘The NRA Has Created A Monster’
ReplyDeleteFrom Las Vegas to Georgia, the NRA Has Created a Monster
The past month’s mass-shooting death toll is the logical conclusion of the gun group’s leaders’ deluded approach to our safety.
It’s been quite a month for the National Rifle Association: Massacres at universities, in restaurants, and at retail stores from South Carolina to Las Vegas. Gun nuts porting assault weapons to dinner from Chili’s to Chipotle. The leaders of the take-no-prisoners gun-rights organization have been witness to the logical outgrowth of its policies and rhetoric. Much as the GOP helped create the lunatic-fringe Tea Party within its midst, the NRA chieftains have helped birth a beast whose black heart now beats strongly among its most radical adherents.
The NRA’s officials purposefully pipeline propaganda to the most loony-tunes among us. They’ve told these gun cultists that they had best arm themselves with as many weapons and as lethal weaponry as they can get their hands on, because either a black president or a black helicopter will be hunting them down shortly. Simultaneously, they’ve used every electoral and lobbying tactic to best enable these unstable individuals to have access to the weaponry of war from which they and their arms-dealer cronies so handsomely profit.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/06/09/from-las-vegas-to-georgia-the-nra-has-created-a-monster.html
No. SHIT. And it started with Dubya lifting the ban.
DeleteConcealed Carry Laws Don't Decrease Gun Violence -- But the NRA Continues to Say the Opposite
ReplyDeletehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-weisser/concealed-carry-laws_b_5479055.html
Add me in with the frustration. Something's gotta be done, there's been over 70 mass shootings since Conneticuit, and we couldn't even get stronger registration, waiting times, etc. The least we could ask for. How much does a trigger lock cost in comparison to a gun? That, alone, may stop these "accidents" and "game failures" that kill innocent kids. Can we take up a collection and supply one with every license for a gun? Any owner who has a gun and feels it's a good idea? I'm sure the gun lovers love their kids just as much as non gun lovers, can we at least agree to trigger locks?
ReplyDeleteThey're too stupid to lock it.
DeleteHence the three-year-old Gryph posted about earlier.
If you think anything is going to change, no matter what President Obama says. you're mistaken. The Reynolds High today happened in my backyard. If you could see the faces of the parents waiting to hug their kids, this shit would stop NOW. But NO. Seriously, fuck Congress and fuck Dubya for lifting the ban on assault weapons and now he paints. Fuck him! $arah Palin that licks your lips every damn time this happens? Fuck YOU especially, and your damn "saint" Reagan that stripped mental health. Gabby Giffords, bitch, you are the poster child for how wrong that was while you sit on your self-made throne. YOU are the TRUE definition of cunt.
ReplyDeleteTodd Palin must have a shitload of new guns Sarah boat to rejoice mass shootings are possible.
DeleteFrustrating, indeed! The inability to pass common sense gun control legislation when the majority of voters favor it is nuts.
ReplyDeleteSo what is Mrs Clinton's plan on guns - appease the NRA? - appease the tea party? Does she have a policy? She should be out there campaigning for 2014 - not running around in a book tour bus - now who does that remind me of?
ReplyDeleteNo one will do a damn thing.
DeleteIt's not their kid.
Snort at the bus tour...
Hillary 2016!
If those GOPers are so pro-life, then then should be pro-life for all of us after we are born.
ReplyDeleteThe acceleration of gun proliferation is staggering. I think they should forget about the guns, the genie is well out of the bottle, but go after the ammunition. Guns can't kill with out bullets, and I never hear anyone talk about that. Let them 'bear arms' all they want. Just ration the bullets.
ReplyDeleteIt's strange to think back to a time when just having a "toy" gun that looked too much like an assault rifle could get a kid killed by a police officer. Now there are idiots walking around like they're on the streets of Beirut.
ReplyDeleteIn the past two months in the suburbs around Rochester, NY, we have had 12 cases of car windows being shot while the occupants were driving on the highways. There are an additional 4 cases of window damage that the police have not yet determined to be part of this rash of shootings but are investigating. So far, any of the evidence they've been able to collect points to a BB gun being used. And, so far, there have been no deaths or injuries.
ReplyDeleteHowever, today the window of a school bus carrying special needs kids on a field trip was shot. A FREAKING SCHOOL BUS!!!
The section of highway that has seen the most incidents is the same section of road I travel every day to and from work. I find myself looking carefully at the vehicles around me, watching for open windows, and checking out overpasses as I drive underneath.
I hate that I find myself doing this. We have GOT to put a stop to this proliferation of guns in our country or we will turn into the next Syria.
