Katherine Lynn Bryan grew up in New Port Richey, the youngest in a tight-knit group of four siblings. She recently got married and became Katherine Hoover. At the age of 25, she was five months pregnant. The new baby was going to be her second son.
Instead, a tragic gun accident at a friend's house left the young mother and her unborn child dead Sunday.
A stay-at-home mother who had recently moved from New Port Richey to Inverness, Katherine Hoover died in a hospital emergency room early Sunday.
She was shot in the head Saturday evening while being shown a gun at a friend's house in Brooksville, authorities said.
She and her husband, Carson Hoover, had gone to visit friends at 20079 Suncrest Drive in northwest Brooksville, just outside the city limits.
Sometime around 6:45 p.m. inside the house, William DeHayes was showing the Hoovers some of his guns, including a .22-caliber revolver. The gun accidentally fired and shot Katherine Hoover in the head, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.
Hoover was rushed to Bayfront Health Brooksville and then airlifted to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.
Her unborn child could not be saved. Shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, physicians removed the 5-month-old fetus from his dying mother in a last-ditch attempt to save him. But he was pronounced dead just after 8:30 p.m.
Something that has always confused me is the idea that the rabid Right to Life movement, is invariably made up of the same people who also support the death penalty and the 2nd Amendment.
One would think that if you were so focused on every fetus's right to be born, you would also be against having a lot of guns around which might take their life as a child or as an adult. Or does "pro-life" concerns end once the child successfully navigates the birth canal?
Guns do NOT protect life, guns take life.
And in this case they took two innocent lives.
Does that make anybody feel safer?
Guns do not accidentally fire.
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather had all kinds of guns and not once did
he call me up and say--"Its the damnedest thing, but one of my guns in the gun safe just went off all by itself."
And this is not another "accident." This is just like someone
driving recklessly and killing people on the sidewalk. Reckless endangerment is not an accident and it should stop being treated as such.
How many dead from "accidents" this week?
Gryphen, I think you mean "invariably," not "invaluably.'
ReplyDeleteWhat a horrible tragedy. Another "responsible" gun owner who doesn't keep his guns unloaded, and doesn't know enough to not point them at ANYBODY unless he is intending to kill them.
You're right, thanks.
Delete"Your fetus does not trump my 2nd amendment rights."
ReplyDeleteWe need someone to finance a nation-wide billboard blitz using the slogan, "Guns stop a beating heart".
ReplyDeleteIrresponsible gun owners who inflict harm or take life should be treated just like reckless drivers who do the same. If there's alcohol involved, treat them like drunk drivers. And, if their firearm causes harm they lose the right to own firearms.
ReplyDeleteAmmosexuals cannot have it both ways. If they're going to argue that guns are no different than autos then the legal consequences should be the same.
This happened in my neighborhood.... sheesh
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should keep a new list of statistics comparing all the tragic loss of lives compared to when an ammosexual with a gun ever saved anyone.
ReplyDeleteAn idiot with a gun kills someone, it's not an accident, it is murder. Seriously. With a half hour at a certified range, even most of these morons could learn the irrefutable basic of always expecting a gun to be loaded, never aim it at anyone (unless intending to kill them,) and properly carry/secure and know where your gun is at all times.
Tragic accidents? No. This is gross stupidity and it's time gun manufacturers and the NRA owned it.
The 'pro-life' label is Orwellian. The movement is solely interested in being 'anti-abortion' and protecting potential life from interference by its mother and incubator. Conception and fetal development are sacred and should be left 'in God's hands...and that bullet was an instrument of God.
ReplyDeleteTo anonymous 2:58. Fuck you AND your 2nd Amendment rights
ReplyDeleteIt was in quotes....full snark. Get a clue.
DeleteImagine mine was in quotes, and we're square.
DeleteThe sentiment stands to the quote.
Are they sure this was an accidental shooting? Sorry, but more women are murdered when they announce a pregnancy or are pregnant than at any other time of their lives.
ReplyDeleteGood point. Too many 'accidental shootings'...pregnant women, kids. The perfect crime.
Deletethis will only stop when people start suing the NRA and gun owners just like they sued cigarette manufacturers
ReplyDeleteWell, another quote accident end quote. When are they going to face the facts? You have a gun in your home, it needs to be unloaded and locked up. Wanna show it off to your friends? Keep a trigger lock on it and whip it out all you want. A woman who wanted a child and the potential child are dead.
ReplyDeleteGuess the crazies can soothe their consciences by putting a stuffed teddy bear or candle on the steps and saying "well, at least there was one less abortion". Pathetic ammosexuals wouldn't know an "accident" if they saw one.
Is the NRA now going to push gun rights for fetuses?
ReplyDelete"If only the fetus had a gun....."
Did the gun owner proffer an oops afterward.......?
ReplyDeleteJail time for anyone showing off their guns and this happens
ReplyDeleteAlso jail time for guns not locked up where persons can
get their hands on them (example, children) , also jail time!
My heart breaks for the lovely, young mother and her unborn
baby!
