This is the one day that I always envy people living in the lower forty eight.
Because of our almost 24 hours of light in the summer the fireworks usually don't start until a little after 11:00 P.M. and they are somewhat hard to see.
The ones celebrating the Fur Rendezvous are are easier to see, but then you have to put up with temperatures that are typically below zero.
Typically the crowd sounds are along the lines of "Ooh, ahh, oh God I can't feel my fingers anymore!"
Anyhow I hope you all had great 4th of July. I know I did.
By the way this might be good place for an open thread if anybody has anything interesting to share.
Gryphen, and all my fellow IM posters...May you enjoy the beauty that is this day, whether it's raining where you are or hotter than Hades, or you have a hurricane bearing down on you...(be safe, hide!) we are all travelers on an incredible space ship called Earth..
ReplyDeleteTime throws you off a roof the second you're born..the fall to the pavement is called a life. Make the most of it.
Very nice post....thank you.
DeleteIf you all will just indulge me just a minute. My dad's birthday was July 4...1918. He's been gone 23 years...This song by Chet Atkins reminds me of him..maybe it will remind some of you of your dad..
ReplyDelete"You know, every time I look in the mirror I see my Dad
I think that's why this song means so much to me"
When I was young
My dad would say
"C'mon son, let's go out and play"
Sometimes it seems like yesterday
And I'd climb up the closet shelf
When I was all by myself
Grab his hat and fix the brim
Pretending I was him
No matter, how hard I try
No matter, how many tears I cry
No matter, how many years go by
I still can't say goodbye
He always took care
Of Mom and me
We all cut down a Christmas tree
He always had some time for me
Wind blows through the trees
Street lights, they still shine bright
Most things are the same
But I miss my dad tonight
I walked by a Salvation Army store
Saw a hat like my daddy wore
Tried it on when I walked in
Still trying to be like him
No matter, how hard I try
No matter, how many years go by
No matter, how many tears I cry
I still can't say goodbye
Thanks Gryphen, for all you do...for all you post and keeping all your posters in line!
We (me) appreciate it very much. Have a great weekend..
What wonderful lyrics. I am fortunate to still have a living father but lost my mother recently. Thank you for sharing.
DeleteMy grandfather would have been 105 today.
ReplyDeleteBless you, Gryph.
Falg scarf? Is she pregnant? Cross bracelet, check. Cowgirl hat? Check. http://t.co/Chkn3wTciy
ReplyDeleteAkkkkkk! Someone's at a family reunion and is proud that she showed up????
DeleteSucker!!!!!
Yeah, looks kind of "Gusty" to me, but the factory closed years ago.
She looks like a man. Or a tranny.
DeleteAnonymous7:42 PM
DeleteHow bout a Tranny Man? LOL!! Anywho...check out this even worse looking pic of the old bald fella...
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BruQ59uCIAAlZ6U.jpg
Check out the TWO phones clutched in her talons! WhoTF does she think is going to call her dumbass?
Bitch ain't even trying anymore...even she knows her time is OVAH! Notice that NO ONE is even looking in her direction...except that poor kid talking to her and Baldy is completely ignoring the little girl! Stupid bitch! LOL!!
Whatever Baldy...and as to the rest of the IM'rs...
Happy 4th of July EVERYBODY!!
She looks drunk!! Her hat is crooked on her head, and the way she is standing looks like she'll fall over in a second.
DeleteNo different than a drunk in the bar who has their friend propping them up. At least she remembered one of her sets of Belmonts; not the Dolly Parton size, but the next size down.
R in NC
Interesting picture, GinaM. It looks as though the girl might be talking past Palin to someone else. She might be ignoring Palin (as is everyone else). Also, everyone else is wearing comfortable summer clothing; light colors, shorts, etc. But Palin is wearing black long sleeves and black pants or skirt, totally unsuited to the event or the weather. I wonder why? And that godawful flag scarf is just tacky beyond belief.
DeleteAnd why does she always clutch her phones in her hand? Everyone I know has a pocket or purse to keep IT (not them!) in.
We had a great 4th. Been adjusting to the empty nest thing, and I got to spend a few hours with all my kids and their friends. Wicked Storm knocked out power last night, awoke at six a.m. to the sounds of chain saws and chippers. Grrrrrr....
ReplyDeleteHope everyone had a safe, happy Independence Day!
From my front lawn I got to see some local people shooting off fireworks around my neighborhood. They were nice but what really excited me was the sight of several fireflies flitting around the yard. I haven't seen fireflies in YEARS and I thought they were pretty much gone from this part of the state.
ReplyDeleteHappy Fourth everyone!
Let's watch the Grizzly Bear celebrate Willow's birthday tomorrow when it is actually July 7th.
ReplyDeleteUh oh, Mrs. Palin is wearing giant scarf, you know what that means, someone is "pregnant" again...wonder which daughter she's faking for this time.
ReplyDeleteA timely and upbeat 4th of July report likely to piss off "patriots" like Palin -- it provides conclusive proof that bumper stickers and photo ops are NOT the only two ways to "Support Our Troops"! (Who knew?)
ReplyDeleteTESLA MOTORS ON A MISSION TO HIRE AMERICAN VETERANS
"We want to be known throughout the veteran community as a great place to work," Arnnon Geshuri, Tesla's vice president of human resources, said in an interview. ...
Tesla's workforce is exploding ... The company now has more than 6,000 employees, and of those, 300 -- or roughly 5 percent -- are veterans, including its logistics director, former Navy officer Adam Plumpton. An additional 600 veteran candidates are in the hiring pipeline ...
"Tesla has risen to the top" among companies known for creating veteran-friendly workplaces, said Ted Daywalt, president and CEO of VetJobs, the nation's leading military job board. "They have a good reputation. They hire veterans who can talk to other veterans. There is a language in the military, and having someone who can speak the lingo is important."
Veterans are a good fit for Tesla because many gained advanced technical, electrical and mechanical skills while serving in the military -- skills applicable to making electric cars. They are also accustomed to working as part of tightly-knit groups.
Greg Reichow, Tesla's vice president of production, says the company is eager to hire veterans because they've found them to be excellent employees who share the company's sense of mission ... "They also know how to lead teams, focus teams and function on teams, and they have incredible integrity and discipline."
Tesla's efforts are twofold. It is aggressively recruiting veterans while trying to create a culture where veterans feel supported and appreciated once they are onboard.

Well done, Tesla!
I wanted to buy Tesla stock way back in 2008 and was talked out of it.
DeleteIt was $220 a share on Friday.
I wanted to buy Apple in the 80s too.
I really need to start standing up to "advice" and go with my own decisions.
She has Cankels!
ReplyDeleteFlag boobs. How patriotic.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the fashionable dude in the Reagan t-shirt.
Also, too -- why is Tripp out of state again?
Some years ago, I decided I did not like fireworks, I consider them a form of the glorification of war and explosives that is destroying mankind. I realize I might be a minority of one, but that is how I feel. (In addition, the materials used in making fireworks have been known to contaminate water supplies and wells and cause serious health problems.)
ReplyDeleteI view it as taking something destructive (gunpowder) and turning it into something beautiful. This year there were plenty of blue fireworks. Blue is a very difficult color to produce. I admire the craft and dedication of the families that produce fireworks as part of their heritage. They strive to produce a fleeting beautiful art for all of us to experience if only for a moment.
DeleteThe history of fireworks is of peace. China developed gunpowder and even guns and bombs. But instead of using them to escalate war, they decided against it and used the technology for fireworks instead.
I wish I lived up there, can't stand fireworks. Beside you have better natural ones than any mankind could possibly make.
ReplyDeleteAs for grandfathers and dad's birthdays, my Czech immigrant grandfather would have been 118 on the 4th, my dad 83 on the 3rd. I was born on the 2nd. Neither one would be proud of what this country is rapidly becoming and I dare say I am not either.
My parents have a Japanese medical student staying with them for three weeks (my Mom volunteers at the hospital) and so I took him and my Dad downtown for the fireworks. It was really great. My Dad and I haven't gone to see live fireworks since I was a child. We usually watch them on TV. This year we did both.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see the Aurora Borealis some day, but probably never will.
I hope you made some new, great memories. Sounds like a great day!
