The Rise of Women's Gun Culture.

Courtesy Rolling Stone:

Over the last decade, the percentage of armed women in America has risen quietly: according to Gallup, the numbers went from 13% in 2005 to 23% in 2011. By last year, that rise wasn't so quiet anymore. Women's interest sites declared "The Rise Of The Female Gun Nut." A Girl and a Gun-type shooting clubs, like Babes with Bullets and The Well Armed Woman, bloomed. And a staunchly, proudly masculine industry at least attempted to keep pace. Walk around a gun show these days, and you're more likely than not to find at least one table piled wide with .223-caliber AR-15 assault rifles rendered in hot pink.

The movement, as of now, is very much fledgling. AG&AG, its de facto hub, nearly tripled attendance since last year's inaugural event, with local chapters from Marietta to Lehigh Valley to Cheyenne represented; still, that means just under 300 people, attendees and instructors all told. But one thing is for sure: here, across the basement-level conference rooms of the serene, sleepy Waco convention center, with these gun-happy ladies, the spirit is strong.

You know I feel somewhat ambivalent about this.

On the one hand I have nothing against a woman wanting to protect herself against the possibility of attack.

On the other hand this "gun culture" talk really bothers me. Just like it does when it pertains to males.

It is one thing if you view owning a gun as a necessary part of keeping safe, and quite another if you view as some crazy version of female empowerment, or a method of self expression.

Years ago I decided to teach women's self defense because I believed that women were more likely to become victims of domestic abuse or crime and I thought self confidence and a self defense skill set could help to keep them safe.

I also believed that women were less likely to use what I taught them to hurt others unnecessarily or to dominate them through threat of injury. Which was one of the reasons that I refused to teach men.

And for the most part that turned out to be correct.

For the most part.

But as I learned to my great frustration SOME women can be just as big of assholes as men.

Women are not all dainty, feminine, non-violent nurturers. Some of them have short tempers, violent tendencies, and a desire to dominate those that are weaker than they are.

Just like men.

So as much as I don't have anything against women, who are more often victimized than men, finding a way to protect themselves, I really think this kind of thing might attract the kind of woman who ABSOLUTELY should not walk around armed.

Just my point of view.

Open-Carry Freaks Find Token Black Guy to Join Armed March through Black Neighborhood

Last night on Facebook, Open Carry Texas announced their plans to move forward with an August 15 march through Houston’s 5th ward. The 5th Ward, a predominately African-American community, is one that’s stricken with gun violence. C.J. Grisham, the group leader for Open Carry, is urging the locals to take up arms and join his group.

Grisham had originally planned for the march to take place on Juneteenth, but ended up giving a speech at a John Birch Society meeting, instead.

They’ll have a special guest, too: Tennessee resident Maurice Muhammad, and self-proclaimed disciple of Louis Farrakhan who promotes cop-killing. As you can imagine, a match hasn’t been this fitting since someone invented two-ply toilet paper (the video referred to in this tweet takes a few seconds to load):

She doesn't profess to be an expert. Notice all that's in YOUR head.

But it's very true she's hunted since a child as most outdoorsy people do and has brought home critters to eat.

Bullshit. She does claim to be an expert. And if she's hunted since she was a child she would know damn well how to handle her own damn gun and whether or not it kicks.

      She doesn't because she's a liar and a poser and a fake.

You thinking she is anything but a lying jackass is all in YOUR head. We know better.

Sarah DOES profess to be an expert shooter who can shoot, kill and then field dress a moose. She's a 50 year old woman who is the daughter of a lifelong hunter, has spent 20+ years as the wife of a big game hunter and is the mother of a "hard bodied" warrior. But she still didn't know if a deer rifle will kick! Ha! Nearly every speech I've ever heard her stumble through, she has reference after reference to guns or ammo or 2nd Amendment rights. We've seen photos of her holding a dead moose by the antlers, blood everywhere and brags about "blood under her fingernails". How much more "expert" and experienced can one person profess to be? She has gone to great length to profess her expertise. But you are right about one thing - Sarah is no gun expert.

If they've been institutionalized for any reason, they can't get a gun. That leaves out Sarah and Willow...not sure about Bree.

This country has a mental health problem disguised as a gun problem, a tyranny problem disguised as a security problem, and a debt problem disguised as a drug problem.

Shouldn't she have her finger on the trigger at this point in the home invasion?

I noticed the trigger finger as well. But it looks like an office/public situation, not a home.

I was pleased to see the finger off the trigger. It gave me the impression a situation was developing, but she has the common sense to hold off on firing until she needs to.

Of course, I could be projecting.

I long ago decided not to own a gun as I didn't want to live with having killed someone. Even in self defense.

I hear you. There are a number of times that I am glad I didn't have a gun and I don't mean this tongue-in-cheek. The trigger is too easy to pull and any women's defense org that hasn't spent some time with the gals at 3am should shut their mouths. More guns is the last thing anybody needs.

The thing is, unless you train rigorously and regularly, guns are a terrible form of self protection. The illusion of safety just encourages women to forget about smart behaviors to decrease the likelihood of needing to protect herself. Worse they only work under very limited circumstances if you have the gun right there, clear shot, enough warning. If a women is truly worried about her physical safety, she'd be far better off learning self defense. Fists and knees are always available, as us the Nike defense (run!). I'm much more confident of my ability to land a groin kick than my ability to fish my gun from my purse, keep the bad guy from grabbing it, and getting a shot off. My right cross isn't bad either.

Guns are an illusion of safety. Silly girls.

When I was in my 20's I worked in downtown Atlanta and did a lot of car trips by myself. I worked next door to Game & Fish LE. I had an officer teach me how to shoot defensively before I got my concealed carry license. I had to pull my gun twice in 20 years. 1 time, all I had to do was pull back my coat and show the drunk guys at the gas station at 3 a.m. in butt-fuck Ga I was carrying and they left. 2nd time I was driving on the highway and a guy in another car was jacking off to a porn mag and showing single woman on the highway what he was doing. (Heard about it from the truckers on the CB as he was coming up the HWY). When he got to me, I calmly rolled down the window and showed him my .38. He got the heck away from me really fast! LOL!

But in reality, I hardly carry now. Usually have one in the car if traveling alone, for bears when in the bushes.

Most (urban living) women (or men for that matter) I know have no business carrying a weapon, they wouldn't be able to use it effectively and would have it taken from them and used against them.

PROOF! New Study Shows Gun Deaths Outnumber Car Deaths in 14 States

One of the most popular pro-gun arguments from the gun fetishists is that cars kill more people than guns, and then want to know if we should outlaw cars.

Obviously this is an illogical comparison as we regulate cars heavily and do everything we can to keep everyone as safe as possible. Unlike many states where gun regulations make it far too easy to access a gun.

However, this whole argument is now being turned on its head because 14 states are now reporting more gun related deaths than car related deaths.
