Alabama news station asks for opinions from viewers about a woman who is promoting the idea of a privately funded atheist display. Oh, this won't go well.

Courtesy of Raw Story:

Responding to a question posed on a Facebook page — maintained by Alabama television station WKRG — asking for opinions on a recent proposal for a privately-funded atheist display, self-identified Christians filled the comment section with vitriol and hatred for a woman speaking for a Mobile atheist group.

According to the Friendly Atheist, WKRG focused the question, not on the display itself, but on Amanda Scott who represented the Mobile Atheist Community.

“FACEBOOK QUESTION: What are your thoughts on a local woman who wants to see an Athiest motto placed next to the words “In God We Trust” at Government Plaza?,” WKRG posted.

What followed were several thousand comments — many deleted now– attacking Scott, wishing for her death, telling her to leave the country, and criticizing her appearance.

Here are just a few of those responses as captured by the Friendly Atheist:

You know if Jesus really were to come back and meet some of the people who claim to be followers of the religion inspired by him, he would waste no time in staging a self crucifixion before one of these terrible people could ask him to pose for a selfie with them.

What is it that Gandhi said again?

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

Amen to that.

The comments sound rather theocratic pseudo-christiany dominionist; of course even with that, only the right kind of 'Christians' matter. *sigh*

Do any of the people who are so proud of their arrogant ignorance even read the red words of Christ in the New Testament?

'Love one another' by treating others the way you want to be treated. It seems that far too many of us who claim Christ are just (and sadly so) CINOs?

For you know they are Christians by their love, by their love, yes you'll know they are Christians by their love...

NEAT! Please let her know that there are way more people who support her than not, and that she should not be discouraged by the hate messages - and even simply avoid that FB site!

  5. What I appreciated most about this story was the visual of a sign, correctly spelled with proper use of an apostrophe. Amazing.

There are good, loving Christians and then there are the hate-filled, ignorant, disgusting "christians" who blather on with their stupidity and have no idea what being a Christian encompasses.

That's the kind of crap I was faced with when one of those shit heads found out I was an atheist. (And no, I was NOT hiding it.)

(For those of you who missed my description of that, look at Gryph's posting called "History of Hell". I think it was this past Saturday.)

Have become a nation of Christian Taliban...

Ever since we did a major remodel of our house with a contractor who (after starting the job) claimed to have partaken in the 'million man march' on DC in the mid1990s, and who scammed us out of our hard earned money by not getting the necessary permits even though he claimed he had them, and giving us super-shoddy work, which we had to pay a fortune to remedy (ever seen the movie 'Money Pit'?!), I have been like a burned child. If anyone claims he/she is a 'Christian', it is a HUGE red flag for me, and I avoid that person as much as I can!

Back in 1993, the security systems company I was working for was sold. I knew the day he came for his introduction meeting that I should quit and look for another job, but I didn't.

He came in wearing an expensive three piece suit and bragging about being a born again christian. Both were red flags I ignored.

After about three months, I had enough garbage and decided to give my notice, letting him know I expected to have all my back wages and commissions paid at the time I left. Since I had a feel for him by that time, I also stated that if he DIDN'T pay me what was owed, I would attempt to take customers as payment. His comment was, "that's okay, there's always some who are dissatisfied. I won't mind."

What he didn't know was that almost every one of his purchased customers liked the service I did.

I sent them a letter on my new company letterhead and merely stated that I was no longer affiliated with the old company.

Within ten days, I had letters from 98% of them (about 150 customers) requesting I do their work for them. In other words, they didn't want the new owner.

He tried to sue, but I had written a letter stating what he had agreed to and he made the stupid mistake of responding in writing. PLUS, I had the letters from the customers requesting my services. Since none of them had a contract with HIM, he lost.

Born again christian? RUN LIKE HELL! Especially if they brag about it.

What a lovely bunch of people supposedly made in God's image. I'd really like to get to know them better, NOT.

That's one of my favorite Ghandi quotes. As time goes on, it's truth remains relevant as the day he said it.

Loving Christians? There's an oxymoron right there.
