In 2012 409 people were killed by police officers in America in what were determined to be justifiable shootings. In Britain the police fired off a single shot. Nobody was killed.

Courtesy of PRI:

In 2012, 409 people were shot and killed by American police in what were termed justifiable shootings. In that same year, British police officers fired their weapons just once. No one was killed.

In 2013, British police officers fired their weapons all of three times. No one died. According to The Economist, "British citizens are around 100 times less likely to be shot by a police officer than Americans. Between 2010 and 2014, the police force of one small American city — Albuquerque in New Mexico — shot and killed 23 civilians; seven times more than the number of Brits killed by all of England and Wales’s 43 forces during the same period.

So wait, so does this mean that when a man approaches the police and asks them to kill him that they DON'T simply fill him with holes?

The Economist argues that the reason for this disparity is actually quite simple: guns are comparatively rare in the UK. Most cops don't carry them and criminals rarely have access to them. The last time a British officer was killed by a gun was in 2012. In the US last year, 30 police officers were shot and killed in the line of duty.

In December, PRI's The World reported on Icelanders grieving after their police force killed a man — for the first time in the country's history as a republic.

Perhaps the NRA would like to explain one more time how everybody owning a gun in America keeps all of us safe. I'm just not getting it.

The NRA could never admit that British men don't need to compensate!

Gryphen, you obviously are failing to appreciate the... um... recruiting benefits of high-powered hardware in law enforcement.

I mean, seriously, if you're a 22 year old kid, working overnights at the Kwik-E Mart, interested in a career as a copper, are you going to imagine yourself as a proper English bobby wearing a bottle of eye drops on his belt (see photo), pip pip tally ho bob's yer uncle cheerio, or do you see yourself a member of tiny Aynuss, Mississippi's all-caucasoid SWAT team, wearing a matching pair of custom pearl-handled, case-hardened Desert Eagle .50 reverse bore, magnum load, active recoil damper, semi automatics with ytriurm laser sights, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow your head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "where do I sign up?"

    Well, do ya, punk?

That's just wonderful, but the thread is about cops killing people here and not killing people in another country and why. First hint is the title of the thread, does it mention Trig, a school, and Piper? If yes, good job, if no Feck Off, suck a fag and tell the chamber maid what time you want to be knocked up.
Toodles! Say "Hi" to Parliament and the Queen!

Like Trig and Piper attend school, Pffffft!

im not criticizing because you can worry and care from anywhere.

HOWEVER, every republican would be ridiculed for this

PRESIDENT OBAMA - does he hate the job? it almost feels like he has disdain for us!
In any job, you need to convince your boss you care about it...that you want to do your best. Perceptions matter big time! That is why President Obama going from talking about a beheading of an American to the golf course is so painful to so many. We are his boss...he works for us but the perception he conveys is that he doesn't give a damn. He may be grief stricken -- but that is not the message he sends. The message he sends by his quick retreat to the golf course with NBA's Alonzo Mourning is that the business of the American people is getting in the way of his tee time. By the way, even today, ABOVE THE FOLD, on the FRONT PAGE of the New York Times, which endorsed him in 2008 and 2012, there is an article about his bee line for the golf course. PS What is also very disappointing is that I wanted him to be a giant success. His election was a huge event in history for America.

oh get the fuck over it. he deserves time out and time off, he works his ass off and there is NOTHING that says he doesn't deserve a time of rest and respite and if golfing it that for him, then so be it. this bullshit narrative that the right wing is driving is just more of the same crap that is designed to malign a black president from doing everything a white president has done without a single comment. if you TRULY support him, then stand UP for him, don't suck up to the haters.

If there is ever a POTUS that needs a 'break' (golf), it is President Obama. No matter what the man does, he gets grief from all sides. He's dealing w/so many uprisings all over the world....he truly needs a break from it by being outdoors, w/friends and a game of golf.

Give the man a fucking break, America! I support him 100%. Look at how thin he is getting and how gray. Worries me! His job is stressful, but he always keeps his cool, kindness and ready smile.

I do not begrudge President Obama any moments of down time. I have felt safer knowing that he is in charge than I ever did while George W. was in office. President Obama works so hard for the American people, all of us, not just the 1%, and he's on the job all of the time whether in the Oval Office or on the golf course. Sometimes the NYT is just so-o-o annoying.

    5. Of, fuck off, you stupid jackass. If that is your "perception", then you are a moron.

In this day and age, every president has instant access to vital communications.

Every president goes through enormous stress and I don't begrudge any of them vacation time. They are never off duty.

And I include Bush in that assessment. Being on the ranch wasn't what made him a good or bad president.

Just about every president plays golf, usually with other important people and while ironing out who knows what policy issues.

For you to reprint that asinine quote in its entirety shows just what an idiot you are.

As for "perception", please. Name ONE thing this president could do that republicans would not twist and "perceive" to be bad. Come on, name something. You can't.

Why should the president just keep jumping through hoops while idiots say nope, you are wrong and you will always be wrong no matter what you do?

    6. The President does not "work for us."

He serves us and serves our country. There's a big difference because we could not afford to "hire" him or anyone to serve us 24 hours of every day for more than four years.

There is no one more dedicated to our country than President Obama.

So fuck off with your faux poutrage, 7:20. If you truly wanted President Obama "to be a giant success" you'd be acknowledging his accomplishments. You would also keep to the topic at hand.

    7. Nefer, Liz and anonymouses: "fuck off", indeed.

Splendid customary IM defense of our president. He has earned and deserves our support. Individual decisions and policies may be - and some should be - questioned but his commitment to our country cannot.

If the GOPoopers take the Senate in November they're going to be even more oppositional than they are now, which is painful to contemplate. He'll need even more support in the last two years.

On the positive side, Rick Perry says that if his family heirloom Magic Eight Ball(tm) urges him to run in 2016 he will be more prepared and less douchey than he was in 2012 but arguably less prepared and more douchey than he'll be in 2020. Therefore I've decided to wait until 2032 - or until hell freezes over, whichever comes last - before considering any support for a Perry candidacy, just to be on the safe side.

Also, too while on the golf course there is NO chance of anything he says being recorded. He deserves the break, the others are on 5 week vacations. I saw a video of little Johnny Mac, dancing (Yes, it was as ridiculous as you might think) at a party for millionaires. President Obama takes less time off than W did, and gets a HELL of a lot more done than W EVER DID.

Congress is on vacation, and not one of them took a yacht to Iraq or Israel to straighten up the mess that President George "W" I choked on a pretzel while boozing it up Bush started.
Believe me, President Obama's having a blast on his well deserved vacation.

There is always an emergency somewhere in the world. And there always will be. If we demand his full attention for Every. Single. Event. to be "on call" and sitting in his office, drumming on his desk just *waiting* for more information to come in....

I mean, seriously, is there a time period that it *would* be acceptable for him to golf in, one that didn't have any "Major" event/scandal going, that would be acceptable for him to golf or vacation in?

Objectively, I'd say that after setting the initial tasks in motion and while waiting for results is probably the absolute best time to golf- using personal time when you would otherwise be twiddling your thumbs, waiting for the tasks you set in motion to be completed, is actually a highly organized use of time.

I started watching a show on Netflix, Midsomer Murders. I couldn't figure out why I would tense up whenever there was a confrontation between the 'coppers' and the bad guy. Finally, it hit me...I was expecting a big ol' handgun to come out and bullets to fly.

Quite astonished to realize how I had been accustomed to anticipate that level of violence in everyday entertainment.

When we were in London the policeofficers in London paraded around the tube stations, with automatic weapons. This was right after the bombing there. I felt truly safe there.

The USA is not a country for which I'm particularly proud.

It's way past time cops quit killing people! They should be trained to ONLY shoot to maim IF they are going to shoot at all.

They need to stop KILLING when there are other options - and, we have so many videos now to back this up.

I would NEVER call a cop to my house as there are other sources for assistance and help.

Homeland Security is training them to KILL. It's cheaper.

The Boston disaster was the beginning, when tanks were brought out, the transportation system shut down, cell phones didn't work and snipers were posted in cell phone towers. Soldiers with AR-15's searched every car at the I-90 toll booth in MA and parades of State Troopers from CT rushed to Boston. Then they attacked an unarmed teenager and shot up the boat he was hiding in with more than 200 bullets. And the country cheered at illegal martial law.

So the Ferguson Police Chief, Thomas Jackson, has spent over 10 days now hedging and fidgeting and doing everything in the world except tell the truth.

The reason that no Incident Report filed by Officer Darren Wilson has been produced for the public to view or at least acknowledged as existing, by Chief Jackson?

Because Officer Darren Wilson never filed one.

Because the Ferguson PD turned the investigation over to the St Louis County Police, the day of or the day after the incident, it's not yet clear.

    What is clear?

I keep coming back to what seems to me to be the most inhumane thing of all, the inhumane thing that happened before the rage began to rise, and before the backlash began to build, and before the cameras and television lights, and before the tear gas and the stun grenades and the chants and the prayers. I keep coming back to the one image that was there before the international event began, before it became a television show and a symbol in flames and something beyond what it was in the first place. I keep coming back to one simple moment, one ghastly fact. One image, from which all the other images have flowed.

They left the body in the street.

Dictators leave bodies in the street.

Petty local satraps leave bodies in the street.

Warlords leave bodies in the street.

A police officer shot Michael Brown to death. And they left his body in the street. For four hours. Bodies do not lie in the street for four hours. Not in an advanced society.
