Sarah Palin takes on Richard Dawkins over remarks about aborting children with Down Syndrome. Update!

Palin posted the above graphic and then followed it up with this:

Mr. Dawkins, I'd let you meet my son if you promised to open your mind, your eyes, and your heart to a unique kind of absolute beauty. But, in my request for you to be tolerant, I’d have to warn Trig he must be tolerant, too, because he may superficially look at you as kind of awkward. I'll make sure he's polite, though!

Love,

Sarah Palin & family

On the face of it one would think that Palin is in the right in this confrontation of Dawkins.

And in some ways she might be.

However what has to be remembered is that Dawkins is a scientist and his thinking is purely logical.

Which he attempted to explain in several tweets following the dust up on Twitter:

Professor Dawkins made a few rather unfortunate errors.

One is in forgetting that the things he tweets will be seen by EVERYBODY, and not simply the person to whom he is responding.

And the second was in not taking into consideration how the incredibly irrational anti-abortion groups would be in response to his advice.

Now the difference between Dawkins and Palin is that Dawkins is being completely truthful in his response, and she is simply seizing on this as a way to insert herself into a conversation that has nothing to do with her personally and to also kinda play the victim while utilizing on of her favorite props.

My take is that Dawkins should have expressed his feelings in an e-mail instead of on Twitter.

However as somebody who has worked with children who have Downs I can certainly attest to the challenges that they face, the incredible strain on their families, and that I have heard more than one exhausted parent sobbing that if they had it all to do over, they might have chosen not to bring this particular child into the world.

There are many wonderful success stories of children with Down syndrome succeeding belong all expectations. But for every one of those there  are about a hundred others where there was no fairy tale ending, and their lives have been rife with medical problems, frustrating disabilities, and despair.

Those are just the facts, and Richard Dawkins is obviously well aware of them.

Update: It looks like this is going to be a family affair

Did you guys see this? Richard Dawkins, probably the worlds’ most famous and influential atheist, just told a woman that it was “immoral” to give birth to a baby with Down’s Syndrome.

Immoral for my Mom not to kill her own son?

I’ll make this simple: We love Trig. He brings us joy, and I know that he has a joyful life.

Do you think the fact that they keep hammering home that "immoral" word is a sly shot at little ole me?

Huh. Palin has no clue about that dilemma since she's never experienced it. She should, as usual, shut up.

Hey, this is the same bunch who has decided it's perfectly ok and downright righteous to murder young black men in the street. But there are degrees of Downs and some come with much more disability to the point of being unable to be cared for at home. A mother working for minimum wage would most likely be unable to care for any Down Syndrome child at home.

I currently work with the very seriously disabled Down Syndrome kids. They have numerous disabilities, both mental and physical. Many of them - even as teenagers - can not communicate, have serious medical conditions (primarily blindness, deafness, heart issues). They require 24/7 care and constant stimulation. The parents I work with have bankrupted themselves - both financially and mentally/emotionally, and have somewhat neglected other children in the family for the DS kid. While they love the son/daughter, many of them (even really super Christians) have questioned the wisdom of not choosing to terminate after finding they were having a DS kid. They all had the vision of the very high functioning DS kid - that would be cute and smart and huggable - like in "Life Goes On" or "Glee." But life is not like that. Before working in this agency, I worked with very high functioning DS kids. I visited homes of families w/DS infants and toddlers and set up Individual Intervention Plans (IIP) to teach parents what to do to stimulate growth. I can tell you that Ms Palin would not have lasted long in that program.

Does anyone know what happened to the Ruffles baby? Early on the babies the Palins said were Trig did not all look the same. Indeed, there were 2 different babies. Levi held one on his birthday. The Heaths were posing with another in the Mat-Su lobby. A baby taken with Levi in what was said to be next to Sarah Palin in a hospital bed after she gave birth (Levi had blonde curls), that baby looked different from Levi birthday baby.

I think it is a choice only those pregnant and have found out the diagnoses can make for themselves, if they want to abort that is what is best for them, if they want to continue the pregnancy that is also their choice.
But what is totally unacceptable is not seeking out every avenue for your child with special needs to develop to his full ability. That is why the Zero to 3 programs are made available to each and every special needs child regardless of their parents income level. Those that don't make sure their child does this should be arrested and stripped of their parental rights.

As long as it is legal she doesn't need to do anything more for Trig. If she breaks the law, that is another matter. She is a Palin and she will follow the rules or have her lawyers take care of things. Trig has a dog and he doesn't need all the fancy stuff. Leave it alone.

Being pro-life, I still find Sarah Palin's response to Dawkins tweet purely theatrics on her part. She wants attention, and wants the focus on her being a victim.

If she really cared that women not abort their babies with down syndrome, let alone all babies, she would have put her money where her mouth is. She neglected this. She isn't interested in pro-life movements, or down syndrome children, and their challenges, and the pain that low-income parents must feel, wanting to give their child the best, but can't or have to juggle life, jobs, homes, and other children, some without family support.

She waves Trig out in public as a pity prop for attention and monetary support. All she had to do was stay in politics and help legislate federal-subsidized improvements, treatments, surgeries and therapies; and support the ACA, and all financial support groups that offer solutions in communities to help get DS teens and young adults into incentive programs where they can achieve their best potential.

Sarah's mind was on Sarah. She is a hypocrite to engage with this man now, when she has absolutely no clout and is irrelevant.

She goes to a center in the mornings, and 'works,' sorting bottles, doing other busywork, for which she is 'paid' a small amount. She barely reads, and spends her free time watching Disney movies. I have a friend with a 30 year old son with special needs. When her child was young and more manageable, he was a "gift from god". Now he's a full grown adult male, weighs almost 200 pounds, has the intellect of a 2 year old, and is very hard to manage. This child was very fortunate to have been born into a loving and wealthy family. He's had therapy since birth. All the best private schools and help. He is violent sometimes and takes it out on his mom. Her life revolves around him. She has no life. She's exhausted. The family has tried group homes and attendants. None have worked out. She and her husband candidly told me their life is hell and they wish he'd never been born. They love him dearly. This is the reality for some parents of disabled kids. I would never presume to ever tell anyone that they should or shouldn't give birth to a special needs child, but I know I wouldn't. Btw, I am also a retired special ed teacher who loved her job and students, but saw the reality these families went through.

Thanks for your comment, I agree and have seen similar situations. The thing with DS kids is that there's usually more than one health issue along a huge spectrum. Our friend recently made the heartwrenching decision to have their son sterilized for just the same reason. I can't imagine having to make that decision for a child who doesn't understand nor comprehends.

. Imagine the same scenario minus the wealth and have that child born to a single mom with a GED making less than minimum wage.

Many DS babies are born to older parents. By keeping such a child they put them at a higher risk of being orphaned at some point, and these are basically children who will be dependent on them the rest of their life.

Sarah may not have given birth to Trig, but she has assumed the role of being his mother. With that comes the responsibility to take good care of "that precious gift from God." It is pretty clear form the video that Sarah posted that Trig has had little therapy and little experience with trained therapists. In the photo that she posted on her facebook, Trig is not wearing his glasses. For every appearance, it looks as if he needs to wear them to correct some of his vision problems. Without therapy, Trig will not realize his full potential. Sarah's neglect is the same thing as failing to feed and clothe children. She parades Trig around like a prop. (Someone called him a pity prop. Good choice of words). Trig was a symbol of Sarah's Right to Life beliefs. But respecting life extends beyond the 9 months of pregnancy, and Sarah is not providing a quality of life for Trig. On the other hand, it is consistent with the way she treated her other kids, neglecting them, too. (Curtis Menard stormed into Sarah's office and told her to stay home and take care of her kids. One of them was his god son, which is why he had an interest int he situation). Sarah neglected her sworn duty as governor when she quit. Sarah doesn't do hard work, and providing guidance and therapy for a DS child IS hard work. Trig deserves better than he is getting. Sarah has the money to provide the best care for Trig, and much of his care would be covered by medical insurance and Todd's Native Insurance (maybe).

Sarah Palin's "parenting style" is legal only because no one cares enough to report her for what she neglects to do. She has neglected all of her children about what they eat. She doesn't see to it that they attend school. She puts own vain and delusional desires above the needs of her children. She shipped Track off when he messed up. She shipped Bristol to her sister when Bristol had "mono". The world sees how she treats Trig. And the moral examples she displays in front of her children are shameful.

nu uh. grave robbing is NOT legal in ;merika, prostitution, bank robbing and siccing sickos with guns on people by putting gun sites on their facebook page, also, too. You can't yell "Fire" in a movie theater, but can yell "shoot" at a firing range,. (file under "They need money and in the USA they can get it however they can"
Her parenting style isn't working. They got the "Fruitful and multiply" part right, but forgot you need a license and a marriage to have legitimate kids. Obamacare has some EXCELLENT help for folks like them. FREE Phones, Affordable healthcare and school lunches. Why pay a higher tax when a married couple can file jointly?

Sarah's remark is sad. No one has noticed or taken the time to help Trig as much as to learn to eat or appropriate body functions. She offers to warn Trig to be tolerant? He will comprehend? Why won't she help him with proper skills? He is going to understand her warnings? Great she will make sure he is polite, she failed with some of her children.

She is only using Trig again. I may not agree with all Dawson is saying, but I would pay more attention to her remarks if she didn't continually use Trig as a prop.

Sarah Palin is such a fucking hypocrite. Not to mention criminally condescending and phony and full of bullshit.

I'll unequivocally state that if I ever learned I was pregnant with a fetus that had an extra chromosome, I would abort it. I would not subject it to a life full of non-stop struggling to do what "normal" people do effortlessly, or myself to the never-ending worry of what would happen to it if anything happened to me.

And anyone who believes that Palin wouldn't do the same if she truly ever did become pregnant with a DS fetus, is delusional. Trig Palin does not share her DNA; he is nothing and has never been anything, but a political prop she got her hands on through some means I hope eventually becomes public.

Her dishonesty and cynicism are just off the charts. I feel so sorry for Trig Palin, condemned to grow up in the Palin family. He would have been better off if he had been aborted.

The other drain is on the public school system, which MUST by law accommodate, mainstream, and deal with these kids until age 23. In my district that means that get individual educational plans each spring (wouldn't that be great for EVERY kid?) and they have fulltime paraprofessionals with them all day, every day. Same for Aspberger's, and the whole spectrum of disorders that makes a kid 'not normal.' So the charters can deny these kids, by saying they cannot afford to hire the help they need, while the public schools must take every child whose parent expects their kid to be educated, taken take of, helped at the bathroom, helped with math, science, music, and whatever else they take, for the same number of tax dollars I pay to my school system. Sarah will use it as free babysitting.

Exactly. One of my private students is autistic. He's a 10th grader, and plays trumpet. He's doing pretty well, and they hired a guy last year as his aide. Supposedly the kid played in the band, but he told me he never really learned to read music, but the band director in his school needed numbers, so he basically held a horn for four years. So he is zero help during band class when my student needs help with playing the right note in the key. I was offered the job, but no way am I going to follow the kid around all day for $8/hour. Plus, I don't think he needs the help. He needs to become more independent, and that won't happen when someone is there covering for him all the time. I make him tell me about the music and we try to look ahead so he can learn to play better. His main problem is not listening to the teacher for the next piece, or picking up information from the board. The aide does that, which mean Jake will not learn to do it himself. His middle school aide was pulling music for him..I put a stop to that.
I know the aide is paid for, but if I were the parent, I hope I'd let my kid get as independent as he could be, even if that meant lower grades for a while.

I'm pro choice for all women. How DARE one (biological) woman make that choice for ALL women, regardless of the degree, expense, and emotional turmoil having such a child incur with it.

Man Up, Sarah, where's Trig's Birth Certificate? Every mother I know remembers exactly where they were when they delivered, and YOUR own words said "Matsu Regional" AND "Anchorage".

The way I see it, she's picking a fight just to make herself the focus of "persecution" and using her pre-ordained certified "Gift from God, your heavenly Father". What woman in her forties and fifties keeps a life changing diagnosis like DS "A secret" from her family? Could it be Sarah was ashamed? Thinking of her options? Or got this precious gift fed exed to her door when Lindsey's man picked her as Veep?

Thousands of pro life men stick their noses in women's business and it's accepted, Gog forbid a scientist or atheist give an informed opinion, and she's clucking like a hen laying a square egg.

In truly doubt Richard Dawkins even remembers who this stupid Sarah Palin is, and couldn't care less what her response to his tweet might be. She is merely a legend in her own mind.
And the ultimate proof that Stupid Sarah is an unfit mother is the fact that she accepted the VP nomination while still having both school-age children AND a baby whose special needs care should have superceded her own ambition. I'm still amazed that this was barely a factor in the public's eye, and especially by mothers across the country. But then again, those same mothers seemed to find nothing peculiar about her fantastical tale of putting her baby in very, very significant danger by taking two long flights, and then a long highway trip after her waters broke, only to "deliver" in a hospital not properly equipped to handle a special needs baby. It boggles the mind at how accepting people have been over these facts.

Agree Maple. Let's not forget too that she had a pregnant unwed teenager in the home and a kid forced into the military. Only full-blown self-centered half wit parents would think that being part of a presidential election was a good idea "without blinking". Todd, you are equally guilty in all of this. I don't give a shit if he is the only one that appears to love Trig - he was all in the decision that exposed them as the horrible parents they are.

      Maple,

Repubs were carried away with the grandiose yet plain Sarah of the wild Alaskan frontier that as a woman could do it all. By golly, she was the woman to beat all women, in that legend. For a brief time it was not merely in her own mind. Senator McCain and his family really lifted her up into the clouds. There were enough people who bought into the fantasy. None of it could have materialize if not for the people that helped her obtain Trig. Dr. Cathy Baldwin-Johnson was another major component.

To others she was vile and course and no one could believe it was happening. Or it would soon be over.

I agree that Mr. Dawkins hasn't and won't give her much thought. She is a clown character across the pond.

I am surprised to hear people in this day and age call out women for what men have been encouraged to do and not be criticized.

I also note that Palin erred by claiming she can do the job and claim bull shit she never had any help, no sitters, she single handed lay did everything including working in her nonexistent garden ( grass yard), cooked from scratch including hunting the meat. Now is the time for the Sarah Palin pregnancy fraud to be exposed once and for all. That poor child deserves better and Sarah Palin should not be able to make any more money out of this charade.

What kind of therapy is Trig getting?
From whom, and in what kind of setting?
    When did his therapy begin?
What are some of the most significant strides that he has made, such as feeding himself, toilet training, speaking, performing simple tasks.
Can he recognize different colors, shapes and sounds?
How often does he receive therapy.
Do you and Todd also participate in the therapy sessions so that it can be continued at home?

In a fuller explanation on his website – entitled Abortion & Down Syndrome: Apology for Letting Slip the Dogs of Twitterwar – the author tried to set the record straight.

He wrote: "To conclude, what I was saying simply follows logically from the ordinary pro-choice stance that most of us, I presume, espouse. My phraseology may have been tactlessly vulnerable to misunderstanding, but I can't help feeling that at least half the problem lies in a wanton eagerness to misunderstand."

The backlash for his comment had included one mother, who has a child with the genetic condition, saying: "I would fight until my last breath for the life of my son. No dilemma" while Dawkins said accusations of "Nazism, vile, monstrous fascistic callousness" and "fireballs of hatred" had been hurled his way.

He wrote: "If your morality is based, as mine is, on a desire to increase the sum of happiness and reduce suffering, the decision to deliberately give birth to a Down's baby, when you have the choice to abort it early in the pregnancy, might actually be immoral from the point of view of the child's own welfare."

Dawkins claimed he had hoped that his million-plus followers would not see his comments, which would instead only be sent out to the people who follow both himself and the woman who posed the question. He also claimed there was not enough space in his Twitter reply to get his fuller argument across.

He added: "Those who thought I was bossily telling a woman what to do rather than let her choose, of course this was absolutely not my intention and I apologise if brevity made it look that way. My true intention was, as stated at length above, simply to say what I personally would do, based upon my own assessment of the pragmatics of the case, and my own moral philosophy which in turn is based on a desire to increase happiness and reduce suffering."

He also argued: "Those who took offence because they know and love a person with Down's syndrome, and who thought I was saying that their loved one had no right to exist, I have sympathy for this emotional point, but it is an emotional one not a logical one. It is one of a common family of errors, one that frequently arises in the abortion debate."

He wrote: "If your morality is based, as mine is, on a desire to increase the sum of happiness and reduce suffering, the decision to deliberately give birth to a Down's baby, when you have the choice to abort it early in the pregnancy, might actually be immoral from the point of view of the child's own welfare."

He added: "Those who thought I was bossily telling a woman what to do rather than let her choose, of course this was absolutely not my intention and I apologise if brevity made it look that way."

The Palins will not consider anything but what is convienient for their politics I am not convinced religion has much to do with them, politics as it equals money. They may believe 2 cells are human beings and no way abort those cells or it is their base they operate. Fine, that is their opinion. No one is telling them how to choose or that someone else is to make their choice for them.

I've often wondered what the position of the anti-abortionists would be if a pregnancy was going to result in a baby suffering severe deformities and intense, chronic pain? Would they "demand" that the child be born?

Yes. As long as that fetus/pregnancy is not theirs. THEIRS is different & special, so if they need an abortion, God will understand. Everyone else should not be able to get one.

I wish that Dawkins would have referred to Down Syndrome as Trisomy-G, instead of calling the disorder "Down Syndrome".

That way when the Palin's responded to Dawkins remarks and called TriG by his given name, more people could see the lunacy of the name Palin gave the unfortunate DS boy. She named him after his disease.

She has failed as a TV personality or respected political pundit. Now, her pay to view computer website "TV channel" can't even get off the ground.

What a joke Palin is. The GOP didn't even want her (as their previous VP candidate) at their 2012 convention! The Palin curse appears to be alive and well.

He rarely wears his glasses. Yes, babies don't like hearing aids or glasses. But you know what? Because you care for their well being, you put the glasses back on even if it's the 400th time you've done so that day alone. But Palin believed watching reality TV and trolling blogs (HI, you pathetic shriveled bitch) for negative comments about herself. And now Trig will never, ever have a chance. on the other hand, there are lots of funny stories told about things i've said in years past that were taken the wrong way, but later seen to be the honest answers they were intended to be. i guess time smooths things over. explanations and apologies for being honest, direct, and rational should not be necessary. but they are if you don't want to become a social pariah.

Especially given how badly things were going at home — teenage pregnancy, out of control kids etc.? There is a serious disconnect from reality in this family. And there's the gist of it. Sarah Palin is not good at anything. She was not a good enough student to get any scholarships. She was not a good enough athlete to warrant any college's interest in her, and she did not pursue playing any sports in college. She was not interested enough in an education to stay in one place longer than two years. She was not a good 'broadcaster,' and her only gig in her 'major' was as ann intern. The station did not hire her back.
She was pregnant when she married, reportedly carried on an affair with Curt Menard, who soon was killed. She then got pregnant again, and again, had at least one abortion, had Piper and got her tubes tied, which she used as an excuse to not fulfill her share of carpooling.
She got bored at home, so she dragged the kids around in a wagon soliciting votes for Mayor. That job was too big for her, but she loved the perks, so she hired a City Manager at $100,000 a year (for a town of 7,000.) There are questions about the hockey arena she wanted built, as she went ahead with the project before the town even owned the land, costing Wasilla many thousands in legal fees. Her own home looks surprisingly like the same materials were used by "Todd and his buddies," to built the mansion.
Then, she decided Wasilla was too small for her. She was appointed as the citizen rep to the Oil and Gas Commission, hacked into a computer to get back at a man she didn't like, and then quit. She ran for Governor, but decided she could use her looks and cutesy attitude instead of bothering to learn facts and figures. Woe to Alaska, but it worked.
Her ACES legislation brought nice checks to every Alaskan from the oil and gas industry (kind of like socialism, huh, Sarah?) and gave her a great approval rating, so her ability to buy votes was established when Kristol took a cruise and got the hots for her. The rest is history. She was an awful VP candidate, and McCain had to resort to covering for the hate she built up toward the other party. After they lost, she was sure it was HIS fault, and set her sights on a career as paid commentator.
Meanwhile, her kids are a mess. Bristol is still not married. Track is already divorced, and seems pretty aimless. Willow has that expensive hair diploma, but doesn't seem to be able to start a business even with all of Sarah's money to back her. Piper? Well, she may be in school, since she is evidently beyond the cute stage and doesn't travel with her mother. And poor Trig, we all know about.
So yes, what the heck is Sarah Palin accomplished at? Nothing. Not a darn thing she touches turns out well. She can't even support winning candidates any longer. If she weren't such a mean, hateful woman, I would try to find some sympathy for the mess she has made of so many lives.

DS IS a big deal, & as mentioned there are also often organ deformities as part of the whole package. We chose amniocentesis when my wife was pregnant, as she wanted to be sure she was carrying a healthy baby, and would not have hesitated to terminate the pregnancy if DS or spinal bifida or any other problem had shown up. That's not not a selfish decision on her part, it was out of consideration for the quality of life that potential child had. There are families for whom this is a big choice. If they already have children, the disabled child is going to require much more attention, attention that the other kids won't get. While many of the costs of therapy are covered by insurance, additional costs may affect a tight family budget. Some school districts offer far more programs than others, so the family may have to consider moving to a place where the DS child would get more attention in school. It also drains the family emotionally.

Picture the scene in any family when the teen aged daughter tells her parents that she is pregnant. If the girl is smart, having a child, especially a child with special needs, might stop her from completing high school or going on to college. They cannot count on the father of the child for any help. They should be able to consider an abortion for her, since she has her whole life and potential ahead of her. People usually say that she can have other children. Given the choice, women would like the have their family when they are ready to have a family, but that isn't always the case.

Palin (or Ram), seem to peruse the daily news with a fine-toothed comb for any tidbit that could possibly be used for a headline for Palin. I wouldn't have said, as Dawkins did, that the choice is moral. Although, it is. Moral choice for your own family, for taxpayers. Taxpayers donate to support children with all sorts of special needs, and some taxpayers who don't have kids of their own are taxes to support the education of all kids. I saw an article from Virginia, IIRC, when a mid 20s DS girl didn't want to live at home anymore, and was suing to live with another couple who she liked (and whom seemed fine to me). Through the debate in the press, it was disclosed that DS young adults in that state get free group housing, medicaid, and I do believe that all DS children qualify for monthly SSI for life. It probably differs from state to state, but in the same way that we all get to input our opinions on the education of children, we all get to input our opinions on the entitlements that special needs children get, as we all pay. So, it's not just how lovable DS children are, (I know, as my cousin was) it's "who" is paying the extemely high medical costs, the SSI, the schooling etc. Some parents, whose children and grandchildren receive free medical support for life, perhaps due to how much native blood they have, might make a decision that is entirely different from a single mother or working family with other children, who don't get that federal entitlement. There should always be an option to abort any fetus that would be more than a family could deal with. There should always be the choice to abort within the 1st three months, and thereafter according to the health of the woman, IMO. I just don't understand why the DS diagnosis can't be done earlier.
