According to a Republican member of the House Armed Services Committee, there are GOP Congressmen encouraging generals to publicly resign if they don't like orders from the President. Am I wrong in thinking that's not okay?

Courtesy of Medium.com:

Members of Congress have been talking to U.S. generals behind the scenes and urging them to publicly resign “in a blaze of glory” if they disagree with how the White House is handling conflicts in the Middle East, according to U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado.

The Republican member of the House Armed Services Committee made the remarks at a Sept. 23 liberty group meeting in the basement of a Colorado Springs bar … following a kilt-wearing contest.

During a question-and-answer portion of the forum, a service member urged Lamborn to work with his congressional colleagues in both parties to “support the generals and the troops in this country despite the fact that there is no leadership from the Muslim Brotherhood in the White House.”

“You know what, I can’t add anything to that, but do let me reassure you on this,” Lamborn said. “A lot of us are talking to the generals behind the scenes, saying, ‘Hey, if you disagree with the policy that the White House has given you, let’s have a resignation.’”

“‘You know, let’s have a public resignation, and state your protest, and go out in a blaze of glory,’” Lamborn continued. “And I haven’t seen that very much, in fact I haven’t seen that at all in years.”

I am no legal expert but isn't that possibly an act of treason?

Treason

1. the offense of acting to overthrow one's government or to harm or kill its sovereign.
2. a violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or to one's state.
3. the betrayal of a trust or confidence; breach of faith; treachery.

Hey whatta you know it is.

Seriously what in the hell is wrong with Republicans these days?

The President is essentially doing exactly what they want him to do to fight the so-called terrorist threat and they are still treating him like he is working with ISIS to overthrow the country.

The man killed Osama Bin laden! That alone should excuse him from any, and all criticism, from the party of warmongers.

And I think the justice Department should investigate what this Lamborn guy said, and if there is any validity to it, then there should be serious consequences.

I mean seriously can any of you imagine what would have happened to Democratic Congressmen if they had engaged in this type of behavior during the Bush administration?

can a G.I Joe just resign? I think that's called AWOL, or treason, or desertion, or something.

At the very, very least he should be removed from his seat on the Senate Armed Forces Committee. Then then he should be brought up on ethics charges before Congress. (Hard to do that though when they are all on vacation - Again.)

At the same time he should be charged by the Justice Department for Treasonous activities. As should every other member of Congress that has demonstrably engaged in this kind of activity - ESPECIALLY during a "Time of War".

Not to worry. Those Generals are not going to jeopardize their pensions for a politician. I was in the Navy. if you disobey orders, they bust you down in rank, fine your dumb ass and sometimes throw you in the brig.

It is the Republicans encouraging this that should be tried for treason. What are they doing, hoping for a military coup?

  6. From commenter William Knox at Politicususa http://www.politicususa.com/2014/09/27/seditious-republicans-spend-paid-vacation-military-generals-resign.html (read the whole article):

Their behavior is not only inappropriate, it’s illegal under 18 U.S. Code § 2387, which says the following:

    (a) Whoever, with intent to interfere with, impair, or influence the loyalty, morale, or discipline of the military or naval forces of the United States:
    (1) advises, counsels, urges, or in any manner causes or attempts to cause insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, or refusal of duty by any member of the military or naval forces of the United States; or

    (2) distributes or attempts to distribute any written or printed matter which advises, counsels, or urges insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, or refusal of duty by any member of the military or naval forces of the United States—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.

So does anyone have the power to investigate this, or does the House Majority get to investigate itself and conclude that there is no wrongdoing?

The only legal question would be, does Congressional Immunity apply to this crime? The immunity clause is very broad, BUT I would think this could be found to be exempt from coverage. This is clearly treason to me.

The GOP: always playing with matches. Then, when the building burns down, always saying, "but I was only kidding; it was only a joke. I'm sorry IF you were offended." Mental cases, ALL OF THEM.

Lets be honest here....isn't pretty much the entire GOP agenda been treasonous since Obama was elected? They have obstructed everything good for the country for no reason...simply because they could. To the rest of the world it most definitely looks like they are doing harm and trying to destroy our government, how can it not? When u watch the interviews in parking lots & random places of ordinary citizens and they can't name their congressman or have any idea there are midterms or the worst...understand what the GOP stands for, its frightening. I started watching the View again hoping with both Rosies they would take on any kind of lie coming out of Nicole Wallace...and it didn't happen. Her statement that we now have 2 presidents taking us into war....blah blah blah. Not exactly...Bush started all of this, Obama is trying to clean up his mess, not exactly the same.

  10. Of course the idiot's "aides" are walking their idiot bosses
    statements back.

These baggers love to get with the crazies from their districts fired up and say nutty assed bullshit that they have no reason to believe will ever get out to the sane public. Of course it always does.

But I'm thinking congressman Lamborn is in deep hiding about now. But I think what the moronic congressman actually said might me classified as an attempt to overthrow the government. Treason?

Actually when you are in the service our political leanings are not supposed to sway you one way or another, and if a general is being swayed good for him for stepping back.

  12. If this congressman is so upset with White House policy, why doesn't he resign? Unwilling to give up his perquisites? Treasonous asshole.

Wasn't it just last week or so lots of people were angry because Pres. Obama was not calling this a 'war'?

If we are not at 'declared war', the President does not have Commander in Chief powers. If we are at war, he does, and for the military to not do what he says is, well, just wrong.

I got my start into this kind of politics reading one of John Dean's books. Total righty, that one. But he was concerned that Bush (urged by Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove) was trying to 'find' a war so he could have those CinC powers and make the executive branch of government have more power than the the other two. A sort of Supreme Executive.

A sticking point was always 'well, it only counts as war if the USA is at war with an actual other country ("War on Drugs" for example, didn't grant any president CinC powers).

The Taliban was not a 'country'. Hence Bush's fixation with an actual country, Iraq.

So now, anyone braying that this is a war and Pres. Obama should call it a war, also has to recognize that if we do call it a war, the president is de facto the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and everyone, including generals have to take orders from him.

You don't get it both ways.

If it's a war, Pres. Obama is in charge of the military.

The only way to have Pres. Obama not be in charge is to make it clear that this is not actually a war.

Yet it seems it's more those on the right, who decry Obama's powers as CinC, are the very ones calling for this to be called a war, which, if they were granted their war wish, would mean Obama would be CinC?

    ???? Color me confused.

    1. From everything I can find including the Constitution,, the President iis the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Period. Otherwise we would not have a c-in-c for most of the time. There have been various interpretations as to what responsibilities are included with that title, but he is the c-in-c of the US Armed Forces right now.

  14. Lamborn (really? Lamb born? Perfect fundie name!) went to the Air Force Academy a few days ago to attend an event. The Colorado Springs newspaper article on the event had hundreds of comments accusing him (rightly, imho) of sedition. Asshole.

Doug Lamborn is a do-nothing disgrace and never served in the military a day in his life. Colorado Springs needs to be rid of him.

Just once I'd like to see one of these barfbags tried for treason or sedition. Why is treason a crime if it is never prosecuted? Is there no "line in the sand" when it comes to these tea baggers?

...Lamborn thinks a general will just resign for some anti-Obama publicity stunt? Toss 25+ years of service away so Lameborn can ride the press on it? Ya, good luck with that Dougie.

And when W was President, the GOP demanded unquestioning obedience. Anything else was treasonous. That was because he was the president. What a bunch of hypocrites. Hey, Lamborn and Boehner! Do us a favour and resign already! You've been sitting there too long for any good you're doing. In the name of God, go!

IMHO there's a difference between encouraging resignation and encouraging a resignation to be public.

I'd like to hope it's the latter (Seriously; if you feel strongly enough about something that you're gonna resign in protest, make it count.) But I would be remiss if I thought that the former was beyond the scope of the possible.

    Scummy... but possible.

This sniveling pos is my congressman. he also called the potus "tarbaby" & refused to attend President Obama's SOU message one year. As long as he runs he will win as the district I live in and this scum represents is full of racist, bible thumping t-bagging hypocrites who have been flinging themselves on the ground kicking and screaming since President Obama came into office.
dougie lamborn is a proudly ignorant ass-hole that defines the word repulsive.

I won't be back on this trashy site again!!! I have to say, over the last 10 years or so, I have gone from admiring Obama to absolute disgust! Apparently this goes for his supporters also. No one who knows me could call me a bible-thumper, a racist or a tea bagger, and I have to say you people are among the most offensive I've ever run across! I hope you sink in this swamp you live in!

These hypocrites who claim to be such great Christians will someday have to answer for their hypocrisy and unchristian like behavior. You will undoubtedly be one of the first in that line.
