Citizen journalist Nydia Tisdale with Attorney General Sam Olens at start of event. |
But on Saturday, Hudgens’ target was Democrat Michelle Nunn, the U.S. Senate candidate, and her recent debate performance with Republican David Perdue. “I thought I was going to absolutely puke,” the state insurance commissioner said to much laughter.
And then he looked at Tisdale, who was on the same front row as Gov. Nathan Deal and his wife. “I don’t know why you’re videotaping,” Hudgens said.
Organizers of the event said they had barred Democratic trackers and their cameras – which they could, given that it was on private property. But Tisdale is not a tracker. “I don’t sell my work. I put it up on YouTube,” she would later explain.
It doesn’t make sense, but if a political rally is to be conducted within a secret Cone of Silence, then the polite and sane thing to do is for someone in authority to go to the microphone and announce the policy – and apply it to everyone with a smart phone.
From all we can learn, this did not happen. Instead, organizers targeted the woman with the camera in the front row. Brian Pritchard, a capitalist-journalist with fetchyournews.com, sat in the second row. He was not approached. Pritchard kept his voice recorder on and his camera snapping.
Which is how we know what happened next. Clint Bearden, a local attorney and former Dawson County GOP chairman – and one of the organizers, asked Tisdale to stop her videography. She declined, pointing out that she had been invited to attend.
A county deputy was summoned. As we said, Tisdale is driven. She did not go quietly. Her screams punctuated the event.
During the struggle Tisdale struggled, elbowing the officer in the face and kicking him in a shin. This got her charged with obstructing an officer, as well as for trespassing.
Chairman of the Dawson Country GOP, Linda Clary Umberger, had this to say:
“I watched as a woman was bent over the counter on her face, with an officer over her,” Umberger said. “If I had been her, I would have elbowed him in the face, too.
“I was so upset at how they handled it – I walked out,” said the county GOP chairman. It was one of those seminal events, she said, likely to split relationships and end friendships. The arresting officer, fetchyournews.com would report Wednesday, has been suspended pending an internal investigation.
Here is the entire video that Tisdale posted a few days ago.
The remark about Michelle Nunn starts ate the 5:50 mark and the attack on Tisdale's civil rights begins at the 14:17 mark.
I myself am a citizen journalist, who has also been thrown out of public venues, so I take this kind of thing personally.
This woman was well within her rights to film the event, especially since there was another person behind her doing the very same thing.
The overreaction by some in attendance changed this from a ho-hum story to one that is now getting national attention.
Wow, they totally made things worse by doing this.
ReplyDeleteIt is becoming apparent to me that this story has the potential to be a political game-changer, both locally and nationally.
ReplyDeleteSeveral issues:
1) Regardless of how it is dealt with legally, and who encounters and avoids adverse consequences, everyone with any sense or sensitivity knows that Ms. Tisdale's treatment at Burt's was indefensible. EVEN IF Ms. Tisdale is found guilty of the confabulatory charges, that it happened at a public event promoting the local GOP candidates - none of whom intervened - makes conservatives seem irresponsible, and conservativism appear terribly mean-spirited.
2) It reveals the contrivance, underhandedness and misogyny of the bible-belt GOP. I'm hoping it will discourage conservative females from knee-jerk voting for Republican candidates, and prompt more liberal and mainstream women to register and vote. (And vote responsibly!) It exemplifies potential political blowback in the GOP “war on women.”
3) In the aftermath of the Michael Brown, John Crawford and other more blatant cases of law misinforcement, it exposes another (thankfully less fatal) example of a police officer violating the rights of a citizen, showing quite poor judgment, and behaving very badly. This speaks to the more recent theme of police malevolence.
4) Much of the argument in favor of Ms. Tisdale’s arrest is based on the rights of private property owners. While the Burts can hardly be seen as part of our nation’s wealthy 1%, they believed this justified their violation of the constitutional rights of a nondisruptive citizen on their property rather heinously. In the recent challenges to the sense of entitlement of the wealthy, this may be another example of the need for empowerment of the middle class, and the preservation of their rights.
There are many more issues relevant for this incident, but these are, in my view, the most critical ones. I hope Ms. Tisdale’s dreadful experience will come to the attention of the national press as it facilitates dialogue on these issues.
Mr. burt asked the deputy to let go of her and allow her to leave....the deputy wouldn't do it. What a shit fest and bad publicity! They singled her out, why?
ReplyDeleteAnon @12:55... to answer your last question: She was an "Uppity Woman". That's all, Damn them!
DeleteThis almost borders on kidnapping. I love this woman whoever she is. Have fun on your administrative leave pig. These people are really afraid of something. They're afraid of US.
ReplyDeleteNow, how do we motivate US to vote.
DeleteThat is the question! And of course, it is the answer: VOTE the reactionaries OUT!
"Almost borders" my eye!
Delete2010 Georgia Code

The copper will just say she resisted and he'll probably get off because the judge will be bought.
DeleteThings seem to be unraveling at a faster rate these days. Be careful out there y'all. Love, grasshopper.
If the arresting officer had been with ISIS, Fox News would be calling for carpet bombing at Burt's Farm.
ReplyDeleteSuspension is not enough! He should be arrested and fired. Thank God for the video so that his actions can't be denied. Another example of Republican bullying. Also too, what pussies the men were for not coming to her defense. Assholes!
ReplyDeletePlease let us know how this ended.
Hmmm. Tisdale claims it's a 'private' affair. Why is a government peace officer able to 'police' a partisan private affair? Was he 'on duty'? Why is a state official allowed to disparage the President and the law of the land with lies and distortion?
DeleteThe GOTP likes to say the country is going to hell in a hand basket because of minorities yada, yada, yet it sure appears to be more a result of those making the laws, breaking the laws. With impunity no less.
It's scary. The GOP is starting to appear like a thuggish dictatorship party. They act like they can get away with this, and that's the scary part.
ReplyDeleteMakes you wonder how much of this went on, unexposed, before the days of smart phones and hand-held video cameras.
DeleteAnon @ 2:33: ...The GOP is starting to appear......
ReplyDeleteWhere have you been???
Yes, they get away with it, and they have for a very long time with the help of half of the nation's voters who approve of them.
Think about it and help change it!
I guarantee that if the victim in this case had a Teaparty hat and a big " I love Jesus" button on her blouse, nothing would have happened.
ReplyDeleteThe misogynistic idiot guy speaking would have paid no attention to her if she was a gawd fearin' gun totin' rill Murican Christian gal.
The report I read said the victim IS a tea party member and she said repeatedly that she had permission to videotape from Mrs. Burt. Didn't see anything on the video that showed she identified herself to the speaker/s/cop as tea party though. Interesting! and yet another terrible example of police brutality.
DeleteI read of her alleged TeaParty affiliation too. I'm so hoping that's the case. Would set the right wing spin machine in orbit trying to clean that little oops up.
DeleteThe GOP has been hot on being assholes since 2010 when republicans went home to town halls and had anyone who spoke out against them hauled out of the room by cops and security. One of the reasons I danced when Cantor got booted was because he did this shit at one of his town halls.
ReplyDeleteA three hundred pound plus porker assaults a woman a third his weight with cameras from at least two sources running. Yeah, this'll go over well when this is investigated.
ReplyDeleteNothing brings attention to what a stupid candidate says in public than a cop taking down a female reporter for no legitimate reason.
I hope she decides to litigate and wins damages. He deserves to get the axe, but that won't happen.
This is today's Republican Party...
ReplyDeletegestapo tactics.
This is no longer tea-bagger fringe stuff, this is what the Republicans stand for now.
I'll bet your Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, Rick Parry types see that video and say "damn right, it's about time. That's exactly the way people that disagree with us should be treated: jack em up and throw em in JAIL! HAW HAW HAW!"
Please VOTE in November.
I'm shaking.
ReplyDeleteSo scary! !
And you knOw it is because she's a woman! !!
Yep....another example of the "non-existent" war on women!
ReplyDeleteDoesnt make any sense how at the end, the officer says she is now being arrested for resisting arrest - when he never stated who he was, never stated she was under arrest, and so on.
