And 34 years later we are still engaged in meaningless self destruction.

From the first episode of Cosmos, which aired in 1980.

Now in 2014, it's message continues to struggle in finding purchase with a species that seems committed to its own premature extinction.

The world lost a great man the day Carl Sagan died.

AGW is frightening enough. Now we have Ebola up in the mix. It is getting harder to maintain a sense of humor.

I don't know if you've ever read Stephen King's "The Stand" but the outbreak that the book is centered around also began in Texas. I just found it really creepy because that book really touched me in a lot of ways and to hear that Patient One is in Texas I'm sure set a lot of people's spines tingling.

Mother Nature will take care of herself and if necessary rid herself of the human vermin that is infesting her. She does a good job managing things. Just look at the latest Ebola outbreak, unprecedented contraction and mortality rates because of human crowding. In many countries Many people are already starving to death due to overpopulating lands that simply cannot sustain their numbers. The US has a crippling drought and we're already feeling it with an increase in grocery prices, especially meat. Either we begin to voluntarily control our populations or Mother Nature will do it for us, she's already started, now it's up to us to do the right thing and institute ZPG, Zero Population Growth, replace yourself and your mate (one mate only) Two people, two children. We can perhaps save ourselves but only through extreme measures.

Heil Anonymous! China already has it in place, one child per couple, and look how much good it's done there, especially for "girl" children.
In impoverished lands with high infant mortality rates, having more children makes sense..... maybe one or two will make it since the children usually care for the elderly.

There is great comfort to me to know that any species that travel space must have the capability of empathy.

No matter how intelligent the species, if there is no empathy, there is no society.

If there is no society, there is no passing on of knowledge and learning.

If there is no passing on of knowledge and learning, each individual must discover, individually, the laws of the universe, because there is no sharing, cooperation, or technological advancement.

    Which, of course, precludes spaceflight.

So whatever race we find out there, or find us; we will have some protection and will not be treated as mere animals. Barbarians, probably, but not mere animals. A more advanced race will not be interested in our planet for the resources- there is no natural element on earth that is not in abundance on lifeless planets elsewhere in the solar system, let alone the galaxy. Even materials such as Methane are available elsewhere.

For all intents and purposes, the only interest that Earth has to other species is for our only truly rare resource: Life.

Carl Sagan was a genius. I would LOVE to hear his take on fracking.

OT Someone else has the same questions involving Scalia as your post had.
