A planned event on creationism at Michigan State University is raising concerns among faculty and graduate students.
The Saturday conference includes workshops such as “The Big Bang is Fake” and “Hitler’s Worldview,” on how evolution influenced the views of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, MLive.com reported.
The Origin Summit is sponsored by the organization Creation Summit, which aims to promote creationism in places it feels have banned teaching it.
The conference will focus on scientific evidence that points to creationism instead of religious doctrine, according to Creation Summit executive director Mike Smith.
“We want to show the scientific evidence that shows intelligent design,” he said. “We’re not coming to the campus to promote Bible verses or sermons.”
First off there is no scientific evidence that "points to Creationism." That in fact would be an impossibility. (I am working on a post that will explain why that is.)
Secondly unless this "conference" is presented in a similar fashion to how one might allow KKK members to give a speech to students simply so that their arguments can be picked apart and demonstrated to be fatuous, then there is no reason to allow this bullshit anywhere near university students.
And thirdly the idea that Hitler's holocaust was the fault of Charles Darwin is false.
The "Social Darwinism" that Hitler may or may not have embraced, was the result of a misunderstanding of Charles Darwin's work, and was not something that he created or promoted. Which might explain why Hitler never once mentioned Darwin in any of his writings.
If one is looking for the origin of Hitler's distrust and even hatred for the Jews, that is as simple as can be.
If one is looking for reasons to hate their fellow man, that is rarely found in scientific research. But religion is fairly saturated with them.
Sorry, Gryphen, but here I must disagree with you.
ReplyDeleteAll the evidence I have come across points to Hitler beginning to learn to hate the Jews while he was still in the trenches of WWI. And then reinforcing it - as only fanatics seem able - as times and life in German got worse in the 20's! His contention was that the Jews were in cahoots with the allies and CAUSED Germany to lose.
Yes, to most of us, Hitler was Catholic and played them as he did every other group he came across, but to say his catholicism was THE cause - or even suggest it - is historically false.
Was there SOME connection? Probably, yes. Was it the MAIN cause? No.
Is religion dangerous to peace in the world? Most definitely. Your last statement is one I can agree with. Can I agree with what you are implying with the montage you posted? No. It proves nothing remotely connected to your statement, only that Hitler was in church and had some sort of "connection" to it.
Hell, there are pictures of me going into and coming out of a church. They "prove" nothing other than I went into a church or came out of one.
And if one is looking for the legacy that the Social Darwinist misreading of the REAL Darwin left, one need look no further than the brutality of the capitalist robber barons on early 20th century American labor.
ReplyDeleteThey always have to bring up Nazis.... they really don't get how disgusting it is to minimize what those monsters did in the world.
ReplyDeleteBelieving in evolution has nothing to do with murdering millions of people and if they could prove creationism was real with facts they wouldn't have to make such ridiculous statements.
As a Michigan State graduate (College of Business, no less), I'm truly embarrassed that this will be held at my beloved alma mater. It's funny that they are only using one room of the very large Business building, so I guess they aren't expecting much in the way of turnout. But to have so much stupid in one place--it just boggles the mind! I wonder if there will be protesters outside...
ReplyDeleteWant unapologetic social Darwinists? Look to the so-called Christian right, as those dreadful comments from breitbart.com in the next post so graphically illustrate.
ReplyDeleteI grew up "Christian" (heart of evangelical-land--I've posted about this before; grew up in Colorado Springs, attended the same "Christian" school as Ted Haggard's kids, worked at Focus on the Family as a teenager, graduated with numerous people who have worked there as adults, attended the Summit Institute, belonged to the church that co-sponsored Amendment 2 in 1991-92). They don't call their ideas "social Darwinism" and would be appalled if anyone did, but that's essentially what they're espousing.
In fact, the only other people I've seen speak out so clearly in favor of social Darwinism are the bands Marilyn Manson and Cradle of Filth, and that's probably more for publicity and shock value than because they actually mean it. Certainly they're less influential and less dangerous than the religious right.
These creationists are just creepy...........
