The political power of the religious Right is coming to an end, and we have the Millenials to thank for that.

Courtesy of The Guardian:

Even in the deep South, the Republican base of white evangelical Christians is shrinking – and in some traditional conservative redoubts like Arkansas, Georgia and Kentucky, it’s declined as a percentage of the population by double digits. Even Alabama is becoming less Christian. Meanwhile, there’s been a corresponding increase in the religiously unaffiliated, who tend to vote more Democratic.

While the effect on evangelicals is new, the general pattern isn’t. The Catholic church, the largest single religious denomination in America, was the first to feel the pinch. Church leaders and Catholic apologists have been fretting for years over the problem of aging and shrinking congregations, declining attendance at Mass and fewer people signing up to become priests or nuns – although their proposals for how to solve the problem all consist of tinkering around the edges, or insisting that they need to try harder to convince people to believe as they do.

America’s next-largest denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, held out a bit longer but has now come down with the same affliction. Membership has been declining for the last several years – to the point where half of SBC churches will close their doors by 2030 if current trends persist. And as with the Catholic church, the SBC defenders with the biggest platforms have insisted that they don’t need to change anything if they just double down on their existing policies and pray harder for revival.

What’s driving the steady weakening of Christianity? The answer, it would seem, is demographic turnover.

The so-called millennials (Americans born between 1982 and 2000) are far more diverse, educated and tolerant than their predecessors. They’re also the least religious generation in American history – they’re even getting less religious as they get older, which is unprecedented – and the majority of them identify Christianity as synonymous with harsh political conservatism.

As older, more religious generations fade away and younger generations replace them, the societal midpoint shifts. And this trend is going to accelerate in coming years, because the millennial generation is big. They’re even bigger than the baby boomers.

You know the main focus of this blog has never been about Sarah Palin, she actually came along four years after I started it. It has always been about taking down the Religious Right and destroying their stranglehold on our politics.

Remember back in 2004, when The Immoral Minority came to be, George W. Bush had just won his second term in office, we were in the middle of two unnecessary wars, the Evangelicals had insinuated themselves into every facet of government and the military, and secularism was under assault from all directions.

As an Atheist it is no exaggeration to say that I was terrified about the direction we were headed, and what that meant for my daughter and the future of this country.

It is for that reason that I have worked so hard to reveal the ugly truth about the Evangelicals chosen star of 2008, and what she demonstrates about the hypocrisy of that politically powerful group.

In fact Sarah Palin has been incredibly helpful in revealing much of the sordid underbelly of politics and religion in America.  Her fake pregnancy to attract the pro-life folks, her fake Christianity to attract the Bible thumpers, her fake conservatism to attract the Reagan-ites, have all been revealed on this blog and many, many others.

And through those revelations we have also been able to get a look inside the true agenda of the Right Wing which is to use the easily deceived religious folks to amass great power and influence, and then use that to essentially line their own pockets at the expense of those who trusted them and bought into their line of bullshit.

That is why I am such a fan of the Millenials. THEY are the result of greater access to information on the internet. THEY are the result of the Religious Right's power grabs. And THEY are the what we need to break the grip of ignorance and superstition, and to move toward greater enlightenment and a better understanding of our place in the universe, and our responsibilities here on this planet.

And boy am I glad they are here, for it is not a moment too soon.

Early religion was a way for people to try and explain what they couldn't understand. Modern religions is a means for the rich and powerful to control the masses. It is, unfortunately, very effective.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Wants a Citizenship Test to Vote. Sarah Palin Would Fail That Test.

I don't agree with a Citizenship Test to vote, but do absolutely think we should require anyone wishing to run for office to prove their competence by passing one!

Lliz H. would probably fail it too. She isn't the brightest light on the porch.

Ms. Hasselbeck is a know nothing hack who rose to fame by being on a reality show (Survivor I believe). If she ever gets her head out of her ass, she might want to look up the Jim Crow laws where a test was required (just for blacks) to vote.

She rose to fame on her looks and just like Sarah, her time is coming to an end. Like Judge Judy says, "Looks fade, dumb is forever".

Alon @ 12:43, You are so right! Enyone who decides to run for any office should take the Citizenship Test to prove at least rudimentary comprehension of the aims of the constitution. It would weed out the majority of RWNJ applicants.

G I didn't know that is how IM came to be! Did you cover the 7 mountains, Mary glazier all them?
When I read C street and Frank Schaffers book, I could not believe how different "they are" in their thinking, mind. They twist the word "Liberal" into a bad thing.
      Totally not what it means.
They are completely and utterly out of their minds.
Sarah Palin sure know their "dog whistles". She may be a faker but she knows the talk.
      Damn her to hell.

And a damn good thing it is too, for the Millenials! Bravo more education, more research on the internet, more critical thinking,
and less mythology, superstition, and ancient rituals from the 13th century.

I dream of a day when the toxicity and influence of the religion is gone from government, law, business, education and culture.

The sooner we can get rid of tax exemption for religious organizations, the better off society will be.

That move alone will help kill of the mega grifters like Joel Osteen, Frankie Graham, American Family, and the thousands of other parasites that take in billions each year in cash and pay no taxes

I dream of a world 1000 years in the future when Islam, Judaism, and Christianity are nothing but dusty memories in museum dioramas.

  4. But they MUST Vote and vote the GOP nutbags OUT of office. They can't depend on "someone else" to do it. They have to SHOW UP on ELECTION DAY!

The problem, as I see it from this angle, is that the right wing extremists will scream and shout with even more vitriol and illegal tactics - up to, and including, I'm afraid, violence. There are huge numbers of firearms out there now. Far more than five years ago even.

We will also see more attacks on our school system and the efforts to install religion into it, as well, not to mention more ardent private school brainwashing of the current youth.

Deni is right. WE ALL NEED TO VOTE!

Many years ago, I remember reading an article that warned these so called Christians would destroy Christianity by getting into politics. And that article was right.

What do these so called Christian politicians campaign on? They want to cut the food stamp program and literally leave people to starve. They also campaign against raising the minimum wage. They are against any funding for education so someone might get a good job and not need those food stamps. They are against housing assistance for the poor. They only want to cut taxes for their corporate masters and rich friends (and themselves). They don't give a damn about poor people. And certainly they don't believe in equal rights for all Americans.

And then they spew hateful venom against anyone who is for helping the poor and making the rich pay their fair share. Sarah Palin is a perfect example of this. Spewing her hate while saying she is a Christian.

And if Sarah Palin, Franklin Graham, Pat Robertson and just about every Republican politician are what passes for Christians these days, I have to take my hat off to anyone who cries out a big and loud BULLSHIT ON YOU.

Beck Is Praying for Carol Costello: ‘Reveling in the Abuse’ of Bristol Palin

"Beck found it striking that CNN and Costello “took such pride” in scolding the NFL over domestic abuse and yet she presented this case of a woman being assaulted an in unserious manner. Beck called it “really despicable” and said rather than pressuring Costello to resign, he just wants to appeal to her humanity."

Does Beck understand that this was an Iron Dog group? They are all friends, maybe not as big a deal as the NFL, but similar. They were having a good time, a party when these things happened. Sarah Palin came out and said she was proud of Bristol. I'm sure their are those that “took such pride” in this Iron Dog style party and tough brawny men. Little gals who stand up to them.

Don't forget the two dirty dogs are one and the same. Iron Dog has a scolding coming for over looking the abuse and neglect by their players.
      http://juneauempire.com/stories/101409/reg_504604456.shtml

Has Beck even listened to the tapes? Is he proud of ignoring the children's cries? Since Beck believes Bristol, he would know that Tripp was sexually abused to have witnessed or heard what was happening.

It is “really despicable” that none of these people have an ounce of concern or care about the children on the tapes. It is sexual abuse for a child to witness that. Korey Klingmeyer must be charged with his violations against the children as well as Bristol.

Not saying he touched the children, but you know, if Todd and Sarah believe their daughter was sexually assaulted and their grandson sexually assaulted by way of witnessing or hearing, or any other children. It is a must to take the perpetrator of such heinous crimes to prison.

The Palins must do the right thing and bring charges.

Of course he didn't! None of them did or they wouldn't be ginning up the bullshit. The thing is, it does PROVE to rational people is... if they are lying about this, what else do they lie about?
Now is the time to send all the baby gate links and tweets b/c all eyes on palins all of 'em and any of 'em. I think she started this to divert from eyes on her scampac.
Well we can interest eyes in "other things". This is going to blow up in her face mark my words.
Soon we may hear about Todd is a pimp b/c word is getting around. :)
Even Carol Thompson knows if she read the links I gave her. Remember CNN was the ONLY MSM to explore under threat from McCains camp Palins AIP connections in a hour long expose!

What THE CHURCH should do to bring back their flock is pray.
    Pray real hard.
If the flock doesn't increase through prayer, then either you're not praying hard enough
or your religion is simply bullshit.

I am so with you Jesse! Your blog was a delight even before Palin. It was just so shocking for many of us to learn during the ’08 election how scary religious she actually is! As governor she was so disliked by her own party she had to hang with the Dems and it was there she was so easily managed that many people thought she was a progressive. I think the main Bush religious problem became clear when his attorney general’s office was so full of the 4th-tier Christian law school grads from Regent U. Eventually they were so stupid they ran afoul of the law! Bush was picked because he was so easily molded to whichever plan the GOP had during is tenure as president, so it does not surprise me they look for christians who lean white and right wing evangelical. They usually are science deniers like Palin. Her last rant about climate change cements her in the category of scientifically illiterate, easily molded people lacking critical thinking skills.

Millenials have witnessed a decade of continuous religious conflicts and terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan, now Syria. Israel & Palestine as always.
Friends & family members have deployed overseas, some killed, many wounded.
In the mean time we've had the culture wars in the US, essentially divided along religious lines.
So WTF is so great about religion again?

I'd want nothing to do with religion either.

Gryphen....... I came out of the Reagan evangelical time. I was a mother of two, that devoted mega time and money to the evangelical church, at home and on tv. Yep, sad to admit i acutally sent big bucks for years to Pat Robertson and other tv religious nuts. I also devoted an untold number of hours helping build a huge mega church in my area..

I have long since left the clutches of the church and have appologized to my children for dragging them through that garbage.

So, if I can give you hope......waking up from the grasp of religious crazieness, it does happen. But what helped me "wake up" was hanging out with honest, caring librals, i was the straight laced religious lady, they gently challenged my thinking, also they proved to me their care for causes.

It opened my blind eyes. So you keep up your work. It can make a difference.

I'm raising too late millenials and not indoctrinating them in any religion. They are wonderful moral people. We love them, care for them, walk the walk of volunteerism and ethics with them. Much better than religion in my opinion. We actually discuss issues like safe sex and drug and alcohol use rather than put guilt and fear upon them. So different than how my husband and I were raised.
As Maya Angelou wrote, "when you know better, do better."

Every generation looks at the generation coming up behind them and bashes them. As a card carrying member of Generation X, I'm "supposed" to bash the Millenials, but I just can't. I really like Millenials. I find most of them to be smart, hard working, creative, empathetic, open-minded and truly committed to making our country great.

And though I also find people with this positive mind-set in my Generation I also want to apologize for being from a generation that spawned the likes of Paul Ryan, Joni Ernst, Scott Walker, the late Andrew Breitbart, Michelle Malkin, et al. Sorry.

As for taking on the religious right, well, keep on what you're doing, Gryphen. I really appreciate it.
