Just one of the reasons that I support Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers' bill to remove the tax exempt status from churches.
If they won't stay out of our politics and public education then they can damn sure pay for the privilege of participating.
ot but I KNEW Sarah supported Walker for Gov. lol SO CALLED THAT
ReplyDeleteThat cartoon gives me chills.
ReplyDeleteI love Ernie--I knew him 45 years ago when we were charter members together in the Nebraska ACLU. He has had two crusades in the Unicameral for years: 1. Recognize that college football players are pseudo professionals and pay them as such, and 2. reducing the power of churches. He once filed a lawsuit against God, asking Him to stop doing things like tornadoes ("acts of God"). He's a gem.

We have a friend who is a retired minister who is now an atheist, but he still gets special income tax treatment as a minister. "A retired minister may receive part of his or her pension benefits as a designated parsonage allowance based on past services."
Can we clone him? This country is past due on having more politicians like him.
DeleteErnie Chambers is a legend!! He is so much of a challenge to the backwards ass mentality here in Nebraska that he was the reason they amended the Constitution so that state senators can only serve a couple of terms and then sit out a term before running again.
ReplyDeleteThe man is incredible. For years he has tried introducing legislation to abolish the death penalty and for same sex marriage (way before Massachusetts even had it). Of course it never went anywhere because this is backwards ass Nebraska. But still, Ernie Chambers is freaking awesome!!
Clearly we need more like him in ALL levels of government!
