Kaci Hickox never had Ebola and would very kindly like to ask everybody to stop calling her "The Ebola Nurse"-now!

Courtesy of the Guardian:

I never had Ebola. I never had symptoms of Ebola. I tested negative for Ebola the first night I stayed in New Jersey governor Chris Christie’s private prison in Newark. I am now past the incubation period – meaning that I will not develop symptoms of Ebola.

I never had Ebola, so please stop calling me “the Ebola Nurse” – now!

Hickox goes on to call out both New Jersey's Chris Christie and the Governor of her state of Maine, Paul LePage:

This is what did happen: I was quarantined against my will by overzealous politicians after I volunteered to go and treat people affected by Ebola in west Africa. My liberty, my interests and consequently my civil rights were ignored because some ambitious governors saw an opportunity to use an age-old political tactic: fear. Christie and my governor in Maine, Paul LePage, decided to disregard medical science and the constitution in hopes of advancing their careers. They bet that, by multiplying the existing fear and misinformation about Ebola – a disease most Americans know little about – they could ultimately manipulate everyone and proclaim themselves the protectors of the people by “protecting” the public from a disease that hasn’t killed a single American. Politicians who tell lies such as “she is obviously ill” and mistreat citizens by telling them to “sit down and shut up” will hopefully never make it to the White House.

Oh, I REALLY like this nurse!

Hickox goes into quite a lot of detail about the importance of having medical professionals willing to travel overseas to places dealing with infectious diseases, and how the response by a handful of politicians here at home endangers that process.

She summed up with this:

I want to live in a country that understands Ebola. I want to live in a world that cares about those dying from this terrible disease in West Africa. Nobody should’ve had to watch me ride my bicycle out in the open as politicians fed the public false fears and misinformation. I want to live in an America that reaches out to aid workers as they return from West Africa and says, “We loved and stood by you when you were fighting this disease. We will love and stand by you now.”

We can define compassion, instead of being ruled by fear and fear-mongers.

Wow! I think I may have a new hero.

Have always supported this caring and wonderful nurse.

Chris Christie is an asshole and will never make it to the White House! He'd be a horrid POTUS and is not qualified to hold the position. It's all about him and not Americans!

I hate to burst your bubble, 2:40, but there are only three "qualifications" for the position of POTUS under the Constitution.

You may claim he would make a lousy POTUS. You may say he is not a man you would want to see there. You may even say he probably would not give a damn about those he is supposed to represent and work for. But you may NOT correctly say he doesn't qualify.

I suggest you read the section in the Constitution pertaining to the position. BTW, most people are aware of only 2 of the 3 qualifications.

Well, I wish this fine, intelligent, caring young woman the best as she chooses in which country she will spend her life. Because our country is a nation of morons, who elected fellow morons, all drowning out people like Hickox.

  3. I hope she is working toward a public office somewhere where she can be effective at implementing her wants for our country. A country that understands...

All that's left to us for truth is the internet. But as more of us tune out the mainstream media, the louder the voices of Nurse Kick Ass Hickox and others like her become.

We can follow her example; not only attend school board meetings, but run for office and insist science be taught in our schools, along with critical thinking skills.

Never thought I'd say this, but the next time that moron Joe Scarborough makes a public appearance anywhere near me, I will attend. He & MSNBC need a little proactive audience participation.

I've shut out watching MSNBC (never did get into FOX, so didn't need to drop it!) and it's pure heaven. I do everything on the internet and it's just so much more pleasant.

I got to where I didn't believe anything that was said about President Obama. We've heard less and less from VP Joe Biden which I've always found interesting. But, I do look forward to Hillary Clinton running for POTUS in 2016, although I question why she'd want to!! Would be neat having two President Clintons in the White House. Think of all their experience, knowledge and education. They are so use to dealing w/the negative media, I'm sure they'd just basically spit in their faces!

Move away from your TV news channels folks - there will be so much less stress in your lives! It's ALL so negative and much of it is not truthful! Your blood pressure will also drop!!! Haha!

Couldn't agree with you more. I did this years ago (gave away our TV sets), and the improvement is beyond what I can adequately describe. Peace, peace, peace, within our home. And quiet, too. We get all our news from the internet, and a plus is that we don't have to listen to commercials or be emotionally manipulated by people who are paid by their advertisers and told by their bosses to do that.

Idaho Christian faith healers — 12 kids have died since 2011, and nobody’s doing anything about it

"The childrens’ families belonged to a Pentecostal group known as the Followers of Christ, which punishes members who seek medical care by shunning them from their church. According to state law, parents can substitute prayer as a form of treatment. The religious exemption covers manslaughter, capital murder and negligent homicide charges, but cannot be cited if a parent uses any other form of treatment on top of praying for the child.

“If the parent combines prayer with orange juice or a cool bath to bring down a fever, the parent loses the exemption,” Rita Swan, co-founder of the advocacy group Children’s Healthcare Is a Legal Duty, said."

    And then:

" KATU also reported that local officials believe that another minor, 14-year-old Rockwell Sevy, had undiagnosed Down’s syndrome before he also died from pneumonia, in 2011.

Sevy’s father, Dan Sevy, refused to discuss his son’s death with KATU last year, citing his right to freedom of religion."

Fear and fear mongering are how Republicans win elections. I don't see that changing anytime in the near future.

"All that's left to us for truth is the internet."...and that is why it is so important to make sure that net neutrality is not compromised by the corporate media and their pawns in the US senate and house. Obviously, the major ISPs want nothing less than having control over the one remaining means of getting the truth out.

So, if these governors are so into quarantining medical professionals who have treated Ebola patients in other countries, why didn't Texas quarantine all of the medical workers who treated their patient - in fact two of them did end up infected, so why not quarantine them all?

Need to change the statement that no US citizen has died here from Ebola. Today the doctor from NJ (I believe) that was flown to the hospital in Nebraska has died. He was too far gone to treat. He is a citizen. He had gone to Sierra Leon as a surgeon and was exposed. There will be no autopsy as it is too dangerous to those doing it handling the fluids and lab technicians testing the blood and samples. His family lives here but don't think they were able to be with him at the hospital.

It's the fear mongering and finger pointing that whips stupid into a frenzy. Both Governors should apologize, but they won't because fear sells. Hate to say it, but if the victims of Ebola were mostly melanin deficient, there'd be a cure three weeks ago and neither Governor would say a word.
When the outbreak of Aids occurred, I had my kids read "And the band played on", it's a slog of a book to get through, but I felt it was important enough that they understood the facts as they unfolded. Aids was used as a weapon against Gays, especially Gay Men, when all along, it was transmittable to anyone and was quickly adapting to being resistant to almost every med they could throw at it.
I've learned to not take things for granted. I go to the faucet, and have all the potable water I need, some pre heated. I have a thermostat, insulation, and for the most part I have my health.
We lost another today from Sierra Leone to Ebola. I guess the immune system can only take so much and the disease weakens the person to the point their organs shut down. I can't imagine the mothers and fathers in Africa watching their kids waste away, kids becoming orphans until science catches up and medicines work along with immunization.

    1. For years I have been angry that we were not helping find prevention and treatment for Ebola. Rather than spend money to help put in clinics and hospitals and provide proper equipment, especially for Universal Precautions we spend it all on wars.

  13. I really like this nurse too and there is not telling what they will do to her for speaking up and health care corporations hate nurses who speak up and tell the truth, but she is the nurse who should be taking care of very ill people. The doctor who died here was a US citizen who was originally from Sierra Leone. If the infection is caught early enough there are some treatments that help, but he was already in renal failure and headed for respiratory failure when he arrived here.

People have been quarantined against their will for the good of the masses when they have had a highly contagious disease. Such as TB.

And everybody condemned Dr. Nancy Schneiderman for breaking quarantine for go for lunch, but not this nurse. Why the double standard? .

    ReplyDelete
  17. She said she tested negative and had no symptoms. Well, the first symptom is a headache. How many people get headaches? I can admire her dedication to both science and patient care, but you know? That 21-day quarantine isn't that much to ask.

And yes, we quarantine people with active tuberculosis. Most people are fine with protecting others from a contagious illness.

What type of sciences did this (ahem) Nurse Who Treated Ebola Patients use when she said "I know I don't have Ebola" before the 21 day period was over? Published studies DO show that people who KNOW they are infected with a highly contagious virus will violate their self-quarantine. Signed, someone who knows a heckuva lot about Ebolaviruses and EVD.
