Courtesy of Alaska Dispatch:
After holding on to dwindling hope for days, Sen. Mark Begich on Monday conceded he had lost his U.S. Senate race to Republican Dan Sullivan.
With the concession coming nearly two weeks after the Nov. 4 general election and with few votes left to count, the statement was largely a formality.
As you know I already called this race the day after the election.
The reason I did that is because even though I may be an optimist, I am still a realist and I knew the numbers simply did not add up.
However I would be lying if I did not admit that a part of me secretly hoped that I was wrong and would have to eat crow. Crow would taste so much better than bitter defeat.
Mark was a good guy, and a hard worker for Alaska, who actually understands the people and lives they live up here in the Last Frontier.
Sure many of Mark's votes were in line with President Obama, but much of those votes were ultimately beneficial to the people of our state.
Sullivan does not work for us, and his votes in the Senate will be guided by outside forces. And trust me, few of those will ultimate be of benefit to Alaskans.
So where will Dan "Our Carpetbaggerman" Sullivan be living. Moving back to that manse in Maryland, and charging taxpayers like the halfgov did? What are requirements for maintaining AK residency? Will he hire his mom and dad for office work? They were among his big contributors.
ReplyDeleteAnd now that we have a full complement of Republican representatives in Congress, they will have absolutely no one to accuse of not doing their jobs, except themselves. We'll see how well this works out for them.
ReplyDeleteThe GOP senators will pass bills that beg for a veto from Pres. Obama. Then they'll blame the president for shutting down the government.
DeleteWhat they will do (Republicans) is pass Bills with amendments attached that will not allow President Obama to sign them and he'll have to veto them. McConnell has already promised to do that! The Republicans back there need to be taken to the barn and handled accordingly! They need to have sense knocked into them since they assuredly are not working for Americans!

Check out an item on Crooks & Liars. It is a video from The Young Turks w/Cenk Uygur. It details ties of Mitch McConnell's wife's family to drug smuggling. Rather shocking.

AK voters make no sense. During the primaries, they voted for Parnell's oil & gas tax; and, then, they vote Parnell out. They vote for Walker/Mallot and against Begich...for Democratic Party policies, for GOP AK state legislators, and against Begich.
ReplyDeleteThere's something about the (D) beside a candidates name that is a turn-off.
As a former, minimally informed, registered GOP, I believe Democratic Party's identity politics is a key. The GOP has successfully propagandized itself as the party of fiscal responsibility and personal success while the Dems are perceived as the party of minorities, the poor, and the demonized unions. It doesn't take much to understand why so many independents and moderates prefer to identify with the GOP even though it's against their personal interests.
And, then, there's low voter turn-out, vote suppression, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and old, unauditable Diebold machines.
Mark IS a good guy. I hope he continues in a leadership role for Alaskans. He's great
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 8:25 - Yes, you have described the situation well.
ReplyDeleteAlaska is one screwed up state when it comes to voting for just about every person they've put in off and the subjects they've been asked to provide an opinion. It's amazing to watch!
ReplyDeleteSenator Begich is a true Alaskan and has a long record of working for Alaskans. The carpetbagger is elected and he'll do zero for Alaskans! He'll follow the lead of the horrible Republicans that are already in the U.S. Congress.
Thank god Parnell and Mayor Sullivan lost their race - at least, that went the correct way to my way of thinking! Now, it'll be wonderful when the Mayor is finished with his term and we get someone new in there.
Alaska is majority 'red' (Alaska Legislature) and badly needs to rid itself of many Republicans when they come up for reelection. Alaska is financially in big trouble and it is because of all of them - they have spent money like there is no tomorrow and now the price of oil has dropped considerably which has added to their and our troubles.
Hang in for the ride fellow Alaskans! Our financial lives are going to change drastically! So many of our neighbors are already in trouble - look around you - to the families and individuals that are currently on the street or living in their cars. The numbers are going to increase!
Whatever, the idiots that voted for this guy will soon find out how much work he will do for Alaska. I hate to sit idly by while they see their welfare and food stamps and WIC and other Federal programs they depend on cut to the bone and they and their families are left out in the cold (quite literally) but I will get a certain satisfaction from seeing them left behind. This progressive will NOT give them a hand up either...my time of being a reasonable liberal that helps all people is over. Regardless of tax breaks there won't be any largesse from me come holiday time, if you people are so smart let's see you make it on your own. I'll sit here and be warm and well fed and watch my bank account grow while you suffer for you idiocy. Looking forward to the human suffering show....can't happen to a better bunch of idiots. Why don't you ask god for some handouts? Dumb asses deserve everything they have coming to them.
ReplyDeleteAs happy as Begich's son was to meet "Bam-oh" (then senator Obama)...is as sad as I am today. It's not even that Begich is THAT great. It's just just Sullivan is so, so horrid.
