More than 5,000 buffalo slaughtered as part of Hindu celebration, because...you know...religion.

Courtesy of The Independent:

The slaughter of more than 5,000 buffaloes at the Gadhimai Hindu festival in Nepal has drawn global condemnation from animal charities.

Many more buffaloes and farm animals including chickens, goats and pigs are due to be killed as part of what is thought to be the world’s largest animal sacrifice ritual.

Devotees believe the event brings good luck and will encourage Gadhimai, the Hindu goddess of power, to answer their wishes.

Several charities had worked to stop the slaughter – the first of its kind since an estimated 200,000 animals and birds were sacrificed in 2009 – but only succeeded in pressuring the Indian Government into stopping animals being transported across the border.

I sometimes receive criticism for always picking on Christianity, with  comments such as "Why don't you ever go after Islam or Judaism? Why is it always Christians that you target?"

And of course the answer is because it is Christianity that is currently having the most negative impact on the politics and education in this country. Not to mention being used as an excuse for racism, sexism, and the manipulation of the ignorant.

However trust me when I say I have nothing but disdain for ALL religions, and I certainly find this practice both barbaric and inhumane.

Of course we must also remember that in America we slaughter far more than 5,000 cows a day simply to keep all of us in Big Macs. However that is done to appease OUR great god of capitalism, so of course that is to be excused out of hand.

Oh and before any of you start feeling superior because your religion does not participate in such primitive rituals you should remember that Judaism has a long history of animal sacrifice, and the only reason that Christians did not usually participate is because of the sacrifice of Jesus, and seriously who can top that?

So yeah this is pretty gross, but in a world where we are still cutting off bits of our genitalia as a sacrifice to one god or another, and murdering our fellow man due solely to almost imperceptible religious differences, it seems fairly hypocritical to get too worked up over this.

Though I have little doubt that many will.

What is done with the carcasses? If it at least went to feed the people of the country, I could stomach this. But to leave all those bodies all around for good luck. . .smh.

Christians tend to conveniently forget that the ritual of Communion is a cannibalistic ritual; eat the flesh, drink the blood of their prophet. Talk about a zombie/vampire religion.

Do a little real research for a change. Jews haven't done animal slaughter for thousands of years. You are exactly what Bill Maher described in a recent show- too politically correct to attack Islam despite the fact that radical Islamists ARE a serious threat. And you always comment how Christians are a bigger threat to the US than radical Muslims are. I don't know if that is naievity, stupidity or just political correctness talking but you need to do serious reading rather than skimming opinionated Internet articles. I do love your blog except for when you talk about this issue. You cherry pick isolated events and then attack entire groups of people because their beliefs differ from yours. How is that any different than some of what you attack?

So....I guess Hindu's now follow Islam? This article has nothing to do with Islam, but Hindu's.

All religions are a threat and until they are relegated to the history books there will be bloodshed and pain and suffering promoted in the name of whatever made up god weak-minded people feel the need to embrace.

I do agree with Anonymous 6:29 AM in that isolated events do not define the entire religion. As a practicing Hindu myself (in this case, born and raised a Hindu), I was shocked and disgusted to read this. Most Hindus are actually vegetarian and most stopped performing animal sacrifices more than 2000 years ago (yes, some people still do but these people mostly live in isolated, rural villages and are few and far between). Like Anonymous 6:29 AM, I do enjoy reading your blog Gryphen. But please keep in mind that these isolated events don't match with the modern Hindu philosophy. In other words, most Hindus aren't the mongrels that this article describes.

The meat and bones of these animals are actually sold and used. They don't just lie there and rot. People oppose this festival because of the way the animals are killed.

Bronze-age superstition in a third-word country. Until all religions are finished they will continue to cause pain and suffering.

I never "got" the sacrificial part of religions. We did our research and decided against circumcision for our son, and any religion for our daughters because we wanted them to learn and make their own decisions, It hasn't caused any problems nor regrets, but we got a huge "Thank You" from our son.
These photos are cruel and inhumane. At that point, in the sun, all the flesh is good for is dog food. To waste an animal to appease any god makes no sense whatsoever. Neither does killing virgins because, you know, religion.

I've met a few uncircumcised men, and as Amy Schumer says in her comedy routine, "you guys really need to warn us ahead of time that you aren't like most of the guys we're having sex with"! It's a bit of a shock when most of us women are used to looking at circumcised men. That's all I'm saying, warn us. Biologically, yes, we know about foreskins, but most of us have never seen one, or know what to do with it, or whether to do anything with it at all. Ignore? Be Polite?

This deplorable act is done in Nepal, Hindus in India are mostly vegetarian and do not believe in animal sacrifice
