Courtesy of The Intercept:
On Tuesday, older, white voters — who traditionally support Republicans — went to the polls in droves, while turnout among traditionally Democratic groups — the young, the minoritized, and women — was down. Indeed, overall turnout declined to an estimated 36.6% of eligible voters, the lowest rate of participation since the 1940s, despite the $3 billion spent by candidates, political parties, and super PACs.
Yes, President Barack Obama’s poor performance and approval rating undoubtedly played a role in the lower turnout. But the evidence is piling up that systematic voter suppression, including voter ID laws and dubious vote-fraud prevention software, played a significant part in keeping people from casting ballots, as well.
The Intercept goes on to point out irregularities in both Texas and Georgia.
Georgia, it must also be noted, is one of 27 states using the controversial software Crosscheck to weed out supposed voter fraud. Al Jazeera, which recently finished a months-long investigation of the program, found an astonishing 7 million Americans suspected of voter fraud on the Crosscheck lists. That despite the fact that voter fraud is almost unbelievably rare. One dogged investigator, a professor focused on election administration at Loyola University Law School, found just 31 credible incidents between 2000 and mid 2014, nationwide.
Crosscheck scours the names of voters who live in the 27 states, and if a first and last name matches in two states both persons are flagged and purged. The surnames most likely to be flagged? “The lists are heavily weighted with names such as Jackson, Garcia, Patel and Kim — ones common among minorities”, Al Jazeera reported. “List matching is an inaccurate science that burdens, disproportionately, minority voters”, said Wendy Weiser, director of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice. Weiser also claimed that voter complaints to her group’s hotline were higher this year than ever before.
I think most of us have known that our voting rights have been under attack since as least 2000, and it seems that as time goes on the Republican's ability to rob us of our fundamental right to vote is getting more sophisticated and harder to track.
If we are going to have any hope of electing a representative government in this country we are going to have to do something very serious about reforming our voting structure.
Is no secret that far less people vote in midterms
ReplyDeleteAGREED! Yes, I am shouting!
ReplyDeleteHow many people explicitly take their names off of voter registration when moving out of state? I haven't ever done that. I go to the new state, register there, and vote there. I don't go back and vote in the previous state (though I've heard of some Republicans doing so). And I've never been advised to do so.
ReplyDeleteThe USA is becoming more and more like a third world country as each day passes. I detest the Republican party - they are racists and do not believe in helping the poor or middle class.
ReplyDeletePublic election financing, overturn citizens United, and return to paper/receipt ballots. That is what would return this country to fair elections.
ReplyDeleteOnly if you add in computerized districting.
DeleteDemocrats need to start "Get The Vote Out" programs for 2016 NOW!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is the only way to insure that qualified voters are correctly registered and able to vote in 2016.
Plenty of Dems are registered. The problem with this election was only 38% of any registered voters went to the polls. Apathy. Plain and simple.
DeleteTry obstruction - too many people working two or more jobs - try getting time to get to the polls.
DeleteO/T, but a cheery bit of sunshine, the President singing with Willie Nelson at a celebration for our military, who were happy and applauding: http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/11/08/barack-obama-and-willie-nelson-honor-our-troops-by-singing-on-the-road-again-and-its-awesome-video/
ReplyDeleteA little break from the massive frustration of the brazen republican campaign to destroy free, open, and fair election in this country.
Yes ! I am in..
ReplyDeleteThe article said: "President Barack Obama’s poor performance and approval rating undoubtedly played a role in the lower turnout".
ReplyDeleteI've really had it with this crap. President Obama's approval rating is not that low, especially with Democrats, and as for his supposed "poor performance"? Go f*ck yourself with an Ebola-soaked rusty chainsaw. Sideways. I'm serious.
The media has repeated that crap for years; it is not factual, but they all repeat it, because apparently they cannot think for themselves.
Remember, the man WINS his own elections. What was he supposed to do when the jerk Democrats didn't want him to campaign for him? He's not perfect, but he is an exceptional President.
His approval rating is typical of other Presidents in this point in their second term.
DeleteFunny how everyone in the media likes to bring up his "terrible approval rating" but none of them mention it's almost four times that of Congress!
I wish that the media would stop mentioning "President Obama's poor performance" because to many of us his performance has been nothing but exemplary. We have insurance, affordable insurance, we have seen monumental growth in our 401K's and IRAs and individual investment accounts. We've seen a reduction in unemployment. We've seen a drawback in the unjust wars in the middle east enabling our tax dollars to go to more important items within our own country.
ReplyDeleteI can't figure out how the myth of this "poor performance from President Obama" has been perpetuated. Many of us are much better off than we were 6 years ago. The media simply isn't doing its job and leaving people to believe that the country is in trouble when actually the country is doing fine.
Of COURSE the media is doing its job!
DeleteIt's doing exactly the job the corporate owners are paying good money for: to toe the conservative party line and demonize the President and the Democrats.
The media is no longer being paid to provide unbiased reporting and no-holds-barred investigative journalism. Those silly ideas went out of style years ago when the media was bought up by a few mega-corporations.
Duh! IT'S RIGGED
ReplyDeleteIt was a combination of both. I drove people to the polls half the day and worked the books/machines the rest. This is my last election in this district, and I've gotten to know who's who just by looking at them. For every Democrat, there were three Republicans, and this is a heavy gop leaning area that voted in POTUS's two elections.
ReplyDeleteYou can blame in on Obama's blackness, Republican rigging and all that comes with it OR you can blame it squarely on the millions of people that decided not to get off their asses and go vote.
ReplyDeleteVoting occurs EVERY two years on the same day. It doesn't take that long to get your shit together to vote (three months or less!). If you can take care of your insurance and pay your bills (especially your phone -- and Lord knows how much people change those) you can take the same amount of time and interest in making sure you are not only registered to vote but get off your rusty dusties and make it to the polls.
Early voting does not require a whole day off work. It's a few minutes when you arrive because the lines aren't long. All this voter suppression, though real, only has merit when the turnout is low and the reaction to it is delayed or non-existent. It's an excuse I am tired of hearing.
Period.
The Republicans did everything this election they've been doing every election. PLUS they've done it in plain sight and yet Obama won. But, to my dismay, people still had to be repeatedly told over and over again to vote to protect their interests. Even when they've been given the most progress perhaps in their lifetime, they still had to be told to protect. And yet they ended up leaving it to chance anyway? What the hell!?!
It's disgusting to behold. I'm livid that I have to suffer because of the willful ignorance and laziness of so many other people.
Geez, you are an ass. Super ff'ed in Atalanta. Early voting is being curtailed because of the TeaTHUGlicans. Many poor people don't have the required ID, and neither the money nor time nor nohow to get it. The TeaTHUGs have made it almost impossible for college students to vote.
DeleteCrosscheck scours the names of voters who live in the 27 states, and if a first and last name matches in two states both persons are flagged and purged. REALLY?? As a genealogist I know that you could find almost everybody in every state who has identical first and last names in anoher state. Or, for that matter in the same state. Most names are not that unique. I recently went looking in another state for a friend. He'd learned his mother was mentally ill and homeless. He wanted to find and help her. First thing I did was to look in that state for my friend's fairly non-standard surname. I immediately found 4 people who had the exact first name and surname combination as my friend in that other state. Did this outfit tell those they purged that they'd done so so it could be fixed? This is not to mention all the other voter suppressions noted in this story. If they can't win any other way they cheat. And they accuse the President of unconstitutional actions???? Taking a person's voting power away without genuine cause is about as unconstitutional as it gets.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. In fact, why is it that the issue is framed as: "Prove you are NOT committing a crime by voting," putting the burden of proof on the voter. Instead, the burden of proof should be on the challenger who is attempting to deprive someone of his vote. Make it a federal crime to interfere with the right to vote. Make them pay when they disenfranchise even one voter, let alone millions. Whether it be by throwing away voter registrations, destroying an absentee ballot, not providing enough ballots for an election, advertising the wrong date for the election, tampering with the election results, or HOWEVER they interfere with the vote, it should be a felony.
DeleteThis must be said. President Obama's approval rating is HIGHER than any other president at this time of term in office, and that includes, other popular presidents like FDR, Reagan, Clinton etc.
ReplyDeleteLower approval rating at this time of term in office has nothing to do with performance, it has to do with voters being naive, and thinking a president should have met ALL of their needs. So they do not like him at the end of his term.
Lower approval rating at the end of term is normal, BUT as I said President Obama's approval rating is higher than the other presidents at this time in office.
Now, if you want to confirm that you can do your research.
PS: President Obama has done a great job, considering all the sandbagging and obstruction he has received over the 6 years he has been in office.
Check this blog out for information about voter fraud in Alaska. http://electoralfraudinalaska2008.wordpress.com/
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean no one named John Smith will be allowed to vote because they are probably committing fraud?
