Are the police using too much force? Gee, ya think?

Courtesy of The Washington Post:

Recent deaths at the hands of police in Ferguson, Mo., and on Staten Island, N.Y., have rightly raised questions about illegal force and racial bias in law enforcement. But a more basic question also needs to be weighed: Should police be permitted to initiate force when confronting misdemeanors and other non-serious crimes? The answer should be no.

The existing rules of engagement for police in the United States invite violence, not just when officers act abusively but also when their conduct falls clearly within the limits of the law. There is no question that police in the United States can lawfully arrest anyone they see jaywalking or selling single cigarettes. And there is equally no question that any American who refuses a police order to come to the station can be forced by violence to comply.

But should police be permitted to initiate force in such cases?

Well considering that our police now look, act, and equip themselves as if they are on the battlefield I think the fact that they seem to be constantly initiating conflict, and then overreacting with excess force, is really not that hard to understand.

If you dress like a warrior you expect to be in a war. It's just that simple.

You know when I began my martial arts training as a kid, the very first thing that was drilled into my brain was that I was never allowed to use more force than was absolutely necessary. And that I could only use that force in self defense, either in response to aggression directed at myself or at somebody else who could not defend themselves.

Simple right? That should be the mantra of law enforcement as well, don't you think?

I currently work with troubled kids, many of them suffering from some debilitating mental or behavioral problems. It is not at all uncommon for one or more of my charges to act out in a violent manner.

In response to those clients I am ALWAYS expected to attempt deescalation before putting my hands on them. And every time it does get physical I am expected to fill out reams of paperwork to justify my actions.

So trust me when I say it rarely gets physical. And if you do your job right, no matter who you are working with, you should rarely ever have to put your hands on anyone.

And certainly never have to use deadly force.

I think it is time to return to the not so distant past when a cop was there to protect and serve, not shoot first and ask questions later.

Hey 4:20 AM - Read what Gryphen is saying. Killing another human being should be the last resort, not a reflex action. If police are wearing bullet proof vests, they have some level of protection. If all the police departments worked to change the culture of violence and the gotta get a bigger and more guns mindset of the NRA which exists to support the gun industry, the usa would be a safer place for all. All police departments need better ongoing training. If fewer civilians are killed, police will also be safer in the long run. Having 95% good cops doesn't cut it.

I don't believe most cops are good people. Some, but not most.

Cops generalize us, they especially generalize minorities & think it's their given right to kill. So they must first change their tactics for the rest of us, tax payers, change how they're viewed. Most of them are nothing but killers with a badge.

My retired cop boyfriend says 99% of cops join the force because they are power-hungry & love to pull that trigger to take someone out. He says it's not a big deal to take out the wrong person because sooner or later they'll do something wrong, besides they're paid to kill & therefore justified.

Ok ok...I'm sure you can find a "good" cop in the US protecting others & killing little black boys & girls. I need to stop generalizing, but yeah bad & good people come in all shapes & colors & uniforms

Why are you posting so early in the morning? Have you been up all night posting? Aren't you one of those who condemns an entire community for the acts of a few?

So many cops have horrible attitudes. I personally know a couple that beat their wives and their cop buddies actually protect them!

One of my girlfriends divorced her cop husband and the process was pure hell for her and still is. She is scared to death of him and his buddies! I suggested she go into hiding, change her name and relocate. The guy is pure evil!

When your constitution allows everyone in the country to be armed - to carry concealed weapons - to carry weapons that are the same as are used in military conflict, then you end up looking at a police force that looks like a military operation. Of course there is the slight problem of how to keep feeding the great war machine too right? Of course the solution is to allow police forces to obtain used and new military equipment for use on your streets. Honestly, as a person who does not live in the US, you are beginning to look like one of those scary countries that your country puts on the travel at your own risk list.

Totally correct, 5:28. Once you equip a police force with war weaponry, can you really expect them not to (want to) use it? The police start to regard the people as the potential enemy. Remember when police used to prefer being called "peace" officers? Or was that only up here in the GWN? As for those of us who do not live in the US, many of us look to the states where gun laws are the most strict before we dare cross the border. And that's just us white folk.....a dear friend who is AA won't dare cross the border at all. Out-of-country travel is limited (for him) to anywhere BUT the US. Very sad.

Then the police should actively lobby against the lax gun laws we seem to enact every other day in this country.

I wonder if the police departments across the nation have been infiltrated by Dominionist Christians? Has the question been raised before?

I know Dominionists are pitching a battle for control of the military, so why not the police as well? They have a well documented plan (google seven mountains for more than you want to know - just saying) for taking over and controlling all aspects of life - perhaps what we are seeing is their vision at work with the police.

To 4:20 AM - Gryphen isn't demonizing police, at least that wasn't my take-away. As I wrote above, the points he makes lead me to ask questions because I'm seeing a familiar pattern.

Can you honestly say the good outweighs the bad right now in every police department? Where is the condemnation from all those good folk against the bad? Silence is tacit agreement and the good police you are defending are not worth your energy.

The USA at the behest of the NRA actively encourages firearms for mentally unstable people by simply pretending every gun buyer is a "good guy with a gun".

A police officer that wants to continue to breathe has to assume that anyone could be that mentally unstable person with a firearm. Waiting to determine if a person is unarmed can be lethal.

My state is heavily armed. Although I do not own a gun, I do assume that the people I encounter are quite likely armed. I tread carefully, avoid danger zones like places where people gather, shop at odd hours, and keep a wary eye out. These are not luxuries a police officer has.

I watch out for cops. I'm 50, have an advanced degree, I think I'm a decent, I don't break the law, but I don't trust those crazy cops. My ex- cop b/f says they're there to kill & survive, not to save & find who did what.

I am more afraid of the cops than driving in a poor neighborhood, which others call bad areas. Cops will just kill you for no reason & get away with it. We have seen it with our own eyes.

Cops throughout the country shoot to kill today - and not to maim! It use to be the other way around.

They act evil today - military style - trying to frighten people vs protect them. Our country has changed drastically with the media spreading fear of the black and brown folks and the thoughts that we should fight them vs respect them!

Turn off all the news channels folks - especially FOX and cable! None of them are telling true stories!

Watch the new movie "Selma" as we are doing the same thing AGAIN! Shame on America and Americans! Most especially Republicans!

(Fun Fact: Police have killed more Americans in the last three weeks than pit bulls have in 45 years — a roughly 700-to-1 kill ratio. Yep.)

sorry..don't remember where I saw this.

Maybe they could put a snow plow on the front of that armored police shield and the NYPD could help clear the sidewalks when the city get big snowfalls. It does happen - occasionally. Otherwise, except for siege situations (where you how the bad guys are not up on the second, third, fourth, etc. floor shooting down at you, I guess an armored siege shield might come in handy. However, for most policing, just having a policeman or two patrolling the streets might do just as well, if not better. Having this kind of equipment only furthers the defensive posture of police forces and makes the policemen themselves less likely to care about the people they're supposed to protect.

I don't trust the cops anywhere in the USA - especially in my own community and that of the NY Police Department. Their union guy is a piece of ca ca to say the least in that he is trying to cause trouble w/the black communities doing the peaceful demonstrations.

I would never call one of them for assistance!

I can see why all cops feel they're getting a bad reputation, and I can see the other side as well, being brutalized, killed and treated like trash for no good reason. We've been talking about this over the holidays, my bil is an officer and he's one of the good ones. Even he agrees with Gryphen on the use of violence, and the benefits of fitness and the martial arts,
The problem is, if there's a gun around and a scuffle breaks out, the path of least resistance is the gun. And there ARE times I've seen guns used properly, as a last resort with no shots fired.

I work where I'm witness to the city nightlife. cops try to Escalate situations more often than not. arrests=$$$. those that witness and film these interactions are treated as criminals as well. I think police cameras are a good start. *we hired a police Ombudsman years back. NEVER has Ombudsman sided with victim. go figure.....
