Federal judge strikes down gay marriage ban in Alabama. That's right freaking Alabama!

Courtesy of Raw Story:

A federal judge struck down Alabama’s ban on gay marriage as unconstitutional on Friday, clearing the way for the conservative southern state to become the 37th U.S. state where gay marriage is legal.

In her ruling, U.S. District Court Judge Callie Granade found that the ban does not further Alabama’s goal of protecting the ties between children and their biological parents, and that it is harmful to the children of same-sex parents.

“Those children currently being raised by same-sex parents in Alabama are just as worthy of protection and recognition by the state as are the children being raised by opposite-sex parents,” she wrote.

Granade did not place a stay on her ruling, meaning that if Alabama does not successfully petition to have the law put on hold, same-sex couples will be eligible to apply for marriage licenses when clerk’s offices open.

I think at this point it is all but impossible to the Supreme Court to rule against marriage equality in any way.

At least let's hope that's the case.

Absolutely correct, Gryph. Once they refused to intervene in other Federal Judge rulings, the states rights argument went out the window along with every religious procreation bs.

I liked the way she talked about the dog as being so BIG and Trig being so teeny tiny. I guess people were asking if she was sober. Sorry I can't find the tweet about it.

    1. I don't think there were term limits on the presidency until after FDR.

You are right, Nefer. They made a Constitutional Amendment to limit the presidency to 2 terms. It's the 22nd.

Too bad they didn't limit congress as well.

And the best part is that this was decided by a federal judge appointed for life in 2001 by Dim Son himself!

I never thought I'd reconsider buying a doublewide and moving to Alabamastan, and I'm not, but major props to the fed judge who did this, I can say this, though. I never thought I'd see legalized marriage equality for all in my lifetime.
My nephew has been in a committed, monogomous relationship with a wonderful guy. He was, for all intents and purposes, one of "my" kids, he was always at our home and struggled to come out to his dad, my sister swears she knew the day he was born, but her husband took about 20 years to pick up his pflag appication and wave the flag.
Our daughter is planning a wedding to her boyfriend, and we've encountered so many same sex couples and families, and it warms my heart to see unconditional acceptance and love.

Well, but then you have a state like Oklahoma, where they are trying to circumvent the Supreme Court decision by stipulating that only an ordained eclestial person (i.e. a preacher) can officiate marriages, and that any clerk that issues a license to same-sex couples will lose his/her job, and judges can be fired for officiating same-sex marriages OR atheist marriages...

And in thee end those are just delaying tactics causing tax payers to pay for court cases that cannot stand under the scrutiny of any law, but just waste $$$$$. In fact some of those wacko cases have actually helped open up SSM in many states.
But if it's stopping anyone you love, I think the church of the FSM( Flying Spaghetti monster) will ordain you online.

If you happen to be one of those people who are deathly afraid of "gay people" and hate to leave your home because being in close proximity to one, could easily "turn" you...

I hate to break the news to you, but you already ARE gay.
