Years ago Garrison Keillor wrote a wonderful little book, "Why I Am a Democrat." I thought it was perfect.

I love Garrison Keillor! I listen to him every Sunday morning on NPR while I putter around in my garage. He's a smart, quick witted, funny man! And boy, did he peg the Republicans!!!

Wow, that is some condemnation of the far right Christian evangelical wing of the R party.

I think even Barry Goldwater felt the same way. Here's what Barry had to say about the religious right:

    Barry Goldwater
    quote
"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”

Ronald Reagan made this statement while talking to a Jewish congregation in 1984
    Quote
"We establish no religion in this country, we command no worship, we mandate no belief, nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate."

A.J., I have been quoting BG for years. I even worked on his campaign when he ran in '64. Even then he had them pegged - and he was a Republican! Please notice I did NOT write Repube as I usually do. Back then the republicans actually stood for something good!

A lot of people ask me why I am not a repine. I always tell them I didn't leave the party, it left ME! Knowing absolutely NO history they look at me blankly.

And finally, it doesn't matter who tells them stuff like that, they will only accept what they WANT to hear - even from their hero Ronnie Raygun. (I worked against his campaign in the '80 election, by the way.)

Sorry. I just noticed that the text in my post somehow was changed. (I think by my damned auto word in my Apple!) The word should read repube, not repine!

Alabama's first openly gay lawmaker threatens to 'out' officials having extramarital affairs from al.com
Now, this is the way to do it. Call out those who are nominal Christians, and they are the dominant Alabama Republicans.

    That's scathingly brilliant.

Bullies with bibles. Christians of convenience. Great description. That is just what they are.

And hey, Alabama gay lawmaker guy. Don't just threaten. Go to it and do it. It's not just us (Americans) the whole damn world is so sick of these lying hypocrites. They can't, don't, won't live by the rules of their own god but they sure as hell demand that everybody else does.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. What a brilliant quote.
