Leaders from across the world, including some countries with less-than-stellar freedom of expression records, linked arms and headed up a massive unity rally through the streets of Paris on Sunday to pay tribute to the 17 people killed in France by Islamist terrorist this past week. More than 1 million are expected to take part in what could very well be the largest march through the streets of Paris in modern times, notes Reuters.
Maybe we have finally had enough of being bullied and are ready to treat Islam like every other stupid and unnecessary religious faith despite their immature tantrum throwing and threats to murder or maim those who dare to do so.
By the way here is the cartoon that is credited with inspiring the attack on Charlie Hebdo.
Here it is translated.
In other words it is suggesting that if Mohammad were to return today he would not understand the actions of his followers, and they would be unable, and unwilling, to accept him as he is rather than how they imagine him to be.
Isn't that provocative?
I think this image should be shared far and wide simply as an act of defiance in the face of terrorism, and out of respect for those who would not be silenced.
I do believe the same thing would happen if Jesus were to return. A lot of his purported followers would refuse to recognize him for who he is. I don't know if they would kill him, but they would refuse to recognize him. Fundamentalism knows no sect.
ReplyDeleteAnd as I have said before, fanaticism for ANY reason is dangerous.
DeleteIf you took off the white hat/turban and changed the beard to brown and had the guy with a knife changed to a guy with a gun and a bible....
DeleteThe fundy domestic terrorist of "merkika"! And Jebus when he comes back to tip the tables on the money changers....Same fucking thing!
Even uttering the words "when Jesus returns" is just odd and illogical.
DeleteExactly. A lot of people like running around with the WWJD stickers on their cars, but if they actually did what Jesus would do, it wouldn't be the crap that they do now. Jesus had that whole socialist thing about housing the homeless, clothing the naked, feeding the hungry, instead of making them pull themselves up by their own bootstraps.

____
You're missing the POINT which is: Fundamentalism in any RELIGION/CULT is KRAZY and nuts!
The people with WWJD on the cars that is SNARK! As in when Sarah Palin says "Waterboading is how we baptize our terrorists" one might snarkily say WWJD!?
Just b/c what she said was so "ungodly and horrifying".
Yes I agree Jesus had the whole "Socialist" feed the poor and dump the money changers tables going on WWJD is be HORRIFIED at what all and any RELIGION is spewing shit and making war in his name!!!
poet William Blake: “The vision of Christ thou dost see my Vision's greatest enemy"
DeleteWell, there's that....
ReplyDeleteAnd then we have the former employee at Charlie named Sine, who did a joke about former president Sarkozy and got fired. Oh, he not only got fired, he had charges filed and was charged and prosecuted for hate speech. Mustn't say anything about Jews. Evidently, silencing some people is ok.
orlin sellers
Get your facts right. It was NOT about the French President , Nikolas, it was about his son Jean.
DeleteAnd it was not about Jews, it was a nasty remark about the fact that the young Mr Sarkozy was thinking of converting to Judaism, but the Cartoonist named Sine claimed he was "doing it for the money"
Orlin, when are you going to learn that if you are posting at IM you are going to get called out for accuracy of posts? This isn't WND or Blaze where lies and Fox bullshit goes unchallenged.
Just in case you didn't know, which I'm sure you don't, in France and Germany, racial slurs and hate speech have a good reason for carrying harsher penalties than they do here in the USA. I"ll let you figure it out, if you can.
Why bother posting here anyway, isn't Twitchy calling you?
Oh, no, Orlin, don't tell me you're one of those people who screams "the Joos!" at the drop of a hat.
DeleteOrrin,
DeleteJudaism is just as bad as all of the other religions. Religious people tend to be, as a whole, misguided and insensitive people who need to learn to think for themselves, period.
I'm sorry A J Billings, but I don't see that a satire about someone converting to Judaism "for money" is "not about Jews." And a story about the President's son is indeed about Sarkozy, being related to the head of state makes the story explicable.
DeleteAs for the strict laws about hate speech in France, I take it you mean that it is because of the Nazi era. Such laws, in France, go back to the earliest days of the Republic. The US is unusual in having an unrestricted right of free speech.
Incidentally, this story does not feature the truly offensive cartoons from that publication - showing exposed anuses, sodomy of religious figures, etc.
Incidentally, I am the poster Orange, not the anon above. I can't sign in properly from this computer.
Billings,
DeleteSine was fired by Charlie.
Fact: Yes or No?
Sine was prosecuted because in France free speech is not truly allowed
Fact: Yes or No?
Thanks Anon 6:08
for making my 3rd point.
orlin sellers.
I'm sorry 6:08/orange
DeleteA story accusing someone of converting to Judaism has nothing to do with Jews. It's about the person converting. AJ was right to correct Orlin. His facts were sloppy.
Orlin seems to be a provocation troll. Always shows up to stir shit and contradict. His facts seems to usually be shoddy or incomplete.
DeleteThey are brave to publish that image, but it reminds me of how most of the mega churches in the USA
ReplyDeleteIf a dirty sweaty carpenter wandered in for Sunday service without his suit and tie, and started disagreeing with their prosperity gospel, and the hatred they express for non believers, Jesus would get treated the same way
Oh, and O/T , boy are the C4Pee's in huge snit tonight that someone DARED To post an article that doesn't portray Queen Esther as the next President
http://conservatives4palin.com/2015/01/sarah-palin-make-ted-cruz-president.html
Now , of course you have to know this is fantasy, and the author is just speculating that Ted Cruz will be the nominee.
But this kids, is an official POST on Her Worship's website and bastion of all that's Palin sanctified, and some of the Pbots are threatening to never return because of it
relax already...she is just being all pissified because ol Patreaus is in the hot seat...and I am guessing her John Boy is next and he will toss Sarah like a tator tot to the hungry federal law dogs...doncha like a pitbull?
DeleteThe Pee'rs fight about the Cruz article is very epic and fun. I love to watch these ill-informed and very insular people go at each other. Who needs a pit full of lions when these morons "eat" each other on a regular basis. Good times and extremely satisfying entertainment.

Oh so THAT's what its about!? I've been seeing some random trolling spewing how great Johnboi was a returning from the Hanoi Hilton bla, bla, bla hero, bla, bla, bla....
I wondered where THAT came out of the blue.
I would LOVE to see him toss her into a hot frying pan a lone tater tot of KrAzy and watch her fucking MELT!!!
Unfortunately, this "cartoon" appeared following 40+ years of serious discrimination, if not overt legislation, against Muslim immigrants and citizens of France. Muslims in France are treated like Black people in the U.S. They are hated and reviled and are often the objects of restrictive legislation. Muslim women especially are targets if they wear the 'hijab' [scarf]. It's a complicated issue, far more complex than U.S. tv news programs capable of [or interested in] communicating.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sad, hateful world we live in. Peace. 🗼
DeleteFrance is a secular society, and based on that the government has every right to not allow people to wear religious garb and display their religiosity in the streets. If anyone of any religion feels "put upon" in France they are welcome to go back to their fractured third-world, war-torn countries and France won't care a bit. Leave if you don't like it or act like a proper Frenchman.
DeleteLet's not get carried away about the situation of people of arab origin in france. One, they came willingly, which is a pretty important difference with regards to african americans. Two, it would be absolutely illegal for any law to target a subsection of its citizens. France has had a zero immigration policy since the late 70's, so most french people of arab descent have been here a long time, and the kids are 2nd or 3rd generation by now. Three, 'races' are not recognized in france, only the status of french citizen matters with all public services. There remain discrimination, to be sure, and years of economic hardship have probably (there are no stats because you cannot isolate by 'race' in stats in france, it is illegal) hit 'arabs' the hardest, but as a whole, they are a vibrant part of french society.
DeleteIslam is more of a problem. The thing is islam is likely the number one religion in france, with about 4% of the people adhering to it. Catholicism is at around 4%, and then there's no other faith that would cross the 1% threshold. French society is pretty anti-religious, for instance it is forbidden to wear a "large cross" or a kippa in public spaces. Islam, being the number one religion, was bound to take the place of catholicism in becoming a target for anyone on the left, and that includes ridicule, satire, etc. But do not presume that arabs in france are all muslims, it is estimated 2/3 of them actually are atheists or agnostics, down from 3/4 10 years ago.
Islam, however, has managed to root itself in some communities, and sometimes it is a pretty conservative strand of islam, hence a lot of clashes with a french society that does not look favorably upon religious practice.
Thank you, Anonymous4:56 PM, for a well stated description of the situation in France. Most people here have no idea. They just make crap and promote false equivalencies.
DeleteRight on, 4:41! I remember once going to Las Vegas in the middle of summer (yeah, I know... :/ ) Anyway, I went on the free tram between the casinos, and in came an Arab couple with a child in a stroller. The GUY was in shorts and short sleeves. The WOMAN was wearing a tan Hijab - not only covered from head to toes, but in addition to that, she wore her head scarf down over her eyes, so she could ONLY see the ground right in front of her. She could NOT see ANYTHING above ankle level! WHY GO TO LAS VEGAS AND TAKE YOUR WIFE , if you do not want her to see any of the debaucheness (Sp?)?
DeletePart of me feels it should go viral, just to show the terrorists they didn't win, but part of me says it worn't work, and cause more death, mysery and destruction.
ReplyDeleteI want to know where are the moderate Muslim voices denouncing the terrorism? I'm not religious, but wouldn't want to be included nor counted along with the radicals. So where are they? What we really need is decisive action like President Bush after 911. We got attacked on our soil, and his solution was "Go Shopping, already"
Bush didn't really know what to do after 9-11 because his actual administration let that happen in order to achieve the means to their ends.
DeleteGo viral? It's not exactly a secret. This is not some internet meme.
DeleteI've never met a christian that understands the first thing about the message that their Jesus conveyed. Religion tends to distort the message of perceived prophets and instead acts in brutal self interest, leading to the demise of those who don't think the same as them. That being said, the message is lost with most religious adherents and they are hateful warmongers for what they perceive as the intent of their various gods, when they totally are missing the mark. I'm happy to be an Atheist, because we live our lives independent of madness and adherence to a dangerous belief.
ReplyDeleteEver wonder, which religions are the most violent ones? Look no further than the Middle East! ALL THREE religions - Islam, Christianity and Judaism came from there. All three want to suppress women. All three do not tolerate outsiders. All three want to use violent means to convert others to their beliefs.
ReplyDeleteKind of interesting, isn't it?!
Considering that all three actually worship the same god, it's not surprising at all that their attitudes and dogma are so similar.
Deletere: If Mohammad were to return today...
ReplyDeleteIf Reagan were to return today, his followers would call him a commie liberal.
WOW, so the fact that these idiots killed a dozen people over this cartoon - proves the point of the cartoon!
ReplyDeleteHow painfully ironic.
In France, it's not allowed to have one's face covered as to make you unrecognizable in public, and that's all there is to those laws (and mardigras and other festive occasions are exempted from the law, of course). Besides that, when working for the government in public spaces or when attending school, all head wear is banned. All. Not just the scarf !
ReplyDeletePresident Obama is getting cracked on for not joining his fellow world leaders in "heading up" this protest. Well, here's an interesting look at how the world leaders did NOT actually head up the protest. Their appearance was essentially a photo op posed on a side street.
