State of the Union open thread. Update.

I think I am on record as saying that I am not a big fan of the open thread.

However I think that this state of the union speech tonight is going to be historic, some bits have already leaked out, and that it will not only lay out the President's plans for the next two yeas but also piss the Republicans off like nobody's business.

In other words it will be great TV.

As we go into the speech the President's approval ratings have now risen to 50% in some polls, he has a new tax proposal, and it appears that he is focused with laser like intensity on his legacy and is daring any Republican to try and stop him.

Update: Here is the full text of the speech so that you can follow along.

Update:

Favorite line of the night.

Update: Here is the full speech.

This may be the best SOTU I have ever heard.

Republicans Thought They Were Humbling Obama Instead They Released A Charging Bull

Congressional Republicans are shocked and on the defensive because President Obama has refused to be humbled by their election victory. The president has responded to the Republican takeover of congress with a flurry of action that has destroyed Boehner and McConnell’s agenda.

Republicans expected the “let’s work together” president of years past. Instead, what they have gotten is a president who appears to have learned that congressional Republicans have no interest in real compromise, so Obama went on the offensive and was ready for a fight. Besides being the Democratic counterpoint to the Republican agenda, the president is also setting his party up for 2016.

...John Boehner and Mitch McConnell misjudged the president’s reaction to the defeat and the political environment. The Republican-controlled Congress has had no honeymoon with the American people. The president’s approval ratings have risen while theirs have stayed near record lows.

It turns out that it was Senate Democrats not House Republicans who were holding the president back, and instead of being humbled, Barack Obama has been unleashed.

And he's gonna show us just how unleashed he is tonight!

My President is so amazing. They just can't trip him up. Their hatred just makes President Obama shine even more. Beautiful man to his core.

He has had a few missteps but unlike other people and their "Queen" I don't worship our elected leader and understand that he is very human that will occasionally disappoint but more often inspire.

The SOTU was a combination of the concrete and the inspirational. Wonderfully crafted and delivered...one of his best speeches.

I don't have the stomach...or sense of humor...of many of you and am not watching pundit discussion of the speech or any of the GOP rebuttals. I just don't care what any of them think, except......

I'm anxiously awaiting a response from Bristol Palin and count on IM covering it.

Oh, I have MSNBC on with the sound muted and saw Joni Ernst registering a negative response from both Dems and GOP. I'll wait for Jon Stewart and IM for the blow-by-blow of that speech.

Loved President Obama's speech and thought Boehner his typical self/Republican! He clapped when it benefitted their party (veterans) and that was about all.

Think the disrespect shown our President by the Republican Party in the chamber was god awful! They should all be taken out to the barn and beat to bloody pulps - then they'd possibly learn what lack of respect really is!

There was a Republican that beat feet to get away from the POTUS when he was leaving and shaking hands. They had him on camera and it was a riot watching him. Think it was obvious to the President Obama too! Bet he'd love to deck some of those assholes!

Growing up we sometimes put bread bags over our socks before putting our feet in snow boots. It had nothing to do with being poor (although we sorta were). It had to do with another layer of insulation - and waterproofing - in sub zero temps.

Great Speech, but I wish he had a more forceful ending.

Loved the rebuttal! What an idiot! Joni with the bread bags on her feet cuz her family was too cheap to buy boots, I was waiting for the part about having to walk 5 miles to school in the snow. She is giving Palin a run for her money with who can be the frontier woman. Next we will find out her parents are millionaires.

Joni also blew it with the New Republican Congress is going to get stuff done-no they will be fighting each other and it will be business as usual-nothing.

The Republicans chose not to applaud or respond in any positive way (and Boehner kept his sphincter face pinched tightly) during the mention of:
    1. higher minimum wages for struggling families
    2. equal pay for women
    3. accessible childcare
    4. greater access to higher education
    5. making everyone pay their fair share of taxes

Noooo, the GOP isn't waging a war on the poor, middle class or women and legislating strictly for the benefit of the 1%!!! Really, really, they're NOT!!! Honest!

Please. When we HAD a majority, they blocked every damn thing anyway. I kind of like this...he can just veto the policies that will hurt the people and say why. The people are not dumb. AND we will be voting in 2016. Let the GOP sink themselves. They do not know how to govern, and have no inclination to learn, so they will talk themselves out of their jobs.

A video of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) messing up his response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address was uploaded to YouTube and quickly removed Tuesday night.

In the video, Cruz spoke for just under a minute before pausing to try again.

"Eh, lemme start over," Cruz said before the video cut to the beginning of his remarks for a second time.

Cruz's team pulled the video from YouTube, but luckily we have it right here for you to see. Check it out above.

Joni Ernst begins with a Palin-ism. She tells her waiting audience that she's not going to discuss the SOTU, but wants to talk about her. Notice she went on about MeMeMe. Her hard times wearing bread bags for keeping rain out or for warmth. I heard people all over mention that's how they kept warm. They'd put plastic inside their boots to keep the dampness or snow or rain from leaking in.

What's so inspiring about her story? She wants to repeal O-Care. Her delivery was over-the-top phony. She sounded like (what I'd imagine Mr. Rogers' wife to sound like).

This is how grown ups must treat children in order to help them take responsibility for their actions, so President Obama is right to let Republicans know that if they want to try to embarrass him publicly, he has no problem humiliating them with the facts.

It was good to see this president embrace some of his accomplishments on the biggest political stage of the year. The president took credit for the reduced dependence on foreign oil and noted end of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The president balanced optimism for the future with a clear message for Republicans that he will not step aside and let them dismantle everything that the country has achieved.

This was a dominate performance by the president. He reminded Republicans that they were wrong about the economy, wrong about the minimum wage, wrong about climate change, and wrong in the love and admiration for Putin during his State Of The Union.

President Obama didn’t walk into a lion’s den tonight. He showed Republicans that he is their beastmaster. Barack Obama put congressional Republicans on notice that he is a force to reckoned with.
