However I think that this state of the union speech tonight is going to be historic, some bits have already leaked out, and that it will not only lay out the President's plans for the next two yeas but also piss the Republicans off like nobody's business.
In other words it will be great TV.
As we go into the speech the President's approval ratings have now risen to 50% in some polls, he has a new tax proposal, and it appears that he is focused with laser like intensity on his legacy and is daring any Republican to try and stop him.
Update: Here is the full text of the speech so that you can follow along.
Update:
"I have no more campaigns to run ... [GOP applaud] .... I know, because I won both of them"

Favorite line of the night.Update: Here is the full speech.
This may be the best SOTU I have ever heard.
Republicans Thought They Were Humbling Obama Instead They Released A Charging Bull
ReplyDeleteCongressional Republicans are shocked and on the defensive because President Obama has refused to be humbled by their election victory. The president has responded to the Republican takeover of congress with a flurry of action that has destroyed Boehner and McConnell’s agenda.
Republicans expected the “let’s work together” president of years past. Instead, what they have gotten is a president who appears to have learned that congressional Republicans have no interest in real compromise, so Obama went on the offensive and was ready for a fight. Besides being the Democratic counterpoint to the Republican agenda, the president is also setting his party up for 2016.
...John Boehner and Mitch McConnell misjudged the president’s reaction to the defeat and the political environment. The Republican-controlled Congress has had no honeymoon with the American people. The president’s approval ratings have risen while theirs have stayed near record lows.
It turns out that it was Senate Democrats not House Republicans who were holding the president back, and instead of being humbled, Barack Obama has been unleashed.
http://www.politicususa.com/2015/01/20/republicans-thought-humbling-obama-released-charging-bull.html
And he's gonna show us just how unleashed he is tonight!
Half the fun for me of watching the SOTU and other such speeches is watching the facial expressions of those sitting behind the POTUS.
ReplyDeleteMine too hedge. I will also delight in the Repub and Tea Party rebuttals. Gonna be hard to beat Rubio's water grab though
DeleteSheesh

SOTU
ReplyDeletehttp://www.whitehouse.gov/sotu
My President is so amazing. They just can't trip him up. Their hatred just makes President Obama shine even more. Beautiful man to his core.
ReplyDeleteHe has had a few missteps but unlike other people and their "Queen" I don't worship our elected leader and understand that he is very human that will occasionally disappoint but more often inspire.
I have a request for my visitors today.
ReplyDeleteIf any of you can find an embeddable video of the speech after the President finishes I would like to add it to this post tonight.
The same holds true for Joni Ernst's response.
Should at least be good for a laugh.
I suspect that the Obama Diary will have the SOTU, not likely they'll have ol' pig castrator's.
DeleteYou know the Tparty is gonna give a response too, yes?
DeleteAnd of course Simple Sarah will be quick to throw her poison darts not too long afterwards.
Rep. Curt Clawson (R-Fla.) will give a tea party rebuttal.

DeleteHere comes the First Lady.
ReplyDeleteAnd she looks classy and gorgeous, as usual!
DeleteSarah, thats how you wear that top. Great choice!!
Delete-DontHatetheGame
I'm thinking we should draft her for 2016, smart lady she is.
DeleteAnyone know if the gop brought any controversial guests this year?
Mildred
Yeah, isn't Ted Nugent and Sarah there?
DeleteMichelle looks fabulous! As usual. Our First Lady is always so lovely and gracious and well presented. I just LOVE her!

Here comes the man himself.
ReplyDeleteLotta love from both sides of the aisle right now.
DeleteGoing to end soon though.
omg, he is so gray!
DeleteMildred
Its amazing he hasn't lost his hair with the congress he
Deletehas had to deal with.
Steve Schmidt whining about how the President doesn't spend all his time with Congress.
ReplyDeleteTell us everything you know about Sarah Palin or shut the hell up, Steve Schmidt.
DeleteBoehner looks constipated again.
ReplyDeleteSomebody get that man some prune juice.
I told Mr. Knishes that Boner now looks like a old, deflated football...
DeleteI've always thought the same about him. All that alcohol has dried him up and pickled him.
DeleteHe really needs to add some more fiber to his diet.
It is so petty to see the Republicans just sitting there when everything he has accomplished is true, the State of the Union IS strong!
ReplyDeleteYep...weepy is looking like he needs to take a dump
ReplyDeleteSheesh
"The state of the union is strong."
ReplyDeleteI think both sides of the aisle rose to clap for that.
Kinda surprising.
"Strong tight knit family"
ReplyDeleteAnd just a wee disfunctional, but..
Mildred
I was surprised to see that elevation is well Gryphon
ReplyDeleteSheesh
11 million jobs ins five years.
ReplyDeleteThey better clap for that.
They had better be clapping for ALL of it.
DeleteTake that, sp, when The President thanks and praises the military it is real honest ...
ReplyDelete"At every step, we were told our goals were misguided or too ambitious; that we would crush jobs and explode deficits. Instead, we’ve seen the fastest economic growth in over a decade, our deficits cut by two-thirds, a stock market that has doubled, and health care inflation at its lowest rate in fifty years."
ReplyDeleteSuck on that GOP!
I especially loved the, "That's good news people." jab and wink to the Republican side of Congress.
DeleteSWEET!
That poor refrigerator is gonna take it hard tonight. Sarah is pissing in her crusty pants.
DeleteThe President's wink was way better than Sarah's at her debate with Biden in '08 - hers was just creepy his was cute and appropriate.
DeleteI will VETO it! Catch Boehner's pained look? God the man looks like he's chewing nails or lots of Tums.
ReplyDeleteWonder how many shots (of booze) he had before he took his seat behind President Obama? He's such a jerk and so damned obvious in his reactions!
DeleteWhat the President said
ReplyDelete"We want everyone to share in the success"
What the GOP hears
SOCIALISM!!
Mildred
The President is speaking my language on childcare.
ReplyDeleteGo, go Obama!!
"Of course, nothing helps families make ends meet like higher wages. That’s why this Congress still needs to pass a law that makes sure a woman is paid the same as a man for doing the same work. Really. It’s 2015. It’s time."
ReplyDeleteRemind me, why can't we vote for him again?
I'm hoping he'll be announcing his bid for King of America in the next few minutes. :)
DeleteMildred
Here comes the free community college!
ReplyDeleteYES!!
DeleteMildred
Infrastructure!! Take that, Keystone!!
ReplyDeleteThere is no downside to what the President is saying.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap! The President is offering to cure cancer.
ReplyDeleteHow will the Republicans continue to hate him then?
They'll try to convince the public that cancer is good.
DeleteYou know they will.
Mildred
My sister just died from cancer last week - 67 years old and a true progressive. She would have loved this speech.
DeleteJJ
I'm so sorry JJ, my husband is ill as well.
DeletePeace to you.
Hugs to you JJ. It's a family trait for me too.
DeleteMildred
Recruit someoen to take her place at thepolls, JJ. Best memorial ever!
DeleteMark Kelly is going into space for a year?
ReplyDeleteWho's going to take care of Gabby?
Oh it's his brother Scott Kelly.
DeleteNever mind.
They both volunteered to do a twin study, Mark will be monitored here on earth for the year that Scott will be in space; it is a first, to help get baseline info about what really happens to humans in space, as they start prepping a Mars mission.
DeleteBoner looks like someone so sewed his lips shut
ReplyDeleteI was waiting to slide further down into his chair, what a putz. Had to laugh when he pulled out his lily white handkerchief and blew his nose.
DeleteYes, Yes, Yes! Just think what this president could do with a working congress!
ReplyDeleteBoehner is looking like he'd really, really like a shot right now.
ReplyDeleteLol!
DeleteSheesh
"I believe in a smarter kind of American leadership."
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, a thousand times yes.
This was one of the most outstanding lines. Exactly!!
DeleteTake that Putin!
ReplyDeleteAnd your conservatives fan-boys as well.
Did you see McCain's response? At first he started nodding then he realized where President Obama was going with it and his face wrinkled up like a little pissed off girl.
DeleteI saw that too. Wish the camera had been on McCain when President Obama gave them the zinger - 'yea, and I won both times!' Would have been priceless to see!
DeleteI hope somebody brings Boehner a vomit bag pretty soon
ReplyDeleteThe frowny face is so bad at this point it reminded me of the photo of Palin Gryp uses a lot! LMAO
DeleteOh, calling on Da Pope!
ReplyDelete"You know, I'm not a scientist either. But I know a lot of good scientists..."
ReplyDelete" Since I’ve been President, we’ve worked responsibly to cut the population of GTMO in half. Now it’s time to finish the job. And I will not relent in my determination to shut it down. It’s not who we are."
ReplyDeleteThe ball's in your court GOP.
Imagine what Cheney did when the President delivered that line? Will we see him on all the Sunday shows sneering and spitting nails?
DeleteGuantanamo...
ReplyDeleteCLIMATE CHANGE!!!
ReplyDeleteOh BOY, bring on the rebuttals, Joni, Rand, and $arah. I can't wait to see this......love you, my President.
ReplyDeleteHe just mentioned politics in the gutter....so, see, Sarah, he does think of you!
ReplyDeleteHa!
DeleteIt's time to close Gitmo!
ReplyDelete"I know cause I won both of' them."
ReplyDeleteNow that zinger drew blood.
I loved that!
DeleteBrilliant!
DeleteSheesh
My favorite line in the whole thing. Probably because it wasn't scripted but a perfect response to what was intended to be an insult.
DeleteThat man can think on his feet!
My favorite line also...it made me burst out laughing!
DeleteGod the Pres is killing me - with laughter - he's not pulling any punches. The jokes are eating a hole in Boehner's gut and I can't wait to hear the sputtering and denial that will be forthcoming soon.
ReplyDeleteBring on the rebuttals. Should be fun.
DeleteSheesh
He's on fire talking about his life, his experience as a president. WOW!
ReplyDeleteThe best President of my lifetime.
ReplyDeleteI agree!
DeleteMe,too. I'm 66, so I've seen many Presidents in my lifetime. Obama is the best. I just love him.
Deletesallyntx
Me too and I'm 72! We are so fortunate to have him leading our country. So wish he could run again because I know he'd win!
Delete"I have no more campaigns to run, I know. I won both of them." LOL HEART.
ReplyDeleteI've commented enough. I'm going to relax and listen again. In all my born days I've never seen a better President. Or a better leader. We need more like him.
ReplyDeleteHe still gives me hope for change.
Mildred
OMG! I LOVE THIS MAN!!!
ReplyDeleteDrop the mike.
ReplyDeleteOl' Joe looks like he's about to break into tears of pride.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling the Pres say's "Lame duck my black ass" and its payback time. LMAO. Standing ovation Mr. President.
ReplyDeleteIn classic President Obama style, humor and grace - "I know because I won both of them". In response to the baggers clapping when he said he had No more campaigning to do!! Take that you Fuckwads. And fuck you McCain
ReplyDeleteSo quick on his feet. Loved that moment!
DeleteThe best comeback EVER! Yea, President Obama!
DeleteWhoa! He is bringing it!
ReplyDeleteA true Statesman. Love this man
ReplyDeleteThe way that he is weaving this is absolutely stunning! He is in his passion mode when he is speaking truth to power. He is making it relateable.
ReplyDelete'I know 'cuz I won both of them...'! BAM!
This is an awesome fucking SOTU.
ReplyDeletePresident Obama's speech was an hour and I had no clue. He did a terrific job and had my attention the entire time even with watching Boehner's orange face off and on!
DeleteMSNBC was doing instant approval.polls the whole speech, and GOP and independents were agreeing with everything. A great speech!
ReplyDeleteAnd yet of you are watching MSNBC right now they are allowing Steve Schmidt to manuever the conversation toward ISIS which the average american doesn't give a shit about right now. This is why I have not watched MSNBC since the November elections and doesn't look like I'll be watching again!
DeleteRachel took Steve Schmidt out when he was spouting all that ISIS boo hoo hooy. Republicans = fear and the past Obama = hope and the future
DeleteRichard Engel was on NBC with Williams, from Istanbul, and he said ISIL is growing, moving, and replacing every man we kill will another. I love the President, but he was not honest about what is happening abroad.
DeleteObama
ReplyDeleteHe is the MAN
Yowza!
ReplyDeletehttps://pbs.twimg.com/media/B71zdPgCQAAZ4WG.png:large
Here comes Joni!
ReplyDeleteWait. She's NOT responding to the speech?
DeleteYou can't make me. LOL
DeleteThe breadbag saga. Tears are streaming down my face,
DeleteSheesh
Just like her Palin - I am not ging to respond to what I am supposed to respond to - I am going to speak on what I want. What???????????
DeleteWatched on PBS, the look on the journalist's faces afterwards was priceless, All they could remember was the bread bags!! Joni doesn't seem old enough to have grown up during the Great Depression!!
DeleteThat voice!! My dog was howling - it was hurting his ears. Well, add her to the long list of Republican rebuttal losers: Jindal, McDonnel, Rubio, Mitch Daniels, Bachman. lol Rachel mentioned all of them and then tried to keep a straight face.
DeleteJoni's response was a rehash of her election win speech, minus that horrible laugh, but with that same weird, constant smile. I groaned when she dragged out that bread bag story AGAIN. Not a rebuttal at all. Much more like a me, me, me--it's all about me campaign speech. Epic fail for the GOP, but that's fine with me. LOL.
DeleteOh god, Irnst. She's THANKING the POTUS for "sharing his views" ??!!
ReplyDeleteOh, the arrogance, the hubris. Oh, I need something to drink or smoke.
Iowans with bread bags on their feet.
ReplyDeleteI can see the cartoon now.
I think I see that coming as well!
DeleteSheesh
Complaining about her childhood, attacking Obamacare, not much pig meat here.
ReplyDeleteNow she is outright stealing from Obama's speech.
ReplyDeleteHow could she possibly respond to that speech?
ReplyDeleteShe could not and did not. Except I guess she wishes more of us didn't have health insurance. I will never get how having more uninsured is good for America.
DeleteEspecially from a woman who has Vet insurance AND now government insurance.
DeleteSounds like Joni embarrassed her party with her speech....low ratings actually showing on the TV screen....McConnell is probably wishing he'd not picked her!! Poor baby!
DeleteSo, if everyone else wears bread bags for protection in the rain, does that make it okay? Talk about justification for the rich getting richer...
ReplyDelete84% Republicans are disagreeing with Ernst in their poll whle she is speaking.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that too....
DeleteYes, Joni's "numbers" weren't good at all.
DeleteThose are 84% of Republicans WATCHING MSNBC, you know. Not ALL Republicans... ;-)
DeleteOoops, Joni didn't get the memo about quit talking about repealing the ACA.
ReplyDeleteIf she's the GOP response, the Tea Party's should be unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteI am waiting for her to say..live from new York!!!
ReplyDeleteDouble LOL!
DeleteSheesh
The SOTU was a combination of the concrete and the inspirational. Wonderfully crafted and delivered...one of his best speeches.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the stomach...or sense of humor...of many of you and am not watching pundit discussion of the speech or any of the GOP rebuttals. I just don't care what any of them think, except......
I'm anxiously awaiting a response from Bristol Palin and count on IM covering it.
Oh, I have MSNBC on with the sound muted and saw Joni Ernst registering a negative response from both Dems and GOP. I'll wait for Jon Stewart and IM for the blow-by-blow of that speech.
Loved President Obama's speech and thought Boehner his typical self/Republican! He clapped when it benefitted their party (veterans) and that was about all.
DeleteThink the disrespect shown our President by the Republican Party in the chamber was god awful! They should all be taken out to the barn and beat to bloody pulps - then they'd possibly learn what lack of respect really is!
There was a Republican that beat feet to get away from the POTUS when he was leaving and shaking hands. They had him on camera and it was a riot watching him. Think it was obvious to the President Obama too! Bet he'd love to deck some of those assholes!
Great speech. Great Man. looking forward to seeing him tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteJonie says you don't have to be rich and privileged to make a difference.
ReplyDeleteI think Obama has proven that, Jonie. What new answers to our country's problems do you have?

Obama Ad Libs Epic Burn Against GOP During State of the Union
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mediaite.com/tv/obama-ad-libs-epic-burn-against-gop-during-state-of-the-union/
I'm an Iowan born and bred and lived there for the first 40 years of my life. Now live in Ohio. I am embarrassed that my home state elected this nutcase. It's not the Iowa I grew up in.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up we sometimes put bread bags over our socks before putting our feet in snow boots. It had nothing to do with being poor (although we sorta were). It had to do with another layer of insulation - and waterproofing - in sub zero temps.
ReplyDeleteANd getting the galoshes off easily. Joni is a real Iowailidiot, ain't she?
DeleteWe did that too..and it kept the inside of the boots dry, which tended to smell long about February!
DeleteRandy Paul has to give his 2 cents of doom and gloom.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/01/20/rand-pauls-response-to-obamas-2015-state-of-the-union-address/
Ruh Roh, Hey sawah you are in big trouble. The Iowan castrator just stole your mojo. She's prettier, smarter, more eloquent , cleaner and she has your number. Aren't you glad you backed her election.
ReplyDeleteShe has the creepiest smile I've ever seen. Well, since Michele Bachman anyway.
DeleteJoni's wig looks cleaner than Sarah's.
DeleteDefinitely a cleaner wig, if not quite as artfully stuck on.
DeleteThat is one ugly wig actually. Kind of going gray, but not really. And so stiff.
DeleteI need to buy more bread.
ReplyDeleteJoni Ernst for 2020 President
ReplyDeleteBWAHAHAHAHAHA what a joke.
Deletetee hee hee,,,if you don't vote for her, she'll castrate or neuter you
DeleteSomeone said that only men castrate hogs, so she lied about that.
DeletePresident of what?
DeleteIf THAT is a lame duck president, then bring it on!
ReplyDeleteWas Joni using...dare I say it...the reviled teleprompter???
ReplyDeleteSheesh
Yes, and she obviously reads V_E_R_Y slowly. Does she have the same college 'degree' as Sarah?
DeleteGreat Speech, but I wish he had a more forceful ending.
ReplyDeleteLoved the rebuttal! What an idiot! Joni with the bread bags on her feet cuz her family was too cheap to buy boots, I was waiting for the part about having to walk 5 miles to school in the snow. She is giving Palin a run for her money with who can be the frontier woman. Next we will find out her parents are millionaires.
Joni also blew it with the New Republican Congress is going to get stuff done-no they will be fighting each other and it will be business as usual-nothing.
No new ideas as usual-repeal Obamacare-ain't gonna happen. Keystone- what a job maker-all 35 of them.
I don't think he needed a forceful ending at all.
DeleteHe was speaking his heart. Why he was elected. Twice!
The Republicans chose not to applaud or respond in any positive way (and Boehner kept his sphincter face pinched tightly) during the mention of:
ReplyDelete1. higher minimum wages for struggling families
2. equal pay for women
3. accessible childcare
4. greater access to higher education
5. making everyone pay their fair share of taxes
Noooo, the GOP isn't waging a war on the poor, middle class or women and legislating strictly for the benefit of the 1%!!! Really, really, they're NOT!!! Honest!
I'll bet they were plain white-bread bags.
ReplyDeleteGreat line from Think Progress comments:
ReplyDelete"thrown into a pack of wolves, only to respond by taking lead of the pack"
Just heard from my Senator Angus King. He would like to work together. Polls of Mainers reveal that we Mainers expect Congress to work with (not against) the President.
ReplyDeleteSen. King is a fine human being....smart, thoughtful, kind, and serving for the right reasons. I don't agree with all his political positions but would be proud to have him represent me.
DeleteToo bad the Democrats bailed on him during mid-terms. We might have seen some great changes for our country. Instead it will be business as usual for Republicans -block any of his polices and try to take credit for doing nothing
ReplyDeletePlease. When we HAD a majority, they blocked every damn thing anyway. I kind of like this...he can just veto the policies that will hurt the people and say why. The people are not dumb. AND we will be voting in 2016. Let the GOP sink themselves. They do not know how to govern, and have no inclination to learn, so they will talk themselves out of their jobs.

In the video, Cruz spoke for just under a minute before pausing to try again.

ReplyDeleteThe Most Ridiculous Republican Responses To The State Of The Union
Boy howdy I love my President. I would love to meet that man.
ReplyDelete"I Know 'Cause I Won Both of them"
ReplyDelete-President Barack Obama
Sarah "LOSER" Palin you skank, our president was talking to you
President Obama you da man
DeleteThat's what you call a bitch slap!
Sawaaaah the Republican Party SOTU response was given by "SENATOR " Joni Ernst,
ReplyDeleteSawaaaah will you be posting your response as soon as your ghost writer finishes it?
The speech was deivered with honesty, clarity, was encouraging, hopeful; how could anyone draw any negative from it?
ReplyDeleteThe Republicans clapping after POTUS mentioned his last term, was uncalled for and disrespectful. Has any other President giving the SOTU treated that way? Applauding at the mention of his last term?
Did you see Alaska's Senator Lisa Murkowski's mug at the SOTU? Her face looked like she was standing downwind of Sarah Palin and got a strong whiff of Palin’s unwashed ripe hoohah.
ReplyDeleteJoni Ernst begins with a Palin-ism. She tells her waiting audience that she's not going to discuss the SOTU, but wants to talk about her. Notice she went on about MeMeMe. Her hard times wearing bread bags for keeping rain out or for warmth. I heard people all over mention that's how they kept warm. They'd put plastic inside their boots to keep the dampness or snow or rain from leaking in.
ReplyDeleteWhat's so inspiring about her story? She wants to repeal O-Care. Her delivery was over-the-top phony. She sounded like (what I'd imagine Mr. Rogers' wife to sound like).

ReplyDeleteLet this be a warning to the slow to catch on Republicans. No more Mr Nice Guy. You play, you pay. President Obama will be respectful and open minded, but if you are disrespectful of the office and of his right to be there, he will put you in your place.
ReplyDeleteThis is how grown ups must treat children in order to help them take responsibility for their actions, so President Obama is right to let Republicans know that if they want to try to embarrass him publicly, he has no problem humiliating them with the facts.

It was good to see this president embrace some of his accomplishments on the biggest political stage of the year. The president took credit for the reduced dependence on foreign oil and noted end of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The president balanced optimism for the future with a clear message for Republicans that he will not step aside and let them dismantle everything that the country has achieved.
ReplyDeleteThis was a dominate performance by the president. He reminded Republicans that they were wrong about the economy, wrong about the minimum wage, wrong about climate change, and wrong in the love and admiration for Putin during his State Of The Union.
President Obama didn’t walk into a lion’s den tonight. He showed Republicans that he is their beastmaster. Barack Obama put congressional Republicans on notice that he is a force to reckoned with.
