TPM is pleased to announce the winners of the Eighth Annual Golden Dukes recognizing the year's best purveyors of public corruption, outlandish behavior, The Crazy and betrayals of the public trust. The awards are named in honor of former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, who epitomizes the iconic modern scandal.
Our celebrity judges -- Julieanne Smolinski, Dan Savage, Hendrik Hertzberg and Susie Bright -- waded their way through all 28 finalists in 7 categories, and selected the winners.
The category that the brawl won in was "Sex and Generalized Carnality" which I think is the perfect category.
The first judge, Julieanne Smolinski, made the wrong choice so we will skip her reasoning.
But here are the statements from the remaining judges who know a good scandal when they hear audio of one:
Dan Savage: The Palin Clan
Whenever the Palin kids make the news—teen pregnancies, on-and-off-again engagements, hate speech eruptions, drunken brawls, etc.—I like to pretend that the news is about the Obama girls and then imagine what the RWNJs on Twitter and Breitbart and Redstate would have to say about it. The Obama girls were slammed for failing to treat the annual pardoning of a Thanksgiving turkey with the solemnity it deserved. (Sorry, but looking bored and rolling your eyes are the only appropriate responses to this idiotic ritual—and this ritual isn’t just stupid, it’s soured by how few human beings President Obama has pardoned during his presidency.) So imagine the reaction if Sasha and Malia got involved in a drunken brawl at a party—with mom and dad there, screaming and yelling and throwing punches themselves. The commentary and handwringing would be loud and long—and the dog whistles would be loud enough to wake Lee Atwater.
Susie Bright: The Palin Clan
Despite the absence of bonafide insertion shots, the bodacious Palin borrachos nevertheless make every media occasion a dead ringer for early 90s VHS sequel porn. Suckers are played for Money Shots; we endure interminable boredom between blasts of sweat and hairspray. It's not their fault they're tan, photogenic, and prone to Zappa-esque "Valley Girl" loops of brio. They're just drawn that way.
Hendrik Hertzberg: The Palin Clan
The Palins. As Josh says, no sex—but plenty of flesh, much of it bruised and bleeding. It’s a whole country-music song cycle, with lyrics by the Anchorage police department and stunt work by the first family of political reality television. The violence is spectacular but family-oriented and resulting in no serious injury and probably not even much physical pain, given the analgesic properties of such prodigious quantities of booze. Sarah, her brawling brood, and their fellow revelers deserve special commendation for choosing, in this instance, not to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
"Plenty of flesh, much of it bruised and bleeding." The perfect description of the incident that marks the end of any political future for the Grizzled Mama despite what she might tell family members as she hires lawyers to help them keep their jobs.
And by the way for those who claim to be tired of the Palin family brawl story, tough shit.
This was and is a very important story that is still paying dividends, and which is going to figure prominently in some of the information from my source that I am going to be sharing in the near future.
If you think this story is over, then hold onto your seats kids because just like Jason in those "Friday the 13th" movies this thing will not stay dead.

Please know that the appropriate enforcement authorities have been notified. The location of the household falls under the jurisdiction of the Mat Su Animal Care and Regulation. Removing a service animal after a special needs child has established a relationship is a serious thing. I am hoping that Trig's best interests will be paramount.

DeleteAnon 1:16 Jill is not a service dog. She's still a puppy and was trained with basic commands prior to being given to the Palins. Service dog training can take years. Plus I doubt Trig is high enough functioning to handle a service dog. His energies should be put toward potty training and eating solid foods.

Your point? The child may have established a relationship with the dog, but if that relationship includes abuse of the dog (not the child's fault, of course) than the safety and well-being of the dog is paramount.
I think the Palins led everyone to believe Jill is a service dog, (Puppy Jake Foundation etc). It made her look like she was caring for her disabled "son".

I think this is very interesting because it is an Alaskan organization, the ASPCA and its chapters are widely respected, and they did not weasel around in this statement at all.
It wasn't a skittish, hands off, tiptoeing response along the lines of "It has been reported that a local family has treated a pet in what seems to be a somewhat irresponsible manner. While there are varying interpretations of appropriate ways of interacting with pets, it is to be hoped that the family in question reflects on the generous suggestions put forth by the public, blah blah blah...:"

DeleteNo at some point the abused animal has to be considered, even ahead of a child. Though I agree both should be removed from the home in question.
Service dog or not. If adults are teaching a child to abuse a dog, that is not a positive relationship for either one. It looks like they are teaching Trig that it is a lot of fun.
DeleteIt would be best the dog is removed from a place like that. But it doesn't do anything to help the abuse and neglect of Trig. If he loves the dog and has grown close to her, that is sad for him. Trig is not going to win or do well living with or being around abusive adults. He needs to also be removed from the Palin/Heath issues. Tripp Johnston is also in a situation that needs a lot of attention. He may be 6 or 7 and he has been trained the Palin way, if he can be removed from the abusive places he may still have a chance.

Haha, they might want to get their story straight with the Puppy Jake foundation, whose apologists are saying Jill WASN'T trained as a service animal because that takes 1.5-2 years. Everyone there knew it. And apparently she expected us all to believe that babies nurse every 30 minutes...for 25 minutes. Oh please. If you look at all three photos, he was being coached to climb on the dog..the dog's position is different in each one, meaning this was no 30 second "trig is so smart..look at that!" moment..this was another contrived Palin photo op gone wrong. She is such a moron.
DeleteThis person doesn't know a damned thing about kids with DS. They aren't incapable of problem solving, especially at Trig's age. The trick is to teach them appropriate problem solving skills that won't get them into trouble or hurt other people or things. I find it really sad that people are so impressed that a 6 year old kid with DS knows how to find a "step stool" to get something out of his reach.

This story is over no matter how many times some try to revive it... the stuff that comes from your source isn't going to go viral like the dog story either. The last post didn't, the future ones wont either. I suspect your source wont be taken seriously as anything more than hearsay. No Sarah will be her own undoing... What you have coming on Monday from the "source" will surely disappoint as much as their last "leak"... So needless to say I won't be holding my breath for something exciting... I'll just patiently wait for Sarah to drive the nail in her own coffin. As you said if your source is interested in a book deal they certainly wont be "leaking" very much to a blogger. I'm sure what they do say though will interest many of your followers.
