Ted Cruz is named Chair of the Subcommittee on Space, Science and Competitiveness. This can't be good.

"Guess who's in charge of that sciencey stuff bitchez?"
Courtesy of the Chicago Sun Times:

What’s the future of space and science funding in the United States?

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, will help shape it after being named the chair of the Subcommittee on Space, Science and Competitiveness, which oversees overall science and NASA funding.

And that may be bad news for NASA — and scientific research altogether — considering Cruz has previously tried to slash NASA funding, even though in 2013, he said “it’s critical that the United States ensure its continued leadership in space.”

Cruz also has some very specific views on climate change.

“Contrary to all the theories that — that they are expounding, there should have been warming over the last 15 years,” Cruz said, according to CNN. “It hasn’t happened.”

He’s also called climate change a “so-called scientific theory.”

“You always have to be worried about something that is considered a so-called scientific theory that fits every scenario,” Cruz once said, according to CNN. “Climate change, as they have defined it, can never be disproved, because whether it gets hotter or whether it gets colder, whatever happens, they’ll say, well, it’s changing, so it proves our theory.”

I hate everybody right now.

It's simple. On election day you simply get up out of your bed, drive to your local polling place, and VOTE TO KEEP THIS COUNTRY"S FUTURE OUT OF THE HANDS OF IDIOTS LIKE TED CRUZ!

I'm sorry for shouting. It's just so...so....so very disappointing.

We were planning to go to Mars. Now with Cruz in charge we will be lucky to progress past the 18th century.

I'm sorry (not really). Wasn't there a phrase everyone on here LOVED to repeat, just a little while ago? What was that...

      Hmmm...

      Oh, yes I remember...

"Elections have consequences". That's right. Are you still loving it? Just wondering. Dumass.

There also this from the same article:
"Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, who also has denied climate change is a real thing, will chair the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and the Coast Guard."

None of it really matters Daniel, because there is scientific evidence that the climate is changing, not necessarily warming, although some of the warmest years on the global record have been in the last decade, but suffice it to say, the climate is changing. CO2 levels are higher than they have been in 800,000 years. Whether this will lead to a "snowball earth" scenario or a warming trend remains to be seen, the next 10,000 years will tell the tale, and unfortunately none of us will be around to see the end of the show. For now though, it seems like the climate variances are tending towards colder and snowier events in the lower latitudes and tending towards warmer and drier weather in the higher latitudes, in both hemispheres. It's climate change for sure, but don't bet on it being anything that anyone expected.

Who are you? Where do you publish? You are an expert (climatologist) right? I would like to see your data and and how you arrived at your conclusions. Just drop a link here so we can all know you are not just blowing it out of your ass.

It would seem logical that with all the space & technology based in Texas that Cruz will be beholding to those folks who count on those jobs. Same for Rubio.

    1. Exactly. Republicans in Texas are always bragging about how Texas is A-#1 in creating jobs. I think the Johnson Space Center in Houston is about to become a ghost town.

Cruz has already tried to cut NASA funding (it's right there in the article) and Rubio doesn't (publicly, at least) care about those particular jobs. These guys care more about their image as anti-science spoilers and their anti-intellectual base than logic.

Maybe Cruz will surprise us. Space exploration is critically important to the Texas economy.

Related manufacturing is present in TX, as well.

I heard a discussion of Cruz' view of space exploration and he's at least saying he's committed to the U.S. taking the lead. I hope he was talking about NASA as a government agency and doesn't want to turn the agency over to private corporations. I also hopes he keeps his nose out of the climate change debate as we'll have enough of a problem dealing with Sen. Jim Inofe heading up the committee on the environment.

There's no woman that I can think of who'd ever vote for a sleazy, smarmy guy like Ted Cruz. Forget his politics; he looks like a villain in a bad B-movie. Four years of him and his Goldman, Sachs wife in the White House? I think not.

Okay Orlin, most intelligent people know that all branches of government are complicit in bailing out their rich friends, Obama included. How do you think these guys win elections, huh? We're not stupid, America is run by the 1% and the system is broken. "Too Big To Fail" unfortunately is the flavor of the day and all these guys are in bed with each other, regardless of which political party they ally with. When the candidate with the most BILLIONS is the one that wins tells me everything I need to know about this state of Government in America, it's broken and really always has been. Government has always been for the rich and by the rich. Duh!

I've never understood why we weren't drilled with the phrase "midterm elections are just as important as 4 yr elections."

Schools make such a big deal out of the big elections.

Also, We live in a country where the immorality of Saul Alinsky rules the media and is a bible for our current administration.

Therefore, good people will never run for office because the media is taught to attack, lie, and exaggerate until your fellow humans are ruined for no reason.

Earth to assholes, every single thing you've accused people of you commit yourself with hypocrisy. All haters do is trash and lie. Look at the lies in comments Gryphen allows to be printed. Look at lies he's written.

In the end, a random bloggers opinion doesn't change a person's truth. Saying someone doesn't work doesn't change the fact that they commute daily to work and work hard for a living.

Speaking of that, I just watched the Sacha Baron Cohen film "The Dictator" yesterday and he ends the movie with a very funny and moving underhanded swipe at American Exceptionalism:

"General Aladeen: Why are you guys so anti-dictators? Imagine if America was a dictatorship. You could let 1% of the people have all the nation's wealth. You could help your rich friends get richer by cutting their taxes. And bailing them out when they gamble and lose. You could ignore the needs of the poor for health care and education. Your media would appear free, but would secretly be controlled by one person and his family. You could wiretap phones. You could torture foreign prisoners. You could have rigged elections. You could lie about why you go to war. You could fill your prisons with one particular racial group, and no one would complain. You could use the media to scare the people into supporting policies that are against their interests."

To borrow from another movie I'll just say "America, Fuck Yeah"!
