Jon Stewart addresses the Brian Williams controversy and went after the media for their hypocrisy in calling for accountability here but not holding themselves accountable for publishing lies in the run up to the Iraq War.

"Never again will Brian Williams mislead this great nation about being shot at in a war that he probably would not have ended up in if the media had applied this level of scrutiny to the actual fucking war."

Stewart then shows a number of correspondence from across cable news going after Williams and discussing his lack of credibility in the face of this story. And then flips the script and talks about how the media allowed the Bush administration to lie to the American people on a daily basis in the runup to the Iraq War.

"So I love that now the media pretends that they must guard the crown jewel of their credibility when we've already seen it's Al Capone's vault."

Stewart then plays incredibly embarrassing footage of various news types making excuses for why they did not do their job when it really mattered. When the country was about to go to war based on lies.

"But maybe this incident will cause reflection on your part. You’ll go back now and look at other instances of media maleficence that lead our country to the most catastrophic foreign policy decision in decades.”

Of course that won't happen so instead the Daily Show plays footage of talking heads discussing further investigations into past reporting done by Brian Williams.

Because you know that will help them redeem their credibility.

Maybe Stewart should get a bit more current. Williams and the MSM continue to this day to lie about White House lies about Syria, Ukraine and Russia.

      @9:19 AM,

Oh, really? What "White House lies" about Syria, Ukraine, and Russia are you talking about?

I'll shut up as soon as you prove that those are lies.
      Good luck.

Do you know what controlled demolition looks like? Well Peter Jennings did and he said so on that fateful day. Tim Russert looked Cheney right in the eye and practically called him a liar. Why do you think Bush and Cheney made such an effort to make sure they'd win er, ah, steal that 2000 election. So, if it makes you feel better to deny this all... have fun with that. The powers need useful idiots like Brian Williams, they are a dollar a dozen.

One of the biggest media culprits in the New York Times. Front page headlines for days and op-ed outrage about Brian Williams, but not a word about the paper's collusion with the Bush Administration in the lead-up to George's War in Iraq.

Yes, let's just ignore the present. Let's not face the fact that the NYT & WP along with the rest of the MSM is in collusion with the Obama administration lying about Syria, Ukraine & Russia.
Let's ignore the fact that the Peace Prize president is seeking more power to wage war globally.
Yes, Bush started it, but Obama is doing nothing to end it, instead seeks to expand it, globally.

      10:37 AM,

What fucking "lies" about Syria, Ukraine, and Russia are you whining about? If you're going to come here talking about "lies" you better fucking prove it, you lying piece of shit!

You still can't stand that a black man won a Nobel Peace Prize! Get over it! Henry Kissinger won a Nobel Peace Prize, and he was fucking war-monger! You need to take your stupid ass over to Wikipedia, and look up the list of Nobel Peace Prize winners! The Nobel Peace Prize isn't an award only given to people who make "peace" in the world, you ignorant ass!

Get the fuck out of here with tripe!

I voted for Obama twice, but seriously, the last thing he deserved was the Nobel Peace Prize. What part of "peace" doesn't he get? We're still droning the shit out of the middle east and there are still unlawfully held prisoners at Gitmo and abroad at our European military bases. He's done a lot of good, especially for the economy, but damn, he's not exactly a paragon of peace.

I think the faux outrage over Brian Williams may be about Hillary Clinton. If Williams is forced out of his job, it gives the GOP a new anti-Hillary talking point -- a new slant to question whether her 'under fire' story discredits her fitness for the presidency.

wait a minute, didn't the pilot in Williams' plane substantiate a portion if his story?

much ado about nothing, as usual.

puppies?? this is devolving into the theatre of the absurd. some pointless local reporter hoping to break onto the national stage.

Williams was in the Chinook behind the one that was badly damaged in the attack. The one he was in was hit as well but remained able to fly, according to the pilot who was at the controls.

Frankly I would have been terrified just being in a military helicopter that might be in a situation like that. It was wrong of Williams to exaggerate his experience and not correct himself right away but, let's face it, there have been far worse claims made by media people and media lies that helped George W. invade Iraq.

I've always liked Brian Williams and I'm not just going to drop him like a Hot Potato now, but neither am I going to defend what he has done if I find it indefensible ... as soon as I can figure out through all the noise exactly what it is he 'has done'.

He certainly did get something he told wrong - but it's not clear how much, or when and most importantly why. There's a huge difference to me between someone who has done so much stuff they conflate incidents versus someone who is deliberately lying to promote an agenda. Brian Williams is not the head of NBC. Despite his seniority in the news department, he is not the Power Broker at the network.

For all those who are still bemoaning the state of American journalism, that it's too much entertainment, well, where have you been? This is nothing new. It's been going on since at least the 1970s. Please read the book "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Dr. Neil Postman. It's a good read. Not too long, not too scholarly but competently referenced.

I guess what really frosts my Wheaties is Fox "journalists" railing against Brian Williams for what they do every day, although they, if/when caught, will say "but I was just reading what they wrote for me, not my fault it wasn't true, so I'm not a liar like that BW".

Anyone know the name of a Fox News journalist who has been in Iraq or other war zones for any length of time, has made any 'under fire stories'? Have those all been scrutinized?

If this one thing undermines Williams' credibility, we really can't believe anything anyone on TV says, can we (but that's probably exactly what the Koch Brothers want).

I'm not normally a conspiracy-theory nut, but when the Dan Rather thing came out - of nowhere - I went "Wha-aa?" and then when this hit, I did same. I think they were both targeted, watched, for a long, long time.

And since no one is perfect, it would only be a matter of time before someone could find something to [legitimately] criticize them about.

I only hope the same scrutiny is applied to the people who are doing this.

Oh, and we apply the same scrutiny to Dick Cheney.

Any embellishment of events with which he was involved in no way changed the facts of the event on which he was reporting. He pumped himself up a little. It in no real way affects his credibility as a news reporter.

  9. I have been watching Brian for years. I try to never miss a broadcast. I like his newscast because there is no eye rolling, wink n nod, smirks or voice inflections when delivering the news. Also, the news is presented as news...not entertainment.

There are stories I have told that my husband will dispute my memories....but Brian did not have someone fact check his story and that was his error.

I look forward to seeing him again on the nightly news and I am certain I am not alone.
