Ending one of the most venerable and trusted careers in making a complete mockery of the news, Jon Stewart has announced that he is stepping down as host of The Daily Show. According to sources who were there (some of whom are already passing word along on social media), Stewart let the news slip at the taping of today’s episode, telling those in the audience that he’s retiring. No word yet on when exactly he’s leaving, whether this means he’s ending his time in the anchor chair to focus on being a Serious Movie Director now, or just how much this is Brian Williams’ fault. Presumably all of this information will be revealed in time—and delivered by Stewart himself tonight on your television. We’ll update when we have more.
After this article was written Comedy Center confirmed the news on Twitter:
Thank you Jon. pic.twitter.com/yPdxjnkuLw

There is really no way to convey what a profound loss this is to those of us who have relied on Jon Stewart and the Daily Show to find humor in the most terrible of circumstances, hope when everything seemed hopeless, and sanity when it felt like we were all trapped in the bowels of a madhouse. As a reminder of this man's genius here is Jon Stewart's first show after 9-11.
THAT was what finally pulled me out of my funk. For that alone I owe Mr. Stewart more than I could ever repay.
Update: I don't actually think this is related, but today Brian Williams was put on unpaid suspension for six months.
He's only 52 and he has enough money to just live his life and enjoy his young children and just have fun! We will all miss him, but damn, he's put in his time and deserves to retire and enjoy life.
ReplyDeleteThat's how I feel. I'm smiling for him through my tears, because he is such a talented, hard-working man and will be very tough to replace, but I wish him well in whatever he chooses to do after this..
DeleteI don't think this is the last we will see of Jon. He is too talented to not have an outlet.
ReplyDeletehopefully agreeing with you.
DeleteFirst Stephen, now Jon. I wish he would have hung on through '16 but sure the RWNJs are jumping up and down.
ReplyDeleteHi, $arah....now you can REALLY run! I dare ya!
Smooches.
I love Mr. Stewart so much and I hate to see him go. He has made me think, laugh, and cry so many times.
ReplyDeleteMe too, Beth, between Stephen and him, they truly spoke for me.
DeleteAccording to the reliable folks at c4p, Jon will take over for Brian. They never get ANYTHING wrong...
ReplyDeletebwahahahahaha
DeleteHahaha!
DeleteOne of "us" started that rumor with a comment at not-so-Bright-phart today. That didn't take long!
It never does, 6:41 PM! They are so stupid over there. They went batshit crazy (sorry, Mildred) that vg heard from creepy Chuck Jr and sent a pic of Sally with his new daughter reading c4p. "They see everything we say!"
DeleteAgain....Run, $arah, I DARE you!
The joke really goes the other way around. The guy who comes after Larry Wilmore said that with Jon leaving, there is only one logical person who can read the fake news on the Comedy Channel, Brian Williams.
DeletePeople who like Brian think that 6 months without pay is a harsh punishment. The C4Pers think that it is just a slap on the wrist. They are rejoicing that all of the Palin haters are going. Not so fast. Bill Maher is still around, and he really did a number on Sarah last week.
Jon has been at the Daily Show a LONG time. I'm not surprised he wants to leave to do other stuff.
ReplyDeleteFirst we lost Keith Olberman. Then Stephen Colbert. This is too much.
ReplyDeleteColbert was offered the Late Show when Letterman leaves later this year. Keith was torn between sports and news. I think that he likes reporting on sports better. He hated being dragged in to report on all-Monica all the time back during Clinton's time. Olbermann also made a political contribution which was not allowed for the MSNBC people reporting the news.
DeleteWe lost Martin Bashir...also, too.
DeleteI'm afraid that Brian Williams will end up being the sacrificial lamb, just like Dan Rather was when he called Dubya's National Guard service into question. The U.S. media is so lazy; these are the same people who gave the simple village idiot a free pass and never vetted her. Why didn't they call her out for her embellishments and lack of credibility? Why was her background never closely scrutinized? Who all conspired to enable her false persona? Fuckin' corporate hacks!
ReplyDeleteFloyd Orr wrote a book in 2011 called "Paradigm Shift: The Palin Matrix." It's called the Southern Strategy and well worth your time to read.
DeleteWell, I'd like to think that he will be setting up some sort of news program covering national political races, or hosting one of the Sunday morning gasbag shows with a contract to run the show as he sees fit, but I suspect he will go for Serious Movie Director.
ReplyDeleteI hope there is somebody out there that will take up skewering the media when they fail at being the media, as well as idiots in public life doing stupid things.
See What Jon Stewart Had to Say About His First Daily Show Episode
ReplyDeletehttp://time.com/3704378/jon-stewart-daily-show-1999/
Gee they give Brian sometime off. With all of the whore's lying, give us relief don't even cover the pos. Awww Jon gonna miss your grin.
ReplyDeleteWhen will 'they' start suspending the staff at Fox 'News". All they do is lie and misinform.
ReplyDeleteI am just too depressed to really digest this.....losing Colbert was hard enough, but Jon? I was lucky enough when I lived in Jersey and had a high school daughter that forced me to go see the live show 4 times!!!! I swear we sat on the sidewalk for 5 hours to get in, but along the way got the autographs from both Steven & Stephen plus Lewis Black. He comes out before the show to ask a few audience questions and I managed to get his attention twice. I have 2 autographed blue sheets that my daughter proudly hangs framed 10 years later. The man has the sharpest wit on TV....his interviews are always the best and you know any serious politician never skips his show. His incredible wide range of knowledge and razor sharp humor will never be replaced. Watching Lawrence tonight it reminded me how, like Lorne Michaels & SNL they encouraged the careers of soooooo many great people and they all come back and sing the praises of the most generous mentors around. Jon has paid his dues and I am sure he will go on to new challenges, but how will we get thru the 2016 elections without him? I am already going thru withdrawal from Stephen...sigh. Looks like Bill Mahr is it for calling out the bullshit in politics.
ReplyDeleteI was in his audience one time with my daughter and I got to ask him a question before the show! Then he started the show making cryptic (to the home viewers) comments about what we had discussed! We will miss him so much--who can fill his shoes?
DeleteI forgot about the elections.
DeleteOh NO. What am I going to do now without both Stewart and Colbert?
Brian's bragging was to make himself look more heroic. Fox News lies spread wrong information about President Obama and our government. How about the lies that Cheney and his gang told, using the NY Times to plant a story about Iraq having WMD, when it was just meant to lie us into a costly war.
ReplyDeleteI will miss Jon so much! I can't wait to hear what he's going to do next, why he left & who is going to take his place. The show is not over..let's look forward! :)
ReplyDeleteJon Stewart has been the best voice for news in this country in many, many years. He has always told "it like it is" unlike the mainstream media. I am heartbroken right now.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
Am I the only one who think Stewart might be gearing up for a political run? Did anyone watch MSNBC last night? Both Maddow and O'Donnell ran the same clip of a political speech Stewart gave at the rally with Colbert.
ReplyDeleteMy prediction? Warren/Stewart 2016
No way. Stewart won't go near politics on any level.
Delete...And cue $arah's Facebook poutrage that the lamestream media isn't calling Jon a "quitter" like they called HER...
ReplyDeleteWe are getting slaughtered on the left...Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Martin Bashir, Keith Olbermann... the voices are getting quieter and the right wing voices just keep ramping up. This is not a good thing at all.

Here’s Why Jon Stewart Quitting ‘The Daily Show’ is So Painful for Democrats
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2015-02-11/here-s-why-jon-stewart-quitting-the-daily-show-is-so-painful-for-democrats
OMG. What am I going to do? I rely on Jon for the news, the truth and what to be on the lookout for regarding politics.
ReplyDeleteNo one can replace Jon.
With Colbert gone to The Late Show he won't be able to do politics either.
That leaves me with John Oliver. I don't get HBO or Showtime.
What am I going to do?
ACK!
B.E.T.
