James Carville apologizes for calling Grover Norquist "pond scum." Well kinda.

So a couple of days ago James Carville wrote a letter to the editor of The Daily Reveille, the Louisiana State university's student newspaper.

Here is what he wrote:

The news from the Governor’s office and the State Legislature has attained a level of buffoonery and comedy before unseen; in a state with a long history of both. Our beloved university is being systematically dismantled and as a result of our Governor and a significant portion of our Legislature (twenty-six) pledging allegiance to a Washington lobbyist with the long history of shady dealings. Your future earnings and the quality of your education is being adversely affected by the fact that a pledge was signed to a Washington operator by the name of Grover Norquist that under no conditions could taxes be raised.

Three things you need to know about Grover Norquist:

1-The anti-tax fanatic founded Americans for Tax Reform in 1985 and his shady dealings was linked by a congressional committee to Jack Abramoff.

2-Norquist was described by fellow conservative, Tucker Carlson, as a, “cash-addled, morally malleable lobbyist.” Norquist is the human equivalent of pond scum. He was a fellow traveler of pond scumite Abramoff and according to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, Norquist’s organization served as a “conduit” for funds from Abramoff’s clients and conservative lobbying campaigns.

 3. Our elected officials have allowed him to become the most powerful person in our state. Proposed legislation is routinely sent to him by the Governor to seek his approval. Trust me its true.

Now for the comedy part, the Governor and Legislature constantly refer to how can they maintain their purity, or as it is sometimes referred to, their “tax virginity.” You have to be kidding me. This reminds me of two over-sexed teenagers dry humping in a backseat of car parked behind a levee wondering how far they can go while maintaining their purity or virginity. We are literally at the mercy of buffoons and comedians. While they’re humping, our university burns. Our only recourse is to stand up and fight for ourselves. Geaux Tigers.

Apparently after writing that Carville received quite a lot of blowback from outraged conservatives over the fact that he called Grover Norquist "pond scum."

This was his response:

"Since the publication of my Letter to the Editor yesterday, I have received a considerable amount of comments on my comparison of Grover Norquist to pond scum. As someone who has spent so much time in the public square, I understand how words and characterizations can be hurtful and unfair to those involved in the comparisons. After prayer and deep reflection and consultation with my spiritual and ethical mentors I am forced to take a step I rarely approach in my public life and that is to apologize to- pond scum."

I am not always in agreement with Carville, but considering the damage that Norquist has done to this country due to his ridiculous "no raising taxes" pledge,  I agree that pond scum should be angered at the comparison.

    Go, James, go!!

And now Glenn Beck is calling out Norquist as Muslim mole and taking on the NRA for having Norquist on its board of directors.

I did that, well it was three weeks, but I was 28 had a full time, great paying job, he was active military and 32. I would not advise my daughter to do the same thing until she was at least as old as me. Bristol is way too young and ill raised to get engaged so fast. Hell she can't even hold down a real job (just like dear mummy).

  8. Good for Carville. I have always been appalled that elected officials could so routinely and obscenely get away with violating their oath of office to uphold the constitution and serve their constituents, by pledging fealty to one man, Norquist, above all else..

The fact that there is corruption here and there in our government is depressing. The fact that there is so much of it, so widespread throughout this country among our elected officials totally distresses me.

And the fact that a private citizen, a college professor, is who has thrown off the covers to call them out is sad, especially since this will be old news tomorrow. Where are the checks and balances? The media? The investigative journalists? Or even other members of the government? Who will fight for us when all factions are dedicated to covering for each other's lapses in honesty and morals?

You go for it, James, I hope others who feel the same are sick and tired of being nothing more than paparazzi and do the job they are trained and paid for.

"Where are the checks and balances? The media? The investigative journalists? "

They're all working for media outlets that have been swallowed up by the corporations. Those same corporations own the Republican party, most of Congress, and far too many of our state governments.

Our Founding Fathers, who the right wing claims to idolize, would be horrified at what has happened to our American 'free press' in the past several decades.

Objective journalism on a large and public scale (aka mainstream media) has been bought and paid for by the corporations. The only sources of true objective investigative journalism these days are online, which is one reason that the GOP was so adamant about destroying net neutrality. If they can manage to gain control over the online media, we are all screwed. It will be like the countries who have repressive, state-controlled media, except it will be controlled by the Kochs and the Waltons instead.

Exactly, and of course that too was dishonestly laid out as "the govt conspiring to get info on you".

Sadly, there are too many ignorant folks who believe everything they say without researching.

Many a Republican has given over their power to Norquist. So when they voted for Little Bobby Jindal in Louisiana, they were really voting for Norquist.

When Little Bobby took over as Governor, the State had a billion dollar surplus. Under his management, he gave tax credits for movies and tax cuts for the rich, and now the State now has a billion dollar deficit.

Now LIttle Bobby says he cannot raise taxes because he pledged to Norquist that he would not. I guess his pledge to the good folks in Louisiana means nothing to him.

So Bobby is now proposing that the State gut the educational system. And you will notice that many Republicans are targeting education in their budgets. That way they can count on the uneducated to vote for them again and again.

Actually, LIttle Bobby's real name is Piyush Jindall and he gave himself the name Bobby after Bobby Brady from the Brady Bunch. He is also one of those anchor babies he hates so much as Bobby's mom was four months pregnant with him when his parents immigrated from India. So, he might have been born in the USA, but little Bobby was actually made in India.

Yes, we Democrats could use a little more snark a la James Carville. It is long past time to stand up and start fighting.

I have always wondered about the spell Grover Norquist has over GOP politicians. They keep the oaths they sign to him and then ignore the oath they take to uphold the Constitution. A person cannot have two masters; it seems the GOP has chosen Norquist and not their country. Carville was right to call him "pond scum." And there was no need to apologize for speaking the truth.

    2. I think James Carville deftly sidestepped an apology to Grover Norquist by making the apology to Pond Scum :) This made my day!

Norquist...smarmy, smug, weasely, gutter trawler. Jerk wad who want to rename everything ' Ronald Reagan.' United States of Ronald Reagan. He's a creep who more than likely sleeps with a life-sized blow up doll of Reagan. I wouldn't doubt it for a second.

Grover Norquist wrote that pledge when he was in the 6th grade. He was 12 years old. He has never held elected office. He holds sway not only over Louisiana, but Congress as well having many representatives and senators who have signed that stupid pledge as well. I have never understood how he has gained so much power over these people, why they are so willing to bow down to someone who has never been elected to anything who still functions through the understanding of a 12 year old child.

Every once in awhile, Carville hits one out of the ballpark, and this is one of his best. What I can't figure out for the life of me is what was he thinking when he married Matalin?
