RadarOnline.com can reveal that the heroic former Marine and 2009 Medal of Honor recipient has detailed his battle with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, and all it’s complications.
Meyer revealed his PTSD and depression worsened after he returned from battle and began thinking about his fellow soldiers who had lost their lives in Afghanistan.
“I would question things. It was a lack of confidence,” he said during one interview with Fox News. “I was second-guessing myself, thinking ‘I’m just not normal,’ and I’m trying to figure thing out. I’m trying to make reason of what happened and how to go on from this point forward.”
He grew so despondent that he nearly committed suicide.
“I was going down the road, and I was tired of being a burden on my family,” he said in 2012. “I was just tired of it all, and it just seemed like the easy way out. I pulled over to the side of the road and I pulled one of my guns out. I just put it to my head and squeezed the trigger. How there wasn’t a round there, I don’t know.”
So according to Meyer he not only thought about committing suicide, he actually attempted it, and would have succeeded if the gun had been loaded.
I can tell you as somebody who has counseled people considering suicide that this is usually when somebody is hospitalized or enters long term therapy.
It is also an indication that this person might make a similar choice in the future, if they get depressed again. And let's face it, we know that's coming.
Meyer also claims that he doesn't buy that PTSD is a valid defense against murder. His exact words were:
“PTSD does not put you in the mind set to go out and kill innocent people,” continued Meyer, noting his own experiences with the disorder. “The media label this shooting PTSD, but if what that man did is PTSD, then I don’t have it.”
Well he is wrong there. People with PTSD have definitely acted out in violence against others, more often than not a loved one. Besides I think Meyer is failing to recognize that wanting to kill yourself is just on the other side of the coin from wanting to kill others.
Personally I can tell you that if I had a patient with PTSD, and a history of suicidal tendencies, I would strongly suggest that they remove all of their guns from the home and avoid drinking more than a beer or two a night. Forever.
I have to say that as much as dislike Bristol, I certainly do not want her to become just another statistic. However to be honest, it is really Tripp that I am the most concerned about right now.

And Bristol is hardly capable of giving attention to a needy PTSD vet. She can hardly take care of Tripp. She writes on her Instagram photo that Tripp is spoiled rotten. Who spoiled him, Bristol? It' is her neglect that makes him act out. Good luck with adding another needy member to that mixed up family, especially a guy who leaves a gun on the table because that's the way he rolls. DeleteIt only works that way if that's the custody/visitation arrangement. Levi would have to agree to it (or a judge would have to say it was best for the child). I thought at this point Levi had shared physical custody, not just visitation. He should not settle for summers and the occasional holiday, especially considering it's BRISTOL, who has shown herself to be a poor decision maker when it comes to their son (and other things).
When you have a child with someone and split up, you do what's best for the kid and, whenever possible, that means as much time as possible spent with each parent. You're not free to pick up and move whenever and where ever you want.

ReplyDeleteI grew up with a PTSD dad (WWII). There is a wide range of symptoms for PTSD. Meyers may or may not handle it well throughout his life. It will be a long hard road with lots of mistakes. I wish him luck.
ReplyDeleteThe Veterans Administrations attitude toward my father's PTSD (after ignoring it for 40 years) was pretty much isolated to my dad. The impact on his wife and children was simply none of the VA's concern. PTSD is a multi-generational problem.

DeleteIf Track is a PTSD counselor then Bristol has an MD in dermatology and Sarah has a PhD in Journalism, Communications, and Political Science. Dakota does not seem to have had any treatment for his PTSD. He is also supposed to have suffered a traumatic brain injury and he refused physical therapy for that, too. Many people have told Dakota to get an education, and it doesn't appear that he has followed that advice any more than Sarah, Bristol or any of them have.

Anon 6:14, there was another part of Bristol's pregnancy that was disturbing. Sarah wanted to adopt Bristol's baby to avoid a scandal. Imagine having to see your mother parade your baby around and you can't tell anybody that he's your son, not Sarah's baby.

ReplyDeleteGryphen, you are WAY out of line for even expressing your opinion on this very private matter between two plucky young people who just want to be left alone to live vibrant libes together out of the spotlight and glare of the media, also too., Clearly, this is a situation that cries out for a 12 episode reality TV series during which special challenges, surprise guests, nightvision nookie cams and exciting cliffhangers will help the loving couple decide their fate. And I just pray to Jeebus that the show will put the decision in God's hands and let the viewers vote, possibly thru a special smartphone app, but I'm jus' spitballln' here.

Sarah has always orchestrated Bristol's life...remember the fake gang rape threats that Sarah NEVER reported to her staff or the police? Remember when Bristol was taken out of high school and sent to live with her aunt in another city for several months because she had "mono"? Remember the car they bought her to break it off with Levi? Remember when Bristol said to Greta "Abstinence is unrealistic" and then Sarah barged in on the interview? DeleteI believe this shotgun engagement & ensuing wedding bodes bad juju. Even though Bristol & Dakota may love each other (for now) this is just too contrived. Match up volatile beer swigging sailor-swearing Bristol with the once suicidal and PTSD sufferer Dakota Meyer..did he ever get treatment or is he just on a talk circuit high like Sarah? All 3 of them just love crosshairs...drawing pictures of people they hate..shooting at Tripp's father's image on a reality tv show. I just wonder who is going to get caught in the crosshairs next. I hope when it happens that Tripp is not a witness..he's already been through enough as he can be heard on police audio crying at the family brawl. This show isn't over yet and I just have a feeling it's not going to end up good.

Gryphen, Just a heads up.....Please use the phrase "died by suicide" or "took his own life". Committed suicide has the feeling of committing a crime. If you need more info please look up the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention(AFSP). Our son took his own life and it really does feel less negative to loved ones to say died by....there is enough stigma and blame for the ones that are left behind. Thanks

DeleteWe had a young man (non military) who took his own life. Had he seen the people who showed up at his funeral and knew how much he was loved, this kind soul who wouldn't hurt a fly may have thought twice, but the thing is, he wasn't in his right mind, something that could happen to anyone of us, anyway, I understand Bristol's wanting to get married in the worst way, but I doubt she knows half of what she's buying into. She has a choice, Tripp doesn't. That photo of a gun on a nightstand and him with a baby in his arms shocks the soul.
ReplyDeleteI've volunteered at the VA hospital, the rooms are set up with all the furniture against the wall and the closets wide open. A person with PTSD may feel someone's waiting to ambush them etc etc.... what helps is to let them talk, listen attentively and bring up any questions to the pros. All joking aside, Bristol's past behavior is a pretty good monitor of future behavior and I doubt she has the skills to cope. And Tripp doesn't deserve any of that.
