Cuban leader Raul Castro calls President Obama "an honest man" and absolves him of any blame for US blockade.

President Obama shakes hand of Cuban leader Raul Castro.
Courtesy of HuffPo:

President Barack Obama on Saturday declared his refusal to refight the Cold War battles while Cuban President Raul Castro rallied to his defense, absolving Obama of fault for the U.S. blockade in a stunning reversal of more than 50 years of animosity between the United States and Cuba.

"In my opinion, President Obama is an honest man," Castro said - a remarkable vote of confidence from the Cuban leader, who praised Obama's life and his "humble background."

Turning the page on the longstanding U.S. policy of isolation, Castro and Obama were expected to meet later Saturday on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas - the first substantial meeting between a U.S. and Cuban president in more than five decades.

The flurry of diplomacy, which kicked off Friday evening with an historic handshake between Obama and Castro, was aimed at injecting fresh momentum into their months-old plan to restore normal relations between their countries.

"The Cold War has been over for a long time," Obama said. "And I'm not interested in having battles frankly that started before I was born."

This must be making Marco Rubio's freaking head explode.

Not to mention the other Republicans who absolutely need to have some enemy to rail against while they campaign.

If Obama manages to get a good nuclear deal with Iran as well I think the Republicans might start jumping off of tall buildings in frustration.

Which is by the way yet another reason to support the President's efforts.

Reagan is credited for single handedly tearing down the Berlin wall (snort), and republicans praise him for it. President Obama will be vilified for his efforts to normalize relations with Cuba.

...But then President Obama will be vilified by Republicans for EVERYTHINGS he does. Or doesn't do.

The Republicans have devolved into the party of mindless frothing derision.

And here are a couple articles relating to that, as to why the odds against Hillary Clinton becoming president are longer and longer.

      Nice try, @11:59 PM.

All the anti-Clinton articles are only hypothetical-wishful thinking. Charlie Cook said nobody really knows who the hell is going to win the 2016 presidential election. The election is 19 months away.

These articles are from the people who already hate Hillary Clinton, and are working hard to undermine her. All I ever hear from these types of activists are reasons why Hillary Clinton can't get elected president, yet I never hear why they think their heroes Bernie Sanders, or Elizabeth Warren would do better.

If President Obama's job approval rating keeps improving (the latest NBC poll has him at 51%, and the other day Gallup had him at 50%), the odds of Hillary Clinton becoming president, get better, and better. Sucks for you!

Hey, I'd thoroughly enjoy watching Republicans from the U.S. Congress jump off buildings in D.C.! The majority of them will end up in Hell due to their evil, racists, divisional, bullshit ways of the past years.

And, thank you President Obama for changing the ways of the USA throughout our country and world. The Cuba change is one especially kind action for all concerned! This POTUS will go down in history as one of our best!!!

We could begin with McCain, McConnell and Boehner!

If the three stooges McCain, McConnell and Boehner want to jump off a building I would be happy to give them a push. Make it a really high building, so there will be no recoveries. We could tell $carah it is for a reality show, and she would join them in a heartbeat!

The Chinese are spreading their influence everywhere they can, and have used billions of dollars in Caribbean nations, in loans or construction, to gain their loyalty.
The United States must guard itself, and joining with Cuba to, ironically, stop the Chinese menace will be one of President Obama's signature achievements.

The electorate showed good judgement electing Obama not once but twice. A real thinking man unlike sons of privilege like Bush. What Obama is doing with Cuba andIran is real leadership that not only brings respect back to America but sets a good precedent for future Presidents. He could do this in big part due to his unique upbringing. Great man.

THIS is what leadership looks like. Uniting people. Effecting positive change. All conservatives know how to do is murder and bluster and fear monger and pretend that's "leadership".

The Republicans should do the world a favor and just bomb themselves next time.

The Cubans in Miami are losing their freaking minds over this. Their reaction puzzled me until I figured this out: who fled Cuba in the 1950s? The 1%, the people just rolling in money. That's why they're so entitled and arrogant.

Anon@ 5:01 : Exactly! For anyone who doubts your statement, buy T. J. English's "Havana Nocturne: How the Mob owned Cuba and Then Lost It to the Revolution". It is a factual, well researched book and a very interesting read. The old guard in Miami are to this day enamored of the lush life they lived under Fulgencio Batista. They yearn back to the days of Nixon and Bebe Rebozo and other mobsters' relationships. Oh, just read and it all becomes quite clear.

Gryphen, I've written a lively comment about President Obama's diplomatic actions with regards to Cuba and I'm just waiting for approval from the Cuban refiugee community in Miami to sign off on it. I THINK they will like what I have to say, but it's always best to get their permission first before going public. Avoids a lot of Ricky Ricardo-style temper tantrums, if you get my drift. Please hold off of any more posts about American Cuban foreign policy until that approval comes in.

    Muchas gracias, hermano!

I love everything about this historic event, especially the timing, as Gryph mentions. The timing of this meeting has got to have Rubio and others scrambling their writers to point out how evil it is to deal with the enemy. Diplomacy works much better than, say, some random airhead posting gun sites on candidates on their facebook page. What will the GOP do if we're not at war with someone, anyone? What's best is that President Obama and other world leaders are being an excellent example to the next generation. Gee, have they ever found those mobile missile trucks that we spent money, lives and blood for eight years fighting those pesky evildoers?
