Courtesy of TMZ:
Memories Pizza -- the first Indiana business to declare it would refuse LGBT business -- got blasted on the Internet and by phone, but the owner says there's been a huge misunderstanding ... sorta.
Kevin O’Connor tells TMZ he's had to temporarily close his business after he told a reporter he would refuse to cater a gay wedding under Indiana's new Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
O'Connor says he was immediately flooded by threatening phone calls, and social media postings.
O'Connor wants to clear up one thing: He says he would never deny service to gay people in his restaurant. However, due to his religious beliefs, he does not believe in gay marriage ... and that's why he wouldn't service one.
Meanwhile, he says the threats have been serious enough that he's closing his pizza joint ... at least until the dust settles.
I have to say that this kind of aggressive response is not okay in my book.
I would support a boycott, or even ridiculing online, but to actually threaten these people is stepping way over the line. This kind of thing leads to that whole "gay mafia" meme which is ridiculous, but which is reinforced by these actions.
Personally I thin the whole thing is moot.
I mean who in their right mind, gay or not, has a pizzeria cater their wedding?
I mean Bristol and Dakota maybe, but who else?
Update: Damn it looks like it really pays to be homophobic assholes.
Me! I love pizza and told my family to serve it after my funeral! PIZZA!
ReplyDeleteIt's on my Celebration of Life menu too ! Along with wings and beef on weck.
DeleteLast couple of wedding receptions I went to, pizza was delivered after all the old folks went to bed and they cranked up music decibels.
DeleteBut somehow I find it hard to believe a pizza joint would ask anyone ordering a bunch of pizzas whether the destination was a gay wedding. Maybe these idiots ask the delivery people to sniff around and rescue their pizzas if it seems like a gay person might violate them.
Beef on weck! I want sooooo bad...
DeleteMy brother in Alabama had his daughter's wedding catered by some corporate Italian place..cold pasta, cold garlic stix, and limp salad. So it is done. (Oh, and he and the family are avid church goers and staunch Republicans. Of course.)
ReplyDelete"O'Connor says" he was threatened. Surely he reported those 'threats' to the police, who can substantiate them, correct? "he says" I mean, surely this devout guy whose devotional decorating of his place of business looks as much like a church, but whose gay-aversion has been exposed to sunlight for all the world, wouldn't exaggerate or make things up, right?
ReplyDeleteGood point.
Deletealong the same lines as $arah reporting to the juneau cops that her daughters were threatened with rape ?
Deleteany excuse for the cross-eyed pretend governor, useless skank to hightail it out of juneau and back to the wasilla to lay in her bed all day .. that or the taco bell in juneau really really sucked - too, also ..
They announced on BLAZE the had started a GOFUNDME for them. Asof about an hour ago it went from $60,000 to $100,000 already pledged Nice unemployment check! Hope they taxes off the top before paying them so they won't be in trouble for not paying their taxes! :-) Bless their hearts!
DeleteActually they do have some documentation. A high school coach tweeted an arosn threat, of sorts. And I agree threats of violence are wrong - threats to come protest, no problem, some really funny yelp reviews - good reading and pretty harmless since previously they had 2 reviews.
DeleteThey have a 1/2 million in the Go Fund Me now, that Pizza Joint will never reopen. 1st tell me how many gay weddings they would have to cater in that town of 2,000 among the cornstalks and why they would have a reason to make such a statement.
DeleteThis sure beats torching a failing business!
But they'll probably do that too, since threats have been made, all they need is the eyes on the business to go away so they can...
I agree that threats are ridiculous. Doesn't help the cause. And, really, who does take out pizza for a wedding?? Now, on the other hand, Sen. Cotton's comments that gays should feel lucky not to be killed is another thing all together. That is cause for concern. It sounds like a threat.
ReplyDeleteSen. Cotton probably thinks I should be grateful we don't burn witches anymore.
DeleteLet's not kid ourselves: They still burn us, those of us who are or think different! They may use different means, but burn us they do!
Delete"O'Connor says he was immediately flooded by threatening phone calls, and social media postings. "
ReplyDelete------------------------------------------
He says. Can he produce this "flood" of threatening calls (voice mail messages, etc.) and social media postings?
Maybe he was threatened, maybe not. People responding by mocking, insulting, belittling, demeaning, and telling him exactly what they think of his morals, bigotry, and hypocrisy is not the same as "threatening" him, however unpleasant and distressing it must have been for him.
If he was threatened, I feel sorry for him. That should not have happened, but I have no respect whatsoever for someone who so hypocritically singles out one alleged sin for which he will stand in judgment.
Are these people truly being threatened, or are they pulling the usual fundagelical "Help, help, I'm being PERSECUTED because someone says they disagree with me" ploy?
ReplyDeleteI doubt the threats were real. And this guy had no qualms about setting up a Go Fund Me site very quickly, to make up for his lost business. Idiots have donated over $50,000 so far. Why ??
DeleteThat Go-Fund Me $50k should keep their doors closed a while...
DeleteDoesn't "Welfare" kill the spirit to work? LOL
Seriously now one of the cardinal rules of business that I have worked under my entire life is, "When it comes to business and my customers, I have no opinion when it comes to religion or politics." I will politely listen to whatever they have to say or politely excuse myself stating I need to break the conversation and get my work done so I can take care of the next customer.
I myself even though I am a very opinionated liberal have nothing to share when I'm with a customer. It's business and nothing else. I work, you pay me, I go on to the next customer, and hope if the last customer needs the service I offer again that they will call me. I'm trying not to give them a reason not to. I like succeeding in business.
"I mean, all I said was that I don't believe in Civil Rights for all Americans because I cherry-pick my prejudices from an ancient religious text, is that really that bad?"

Great point! Leviticus also forbids eating shellfish, mixing meat and milk, and eating pork. So much for their pizza toppings! It also forbids wearing clothing of mixed fibers, which means Crystal's outfits are completely forbidden.

Cynical Knishes wonders if these very religious pizza makers were "chosen" by a Higher Authority (read: the usual RWNJ puppet masters) to come out (no pun intended), make their original statement, get plenty of face time in the press, then complain that they've had threats and have to close the shop (that looks as if it's decorated straight out of the All-Occasion Crucifix Aisle at Hobby Lobby). It serves the RW-Xtain establishment by reinforcing the "Librul Hater" meme after the law got such a negative and deserved backlash. I'm sure the persecuted owners will be paid VERY well, and will reopen-- if not there, in another sympathetic location where shills will be bussed in for the grand opening media blitz.
ReplyDeleteProbably in a town with a large enough population to sustain their business. Population 2,000 must keep em really busy!
DeleteThey sure are getting a wad of cash from a GoFundMe scam set up for them, that's for sure.
DeleteThey were probably days away from torching their failing business when this manna from heaven fell on them...
DeleteSomeone mentioned, after seeing Mrs. O'Connor in a TV interview, that one can tell, by her style choices, that she had no gay friends.
ReplyDeleteI think that kind of snark is more than appropriate for these fools. Perhaps they thought that their business would increase once the "rill Christians" became aware of their brave stand. Epic fail. They are done. They have become the symbol of the anti-LGBT movement.
Right out of the Chik-Fil-A playbook!

ReplyDeleteThey are taking the backlash all the way to the bank to the tune of almost $200,000 from almost 7,000 donors in 20 hours.
Yes, the Pizzeria did get nasty e-mails and supposedly threats, and that's not right. There'll always be hateful responders who have no boundaries, no matter what group anyone fits into. That said, this whole thing started when O'Connor spoke to a reporter and told the world he would not cater to gay weddings. This is the crux of the whole matter.
ReplyDeleteWhen people allow themselves to be interviewed on national TV and say things that they know will provoke the public, they are responsible for the backlash. They should know better than to put their business, family and private beliefs on the line, for attention.
Righteous indignation comes back to bite a person. It doesn't add anything positive. It doesn't help anyone, including LGBT people, to seek Christ, and they have every right to seek him as much as the next guy. It shows such superior self-righteous behavior and turns anyone away.
To give them the benefit of the doubt, they could pledge their rights of freedom of religion based on their conscience to deny. But, and the big but here is, why don't they just wait until they are sued? Chances are, they might never be sued.
Gays I know would be hurt, and it is a hurtful thing to do to them, but they'd just go down the street and find another pizzeria. If a couple do engage in taking the business that declines them, to court, well, that's the law. But, many gays aren't looking for a fight, and that's what is so incredibly ironic here.
It's the christian businessman who demands media listen to his theology and by god, he's going to impose his rights and dare anyone to challenge him. That is the attitude I perceive with the O'Connors.
Who could feel sorry for them. They no doubt planned this, as a fund drive is already in the works and $100,000 has already been raised. Such persecution.
The pizzeria got nasty emails because they said nasty things? OH, the HORROR!!! The Christian bigots are being held accountable for their words? I thought right-wingers were big on personal accountability!
DeleteIndiana lawmakers announced proposed changes Thursday to the state's new religious objections law aimed at quelling widespread criticism from businesses and other groups that have called the proposal anti-gay.
ReplyDeleteThe revisions, which still require approval from the full Legislature and Republican Gov. Mike Pence, come as lawmakers in Arkansas scramble to revise that state's own religious objections legislation amid cries that it could permit discrimination.
The Indiana amendment prohibits service providers from using the law as a legal defense for refusing to provide services, goods, facilities or accommodations. It also bars discrimination based on race, color, religion, ancestry, age, national origin, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or U.S. military service.
The measure exempts churches and affiliated schools, along with nonprofit religious organizations.
House Speaker Brian Bosma said the agreement sends a "very strong statement" that the state will not tolerate discrimination.
The law "cannot be used to discriminate against anyone," he said.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-indiana-law-discrimination-20150402-story.html
So it's ok for a church or a non-profit religious organization to discriminate against any or all of the groups mentioned?? That's just bullshit, sorry.
Delete@11:31
DeleteUnfortunately, it is not bullshit. Do a search on "Hobby Lobby" and "sincerely held" for a dismal tale of how legal it is.

ReplyDeleteSad to say, what does SARAH PALIN have in common with ANTI-GAY Memories Pizza in Indiana?
Answer:
Wasilla, Alaska's First Daughter
Willow Palin’s homophobic Facebook rant
The 16-year-old has already had her scrapes with bad publicity this year, after allegedly going all “Risky Business” and partying to the tune of several thousand dollars’ worth of damages in a nearby empty house. She’s also already distinguished herself on “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” as the cast member most likely to roll her eyes in disgust when her mom asks her to clean up after herself. She is also, apparently, like an unfortunate number of other teens around the land, a homophobic bully who can’t spell.
“Haha your so gay. I have no idea who you are, But what I’ve seen pictures of, your disgusting … My sister had a kid and is still hot” and mentioning, by the way, “Tre stfu. Your such a faggot.”
http://www.salon.com/2010/11/17/willow_palin_facebook_rant/
Homophobic rants in Sarah Palin's family is not limited to just one member of Sarah Palin's family.
There's Wasilla, Alaska's First Grandson
Tripp Palin, son of Bristol Palin and grandson of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, apparently lobs an anti-gay slur at his aunt Willow Palin during an episode of Bristol's Lifetime reality series, Bristol Palin: Life's A Tripp that is now making the rounds online.
In the clip, Tripp throws a toddler tantrum when his mother and aunt, Willow, tell him that he can't go to the pool.
"I hate you," he tells Willow, who scolds Tripp, saying, "If you say that one more time, you're getting soap in your mouth. Got it?"
Tripp's response to that sounds a lot like "Go away you faggot,"although Lifetime bleeped out the word.
"I'm doing a terrible job disciplining Tripp," Bristol says, after bursting into giggles. "I know he's going to continue to push the boundaries and push the limits."
Tripp saying "faggot" to his mother Bristol Palin and Willow on "Life's ...:

Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz and Bobby Jindal pile on in support of controversial law they say includes the right to discriminate against LGBT Americans
Republican presidential hopefuls may be seeking to distinguish themselves, but contenders from the moderate establishment favorite Jeb Bush to the social-conservative evangelist Ted Cruz seem to agree on the hard-right controversy of the week: religious freedom includes the right to discriminate against the LGBT community
Why would anyone believe anything these people say? Gay people threatening them because they aren't going to cater gay weddings? What self-respecting gay bride/bridegroom (or straight bride or bridegroom) would want to have their wedding catered by a pizza parlor? I'm sure that ANY phone call or twitter or Facebook post from someone who says that they are gay and won't frequent their establishment would terrify these morons. DeleteMelissa McEwan at Shakesville blog makes a good point that there is an ugly classism about the "pizza for weddings?" snark:
ReplyDelete"When people can't even afford pizza, we do pot-lucks. Everyone brings something, to celebrate.
That isn't unique to Indiana, of course. It's one of many places across the country where this is part of the culture.
By necessity.
This smug guffawing at the idea of catered pizza is just another indication that people don't understand and don't care about this state. This culture.
And it's many of the same people advocating withholding money from Hoosiers with a boycott who are then turning around and laughing at people who can't afford upscale catering.
Just stop. Please. Stop with the classist shit. It's so ugly.
Progressives should be ashamed of ourselves that the best we can do is laugh and point at poor people."
http://www.shakesville.com/2015/04/pizza-and-progressives.html
I've been to plenty of poor people weddings--I'm talking the front yard between the barn and the house with cars parked everywhere, as well as church, grandma's front porch, the whole rural poverty scene--and there's never been the least hint of pizza anywhere. I could see it for a 10 or 12 person wedding gathering, but you could hardly call that catering. It's just pizza at that point.
DeleteI call bullshit on that. The joke is that the fabulous gays would never have something as boring as pizza at their weddings. First, but not the last.
ReplyDeleteVery simple and fair solution: FORCE these businesses disclose their policies on their front doors and on their websites. Surely every business is proud of their practices; those who welcome all customers and those who serve exclusively Jeebus-approved clientele, because Jeebus loves you. Let potential customers know they about to conduct business with owners who believe an invisible cranky old man in the sky commands them to discriminate against some of our citiizens.
Absent the repeal of the ridiculous laws, full and public disclosure is the best way to sort this out.
We had that system once. Businesses posted "whites only" etc. signs. It was legal.
DeleteThe difference today is that big boycott is now on hair trigger. The Indiana law is being modified, not because it's wrong, but because the financial hit exceeded expectations (which were idiotically low).
Public businesses are to provide service to the public. If a business doesn't want to do that, it has to become a private club and sell memberships.
Can't have it both ways, assholes.
ReplyDeleteHow soon will C4P come out with pizza T-shirts? 3-2-1...
ReplyDeleteSince the pizza place owners said they wouldn't deny service to a gay couple who came to the shop, the good people of Indiana should make this the gayest pizza place on the planet. Eat some pizza, snuggle with your same-sex partner, and bring a drag queen for extra cheesy fun.
ReplyDeleteI would like to know how their business was doing before this. It looks like a scam to me.
ReplyDeleteIt was probably mere days away from being an Arson Investigation if this "Pot 'o Gold" didn't land in their laps...
DeleteUnder the circumstances "homophobic asshole" is a major overreaction too. They've been in business for 9 years. By all accounts they've happily served EVERYONE who walked in the door despite the fact that there is no law compelling them to do so. Their only mistake was naively answering a reporter's questions honestly.
ReplyDeleteFor gay rights to move forward we need a compromise we call all live with. The harassment of small business owners, both legal and illegal, does nothing to advance anyone's interests, except maybe bigots. While much remains to be done we need to move beyond the paradigm of the '60's civil rights movement. No matter who you are it isn't that hard to find a pizza or a cake in 2015.
There is no need to use the term "homophobic asshole" when the word bigot will suffice. And what in your view is "the paradigm of the 60's civil rights movement?"
Delete@12:40
Delete”Their only mistake was naively answering a reporter's questions honestly."
So, using your logic, if they had said "we don't cater black weddings" that would have be just a naive answer, not a hateful utterance from a righteous bigot?
I think you need to go talk to that poster above who dissed the Pizza for a wedding comments as out of touch with rural poverty. Small towns are not exactly option heavy This one shows three total - one as part of a bar and grill.
Delete'Homophobic asshole' is a big leap from supporting the rights of small business to have the freedom to operate and cater to whomever they choose. It is doubtful that this business has turned away any paying customer in the past. But they should not have to be threatened with a lawsuit if they choose to. It is their damn business, not yours.
Delete2:18
DeleteIt is our damn business child.
The family, daughter and dad, just seem kind of stupid, of course they are they are religious!
DeleteI've had the opportunity to hire and fire people based on their religion. I've both fired and hired people based on their religiosity or lack there of. Of course I never stated religion as a reason for hiring or firing, but I ask some vague questions in my interviews and in the times I've had to reprimand people made a point to find out if there is religion that caused them to act the way they did. Not overtly, but in a casual enough manner that I can hire and fire, based on their beliefs, without them knowing.
I have a great staff now, no funny people with any beliefs, basically a lovely Atheist crew that causes me no problems.
Wrong 3:08, it is their damn business that they built and operate, and you can go fuck yourself- child.
Delete@3:26
Delete"Whites only" was the owners' damn business right up until it became illegal.
3:26 - The child is you fool. You are also an idiot.
DeleteMy view of the paradigm of the "60"s civil rights movement is not important. What is important is that if you substitute a few words--like homophobic for racist--it's pretty much the same old thing all over again. It's like we have not moved forward at all and the world has not changed in 50 years. While we have not gone as far as I would like this country has clearly moved forward and the world has changed.
DeleteSome of what's happened in the name of equality is just plain crazy. Take this one for example:
http://www.thenewamerican.com/culture/faith-and-morals/item/18431-baker-who-refused-same-sex-couple-must-take-sensitivity-training
Sensitivity training and government mandated cakes? What's next? We prop people's eyelids open and subject them to electric shock therapy if they don't conform? I sometimes work in the wedding industry. Most businesses are welcoming gay people with open arms. I have seen it and been part of it myself. Everyone can get the cake of their dreams. This is not the Jim Crow South that we're talking about.
Right now today this sort of harassment is one of the biggest obstacles standing in the way of legal equality for gay people. How do you get the politicians in Indiana and elsewhere to vote for equality when they know that some of their Christian citizens will be subjected to this sort of treatment?
And as long as you patronize the businesses of bigots they will remain bigots.
DeleteWould you think the same if LBGT people had to sit in a special area of the restaurant and couldn't use the same bathroom as the rest of the public? Had their own drinking fountain? Had to wear a big LGBT on their chest?
