An Ohio police officer refused to shoot a charging suspect even as he begged for the officer to take his life.
The officer's decision not to fire at a man accused of double murder, who was pleading for him to follow through with his "suicide by cop" plans, was captured on his bodycam video.
New Richmond Officer Jesse Kidder was called to follow a possibly armed suspect in an Ohio murder Thursday. Suddenly the suspect, identified by police as Michael Wilcox, got out of his car and started to charge at the cop.
"Law enforcement officers all across the nation have to deal with split-second decisions that mean life or death," Kidder told TV station WLWT. "I wanted to be absolutely sure before I used deadly force."
There is all kinds of praise coming this officer's way right now, and surely he deserves it.

I will tell you that I want to believe that it would, I truly do.
However a part of me has to wonder.
Not only would this kid have been dead if he was black---he wouldn't have had time to beg for death. The minute the cop had a bead on him--- his life would have been over. And that is a fact.

ReplyDeleteWhat I find ironic is here is a white criminal asking a cop to shoot, yet he doesn't. And we've seen black men, many innocent, pleading for them not to shoot, yet are.

In one of the news stories I read that the body cam he was wearing was "a gift from a relative." Made me think that he was wearing it voluntarily and not as part of that department's policy? No question, as this incident shows, that officers run in to situations we can hardly imagine, and 'suicide by cop' is a tactic often tried. And, how sad that we are so inured to cops shooting when they don't have to that the simple act of professionalism and restraint garners kudos. Still, maybe he'll help set an example for more of his fellow officers and raise the professional bar for fellow officers from its recent sorry state.
ReplyDeleteSo, by not killing that known murderer, this cop is some kind of hero? How twisted is that? So many killings by cop with the lamest of excuces given, and one cop does his job appropriately, and he's lauded as a hero. But one more thing that bears noting: the perp is a WHITE GUY!

Thte Baltimore incident was slaughter, plain and simple. They tossed him into a paddy wagon and four vertebrae in his back crushed all by themselves? They better open an investigation and have an impartial medical examiner give testimony.

Not only was he wearing his own body camera, but he had be advised ahead of time that the suspect was probably going to try suicide by cop. The officer is also recent military, & their rules of engagement are a little different than target-range shooting macho cops.
ReplyDeleteOf course he would be dead if he were black. After all you've seen this year, how can you even wonder? Being a 12 year old kid playing in a park is a death sentence if you're black. Shooting up a movie theater and killing more than a dozen people warrants a peaceful arrest and trial if you're white.

Where was Zimmerman's body camera? How brave the killer is, running at a cop a begging to be shot, after he had no problem killing, no problem at all. This is the type Sarah calls "patriot".

I don't have to wonder what the outcome would have been if the suspect was black. I'm completely certain that the man would be dead, no questions asked. No debate here.
