White House Correspondents Dinner open thread.

For my money this is the must watch TV for the evening.

The host tonight is Cecily Strong who I think really has her work cut out for her considering some of the amazing hosts of the past. (My favorite? Stephen Colbert in 2006. Still just about the bravest performance I have ever seen.)

Here is the list of invited guests. Which includes:

ABC - GWU Alumni and Scandal star Kerry Washington

Christian Broadcasting Network - Newt and Callista Gingrich

CBS News - Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and TV’s Madam Secretary Sec. of State Téa Leoni.

CNN - Actress (and ex-wife of CNN founder Ted Turner) Jane Fonda Fox News - Donald Trump, Martha Stewart, and reality TV star Brody Jenner

Huffington Post - YouTube and Vine stars like Bethany Mota, Nash Grier, Marcus Johns, Jerome Jarre, and Tyler Oakley

USA Today - Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, Naya Rivera of Glee, and Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty

AOL - Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, and New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick

The Hill - Actresses Lucy Liu and Connie Britton

The Washington Post - Steve Case, co-founder of AOL and Chairman of Case Foundation and Revolution, and Megan Smith, United States Chief Technology Officer in the Office of Science and Technology Policy

(Yes you're correct, she wasn't invited here either.)

Lately my favorite part of the night is Obama's comedy routine.

He was great last year and I have every expectation that he will be even better this year.

I will update this post as new material becomes available.

Update: Some tweets about the WHCD.

The President killed it tonight.

Update 2: Here is the President's entire monologue.

I agree that Stephen Colbert was the BEST. He insulted W, Fox the tv and print media ,NSA you name it.He insulted them all with right on criticisms . The Village Idiot W was laughing it took awhile (rem this is W) for him to catch on he was being destroyed by SC. Then he didn't laugh so much.It looks like Laura Bush said fuck you when SC walked by her at the end of his comments. I urge everyone to watch it on You Tube. It is a thing of Joy.

    1. Bush was laughing until someone explained it all to him. Then he finally got it.

      Dumbest president ever.

History will reflect that his legacy was that of the worst president we've ever had. And I doubt we will see any future president unseat him from that title.

But he's had 'big names in the GOP' tell him that only HE can beat Hillary. Yes, Donny, we really need a President who is such an astute business man that he took his father's fortune, and bankrupted freaking casinos! How does a casino go bankrupt? If Trump can't even make the machines tilt for the house, how could he ever rig enough Diebolds to win a Primary? Even against what's currently running for the GOP? Donny, I think the blind hair dye is eating your remaining brain cells.

I especially enjoyed how President Obama put down FOX as well as the others - CNN and MSNBC. They ALL have it coming to them and it's no wonder their viewership has decreased. People are sick of the constant negative reporting!

I use to watch MSNBC and do no longer. Cannot stand Chris Matthews. Ed rants and raves and chris Hayes guy leaves me cold - too cocky!

Rachel Maddow is more of a fact-based journalist and teacher. Have enjoyed her through the years above anyone else. Plus, she is well educated and has her doctorate. She IS Dr. Maddow, but doesn't use the designation, bringing attention to herself. Wish they had her on one of the Sunday shows instead of the white, male Republican assholes! She'd be so much better than any of them!

    1. Well said. ;) Think about it. What if Palin were what we were told she was in 2008? A bright (no), educated (no), college graduate (no), first woman governor of Alaska (okay), with a lovely family (eh?), a doting husband (no), five children (no), an energy expert (no), and a competent, ethical governor (no), who was fully prepared to take over as president in time of need.

If her story were true, she would have been at the WHCD tonight. After the election, she would have gone back to Alaska and finished out a successful term as governor. She might have chosen to run again, and if re-elected, would have continued educating herself on a national level, and made use of contacts established during the campaign to keep herself visible on a national level, with a identity being established as someone who would advance on her own accomplishments.

If she had finished out her term and decided not to run again, she could have established herself as a savvy and intelligent commentator on political events, coming across as someone who took every opportunity to educate herself and advance her understanding of the country and the world.

She would have been at the dinner tonight as a competent, accomplished professional who appreciated the vast opportunities afforded to her by the campaign, and accepted that while the republican ticket didn't win, she could rightly be proud of even just being on the ticket.

Sadly, not one word of her story was true. The reality is that she was nothing but an unintelligent, uneducated, incurious person with enough superficial charm to fool people for enough time for her to take advantage of their ignorance.

In the end, her immense narcissism combined with her (let's be blunt) stupidity, led to her being ostracized by the RNC and not even welcome at the very next convention.

I was glad the president saw no reason to mention her tonight. He mentioned actual people, relevant for good or ill, but didn't bother with someone who is nothing more than a teen mean girl, bitching and whining on facebook waah, waah, waah.

      Good riddance, Palin.

I'll agree with your take on the humorous part of the event so far. But what I noticed more than that was our President's lack of humor. He was not himself tonight. He delivered his lines and jokes as we've come to expect, but there was something more serious in his eyes. It may be that he feels that he doesn't need to play this game any longer, but I sense something more. I can't even imagine what this man knows and deals with on a daily basis. I love him to pieces.

I agree with the bucket list thing....the funniest part of his speech and yes, he did seem some what subdued this time around. This man has so much on his plate it is impossible to comprehend...praising his wife was super sweet. I love the Bohner inviting butthead for his funeral speech was pretty good too. As far as Cecily....she stunk, omg..as in major thud. I don't think she is very funny on SNL either, but thats just me. She had a few good ones but the room was pretty quiet. She read off her cards more than looking up & the Aaron Schock thing was way too long. Just don't think she is a good stand up..period.

Sharon I agree, the host was a dud she hit the right talking points but she didn't' make them funny. It made me think of other female hosts, out of the list I thought Ellen would've done a better job. I too notice the lack of him smiling which we come to love and expect but President Obama still killed it, I'm going to miss him when he leaves office.

    2. I agree. I had never heard of Cecily before. Some of her lines were good, but she did not have the perfect timing and delivery needed for such a performance.

She wasn't horrible, and I don't bear her any ill will, but I think there may have been better choices.

I also found her heavy eye makeup very distracting. It looked to me as though the eyelashes on the right (her left) were going to fall off.

I haven't been able to see it all as yet, but everything I heard and read just cracked me up...especially when you could tell there were those in the audience who'd had their senses of humor removed, so they could stand being a Republican.

As well as "normal" people who just aren't hip enough for the room...laughing only when they noticed everyone else was.

You KNOW you killed, when comments sections of websites have angry sounding reich wingers stomping their feet and demanding we stop laughing.

I just watched the video of President Obama's speech. I thought he did fine. I think he's been in a serious mood lately so that set the tenor of his words. I think he is very serious about the danger of Citizens United, i.e. the Koch brothers, about climate change and the dangerous behavior of the GOP in that regard. The rising death toll in Nepal cannot be good news either. It has to be clear to him that American journalists have never given him any credit for his accomplishments, often made despite their best efforts to thwart them.

I thought the audience was rude to him. Very sparse applause; it was as if he were speaking a foreign language. And they sure were uncomfortable with the words of angry "Luther." I bet you could smell the Republicans' hatred of him in that audience from a hundred miles away. As usual, President Obama retained his grace and intelligence throughout. He'll have one more of these to get through.
