A great day for my hometown, as Ethan Berkowitz wins big against Amy Demboski.

Courtesy of Alaska Dispatch:

Ethan Berkowitz surged to a decisive win over opponent Amy Demboski in the Anchorage mayoral runoff election Tuesday night.

With 98 percent of the vote counted, Berkowitz had more than 59 percent of the vote to Demboski’s 41 percent, a margin that was insurmountable.

Berkowitz had held a commanding lead over Demboski throughout the evening. As of 11 p.m., 122 of the municipality’s 124 precincts had reported. Berkowitz will take over the mayor's office from Dan Sullivan on July 1.

As his lead over Demboski held strong, Berkowitz stood on a chair at his campaign party in a downtown restaurant to wild applause and waving signs. He asked his supporters to continue to help when the night’s celebration was over, asking them to work on unifying Anchorage and heal the divisions that marked the final days of the campaign.

“There is a better way,” Berkowitz said. “It doesn’t matter if you're a Republican, a Democrat, a Libertarian, an independent or you don’t even vote. This is our Anchorage!”

As the applause and screams almost drowned him out, he continued, “It doesn't matter if you’re a Muslim, a Jew, a Christian, a Buddhist or something else. This is our Anchorage! It doesn’t matter if you’re straight or gay or lesbian or transgender.”

Yes this is our Anchorage, and fortunately the combined efforts of the Koch brothers and Jerry Prevo were not able to change that.

I want to thank every Anchorage visitor to IM who voted for Ethan in this election. As I am sure you know this city desperately needs somebody like him to help us repair the damage done during the Sullivan administration.

Ethan Berkowitz is a hard worker, and a man who really cares about the people of this city.

I could not have asked for a better start to my day today.

I was afraid to even drop in here today to see the results. So many times we've heard that the crazies have taken over government in Alaska -I didn't want to hear it again.
And I don't even live there.

Outstanding that Ethan won and by so much! Especially good to see that the influence of Jerry Prevo and his ilk, from the Baptist Church, didn't work! So many folks got out and voted - was so exciting to watch!

Anchorage has turned away from a Republican running their city! Yea!! Exiting Mayor Sullivan saw every candidate he supported fail - i.e. Dan Coffey and Amy Demboski!

Next - Anchorage and Eagle River voters need to do away w/the Republican majority Alaska Legislature! We have a lot of work to do and I look forward to helping in the mission!

Ethan ran a wonderful, positive campaign where Amy did not! She was nasty and proven to be a liar in more ways than one. I hope that once her term is over on the Anchorage Assembly that we never see the likes of her again!

Thrilled to hear that Ethan Berkowitz is your new mayor! AK's reputation has suffered enough with the parade of dingbats, carpetbaggers and Koch shills. It's reassuring to know that the word is getting out among the locals to restore a bit of sanity to your beautiful state.

Congratulations Anchorage. I am not even local and I was following this with much interest. I suspect Demboski had quite a few folks worried even if the odds were long.

  12. Did Dembowski or Prevo bring out the big guns and talk about "them" and "those people", when talking about Berkowitz?
I know Palin tried to mark one candidate in one of her election as a possible "jew" because of his last name. Was that done at all here?

Amy brought out negative items at the end of the race that included President Obama's and Ethan's 'supposed' tie as well as saying Ethan was Jewish. I think the 'incest' issue was her downfall though - which included Bernadette (radio show) and Jerry Prevo (Baptist Church) pushing the information. That was the worst I've ever seen done in a political race! It backfired, big time!

Amy was dirty and it cost her the race by a huge margin!

And, the corker last night was: Anchorage TV news interviewed Amy about her huge loss and she said she happy she had run such a positive campaign! I almost spit out the water I was drinking!

Anchorage folks saw through her and she was rejected big time!

Now we have to make sure that she doesn't stay on the Anchorage Assembly when she comes up for reelection. If, she runs again.

    2. She didn't accuse him of eating babies or talk about his "New York" sense of humor?

I'm glad the voters are being turned off by negative campaigning. It's pretty much the only trick in the GOP bag.

Too bad Amy didn't have to resign from the assembly before she ran for mayor.

E.B. was no doubt reminded it is never a good idea idea to participate in a conversation with an extremist about a hot button social issue. Any point that can be twisted into something unintended will be. I am glad a solid majority of voters saw beyond Demboski's, Prevo's, and Wilson's attempts to make the election about extremist hate issues rather than a vision of Anchorage and the state. It was a small victory in the greater fight against extremist hate, but an important one.

  15. Congratulations. That must be a relief.

How long is his term? 4 years? What are the term limits? 2?

I hope this is the beginning of a long future of public service from Ethan to the citizens of Anchorage and then the state of Alaska. He will serve the state well on the local level before, hopefully, moving to the state and then federal level.

I hope someday Ethan will be your congressman from the state of Alaska.

Sarah didn't publically endorse anyone in the mayoral/Anchorage race!

I'm sure she was told to keep her mouth shut as to Amy because they/Republicans would think her support a very, very negative influence.

Plus, Palin is from Wasilla (a one-hour drive north of Anchorage) which is not affiliated with Anchorage.

Remember too that Sarah Palin is not liked by the majority in the Alaska Republican Party.

O/T but this is kind of funny. They say Sarah is 66 - she isn't but starting to look like it!

Bernice Anders: ‘Sarah Palin Made My Life Hell On Earth’ -

The quiet routine for retiree Bernice Anders, who shares her name – at least phonetically – with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, came to an abrupt end last weekend, after former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, 66, repeatedly referred to Sanders as “Bernice Anders” during a fundraiser for Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

“Everything went upside-down,” said the mild-mannered Anders. “Sarah Palin made my life a hell on earth is what she did. The phone rang and rang all day and half the night. All these people asking me about her and who I was voting for – one person even said, ‘Are you a Socialist? You need to go back to Russia and sit on your porch!’ It didn’t make sense to me.”

Kind of like The Onion,' the great part is that the national review injects so much reality and mirrors the true personality and past actions of the person they are parodying, that their articles are usually entirely believable.

Did anyone else notice of the radio attack ad's from Amy that they mentioned Ethan would be taxing CHURCHES well we all know where that bit is coming from. God forbid that Prevo's empire would ever pay a dime in taxes. Even one of our favorite AM Radio fools' favorite callers ANDY has brought up taxing the CHURCHES and NON PROFITS. According to ANDY there are 60% of residents paying 100% of the taxes, that leaves 40% paying nothing and laughing all the way to the pulpit. Chew on that RR.

There's little chance of the legislature doing anything about Prevo/ABTs tax exemptions. Glenn Biegel (sp) an ABT "pastor" went to his contacts in the legislature and got them to override the Municipality by getting specific legislation written for ABT to get out of paying taxes on all their miscellaneous "pastors" homes. Our city assessor was trying to do the right thing and had done a complete review of all the exempt properties, but our legislature at the time was very much in bed with Prevo.
