Mike Huckabee posts his support for the child molesting Josh Duggar on Facebook, suffers immediate backlash.

Courtesy of Huckabee's Facebook page:

Janet and I want to affirm our support for the Duggar family. Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, 'inexcusable,' but that doesn’t mean 'unforgivable.' He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities. No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things. The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand—that being a minor means that one's judgement is not mature. No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility. Those who have enjoyed revealing this long ago sins in order to discredit the Duggar family have actually revealed their own insensitive bloodthirst, for there was no consideration of the fact that the victims wanted this to be left in the past and ultimately a judge had the information on file destroyed—not to protect Josh, but the innocent victims. Janet and I love Jim Bob and Michelle and their entire family. They are no more perfect a family than any family, but their Christian witness is not marred in our eyes because following Christ is not a declaration of our perfection, but of HIS perfection. It is precisely because we are all sinners that we need His grace and His forgiveness. We have been blessed to receive God’s love and we would do no less than to extend our love and support for our friends. In fact, it is such times as this, when real friends show up and stand up. Today, Janet and I want to show up and stand up for our friends. Let others run from them. We will run to them with our support.

Well that made me throw up in my mouth a little.

And I was not alone, get a load of some of the comments that showed up on Huckabee's page:

I respectfully disagree. His behavior is unforgivable to me and so is covering it up and allowing it to continue. Can't hide behind Jesus to excuse all bad behavior.

Well you have lost my support! I'm a conservative Christian, and was once a Duggar supporter, but I believe that 14 years old or not he should have never been allowed to continue to live in the home with the girls, and the show should have never aired. He damaged those girls for he rest of their lives, and anyone who can carry on and say it's ok now because he admitted he was wrong is just as sick as him.

I think you just kissed your chances away for the presidential nomination.

You all are insane. He molested children. And Mr. Huckabee if he was a child not aware of his actions, why is a 14 year tried as an adult for killing. Give me a break. So if abusers repent they dont deserve to be punished??? Or just "good" Christians on tv. Does it worry anyone he has children. Wow.

I was really happy that you decided to run for president but now you have lost my support. I'm was a victim of sexual molestation and it may go away for the abuser nut it doesn't for the victims. We may forgive, but we don't forget. Child molesters takes away our chance of having a normal child, a normal teenager, and a normal adult. I will mo longer support or vote for you. Nobody is thinking about victims on all this.

Let me get this straight (no pun intended). This man will publicly support an admitted child molester, but will condemn a gay couple. What sense or logic is involved with this? And the fact that his family helped to cover up this atrocity, is even more baffling. In my line of work I have seen firsthand the effects are of children who were molested by adults or other children. I am sorry but these actions should be condemned. And the show of support is absolutely ridiculous. Shame on you Mike. And shame on all of you referencing "he who is without sin may cast the first stone", what happened to Matthew 19:14.

And believe me these go on, and on, and on.

You know this will prove to be so damaging to Huckabee's chances of winning the Republican nomination that I'm almost surprised that Jeb Bush has offered his support to Josh Duggar as well.

I'm of two minds. ON the one hand, I was truck by the comment that says gays are condemned, but child molestation is to be forgiven. On the other hand, if we make child molesters pay for their actions for the rest of their lives, why should they ever try to reform. I'm not saying there shouldn't be consequences, and I am saying that children should be protected from such people.
But this happened as a minor, and my understanding is he really doesn't do that anymore. He thinks it's wrong.
I'd rather see the show continue, and show how the family, and Josh have dealt with this. Sunshine is a lot more effective than driving things underground

What a crock of shit. He knew it was wrong then too. He hid it from his parents long enough to claim five victims. Those aren't the actions of some curious kid who was never taught right from wrong. And what are you basing your assumption that he "really doesn't do that anymore"? His say-so? I'm sure Gryphen will be reporting soon on the pedophiles from whom Josh received "counselling". For all we know they just taught him how to hide it better.

You lost me when you equated gays to child molesters and suggest gays can also be forgiven if they stop being gay. The other statement that it's your understanding he doesn't do the molesting any longer is even richer. Do you sleep with him so you can personally comment on his current sexual behavior? Somehow I doubt you have first-hand knowledge of whether he's still molesting or not. You defense of this situation, couched in a clucking of the tongue as though you think he made a "little" fourteen year old mistake when he fact the information suggests he fondled several girls, including sisters, for quite some time.

First, the research overwhelmingly shows that such actions (predatory abuse of younger/vulnerable victims as opposed to, say, consensual "exploration" by same-aged minors) tend to be lifelong behaviors, with an extremely high recidivism rate even AFTER all known counseling interventions.

Second, the assumption itself is flawed given that these actions take place within a fringe Christianist sect which pointedly seeks to isolate its female children through homeschooling, and also teaches them that not only are they to submit to males, but that they (the women and even young girls) are responsible for acting and dressing modestly so as not to cause the males to experience impure thoughts and feelings.

More victims? Most likely. But who knows if they also came forward, and what wagons were circled.

The first victim reported it right away to her father. Father scolded Josh. Josh did it again. Father prayed. Josh did it again and again to five daughters (one year after the first incident). Then father decided to look into the "treatment" program that was one year of hard labor, and decided instead of that option, to send the boy to a friend to work in construction (similar work as the "treatment" program, without the cost and the long time absence from the family). I doubt the "treatment" program was licensed or ran by credential therapists, maybe just religious authorities, but JimBob didn't want to spend the money and decided to do his own version of it. So JimBob knew the first time it happened. Josh didn't accept that he did anything wrong until he was sent away. (He said 12 years ago he made a mistake, his mistake was the time that he got sent away but not the others? Maybe the last straw was molesting the 4 year old?) Imagine telling your parents and having them shrug their shoulders and tell the girls how submissive they must be to men.

I might give Josh a *tiny* bit of leeway, as he was 14, and raised into what amounts to a cult. Josh is nothing more than a product of his environment.

The real monsters here are Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar. They KNEW this was going on, covered it up, and didn't send either Josh and his four sisters who were VICTIMS to treatment.

Completely disgusting. I hope the show is taken off of the air for good. Both Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar deserve to face criminal charges, because they allowed this abuse to go on in their own household. But I know that will never happen.

      I feel for those girls.

I don't know if Josh is still doing it or not. I assumed the way the story was told, he isn't. I find it plausible that a 14-year-ld boy doesn't continue the behavior. Some do. Some don't.

If he is still doing it, I say keep it on the air and let it be seen by the public. Probably more effective than driving it underground.

I'm not trying to defend Josh or molestation. I'm trying to consider how do we best help molesters so they don't create any new victims. (and much as it might be tempting, sending them all to an island isn't realistic) Nor does jail work very well (well, it works temporarily while they are out of circulation. But they will get out again). Lucy

I do struggle with demonizing ALL molesters as evil and unforgiveable. Not because I think they are poor misunderstood little boys - but because if we demonize them, forever and always, then there is no incentive to seek help, before or after acting on such urges. So if someone really has changed, I think we should accept the change - while being careful. I don't think I'd want him at a day care, teaching, etc.

For those of you who feel Josh should be tarred and feathered (a feeling I totally understand), how to you suggest he get help to stop harming children, without risking further punishment so that he avoids getting the help desperately needed?

The only equating of gays and molesters that I have seen was the comment that it seems awfully hypocritical, and lacking compassion, for Huckabee to say gays are going to hell, but molesters should be forgiven. Not sure where you heard something else. I didn't hear anyone say gays and molesters were somehow synonymous

No not really, although I understand why it may seem that way.. I have a great deal of compassion and empathy for victims of child abuse. More than you know.

I just want to find a solution that will create fewer victims. I'm not suggesting Josh should just "go his way." I just don't think demonizing and shunning all molesters, and taking away their lifestyles out of vengeance, serves victims or society. I'm not saying you have to become friends with them. Or trust your children with them. I just think demonizing doesnt' serve us, particularly if someone has been "clean" for several years. and I guess I don't see how cancelling the show serves victims. I think showcasing the problems of such a rigid upbrining, or showing his struggle, and perhaps those of his victims IF THEY CHOOSE, would be better.

I think the hypocrisy and problems of the rigid religious upbringing would be better dealt with by showing the effects, than by cutting off access to the information so that it's cult-like stuff the rest of us don't see. Perhaps showing him NOW taking full responsbility for his behavior, and it's effect on victims and survivors.

Mostly, I don't want MORE victims by driving discussion of SA underground.

So true! My hope is that the Duggar family and its Quiverfull Christianist sect have finally been exposed for the abusive cult it is, rather than the idealized, pure-minded "just one big family" hokum we've had to witness on TLC.

This TLC show has been a very sly, insidious indoctrination, serving as a means of mainstreaming and 'normalizing" what is an extreme sect with extreme views and values.

The programming has concealed many of the important facts about the actual beliefs and practices taught these children; the active political agenda and organized coordination between religious groups and legislators in Arkansas and elsewhere; and the PR veneer overlaying what is a destructive and coercive culture.

Maybe Michelle Duggar will be called out on the hypocrisy of recording a robocall supporting legislation that would protect her daughters from transgendered used of bathrooms, yet who did not protect her own daughters from a known predator in their own home.

Maybe Jim Bob Duggar will be called out on his choice of the Arkansas state trooper to give Josh his stern talking-to, who shortly afterward was convicted of child pornography, sentenced & paroled and who then re-offended and is now serving a 60-year sentence.

And just maybe the Duggar daughter who wants to go to college will actually break free and do it! A music degree at a Christian college, but still!

One thing that I haven't heard yet is did the girls get counseling? Women in these communities are just cattle & that's why it's not a big deal to them. That's why it was excused. They are just uneducated baby makers. I saw an article about one of the older girls that wants to go to college before getting married & Jim Bob is against it. The Huckster was governor of Arkansas at the time of the original events and nine months later when more occurred. Jim Bob Duggar was an Arkansas state legislator representing his district, and also served as the assistant chair of the state's criminal justice committee, which is likely how he could pull some strings and also knew who to go to for the stern talking-to from a state law enforcement office (the one now serving 50+ years for repeated possession of child pornography, no less.)

Huckabee is now so craven that he is making a grab for all the Duggar-demographic by showing his support. I think he also must have been in on the call that resulted in the extraordinary order by a state judge to destroy (not seal) all records related to Josh Duggar's offenses.

The problem so many have is not really just with Josh Duggar and his actions, no matter how wrong. What is truly heinous is the actions of the adults involved: the parents who did not protect the victims but instead allowed him to continue to live in the house (the details include: he fondled and groped the 5 victims not only at night both sleeping and awake, but also while reading and standing in the laundry room!).

Not only did the adults responsible for this predator NOT report it until nine months after first learning about it (when more/continuing abuse was revealed) but used their influence with the to protect him from consequences. His adult political and religious cronies helped him do it.

Harpo Studios learned of it when they received an email before the Duggar family was to appear on Oprah, and the email was forwarded to authorities. A short while later TLC put their show on the air.

Those 5 (and counting) victims meanwhile "forgave" Josh while continuing to live in a family and isolated homeschooled culture with a central tenet of female submission to males (fathers, brothers, husbands) and that females bear the responsibility to dress and act modestly so as not to "defraud" males.

Huckabee disgusts me, along with the judge who just ordered the destruction of case records, local law enforcement authorities, TLC producers and programmers (who ran a Josh=centered marathon Thursday!), good ol' Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, and all adult participants in the fringe Christian Quiverfull sect with its culture of female submission.

There is more to this story than meets the eyes. That show needs to be cancelled and all monies left over put into the coffers for the victims. Fuck Huck!

Being molested in your home by your own family members is far more damaging than by a stranger. You can hate the stranger for what they did to you. You can avoid the stranger and feel pretty comfortable that "it" will never happen again. You get love and support from those you love. When you are molested in your own home, in you own bed, in a common room that you have to go to on a regular basis--that memory always lingers with you. The memory of the assault. Will it happen again here? You can't avoid your perp. You will have to spend time together. You will have to do errands together. You wonder will it happen again now. You can't sleep comfortably in your own bed--what if I fall asleep and he comes in? You worry about keeping others safe, and become hyper sensitive to the looks given to a younger sibling. Always in the back of your mind you are scare for yourself and for others you want to protect. But you need to be a good girl and smile and pretend that none of it really mattered, and that you love your perp. If you didn't love your perp, then you are the bad one--Jesus expects us to forgive. What power the perp has over you. No matter how many times you suffer, you must forgive your perp again and again. When you perp is a family member, you will not receive love and support from your family. You are looked at as a co-conspirator as creating this problem. How did YOU allow it to happen. You can't expect to be able to share your feelings about what happen, they want to forget about it. Also, your behaviors at home will start being examined as being the reason it happened. Did you walk out of the bathroom with a towel on? Was that bathing suit you wore at the lake too revealing? Having a perp live with their victim is continuing the abuse for the victims. The perp needs to go, and should only return when they accept 100% responsibility. The family should be supporting the victims and not protecting the perp. Josh's apology sounds more like a lawyer's apology and not a sincere one from someone who acknowledges how he truly screwed up him family. This wasn't breaking a dish that was passed down for generations, that people are sad about. This is especially hard for the daughters who are being raised to give their body over to their spouse at the time of marriage. No premarital sex permitted, no premarital kissing even. Can you imagine how these girls must feel as if they are damaged goods? To hear that family preach that message even after they knew 5 of their daughters had been violated by their son, it must have been damaging to them. To not be able to kiss and hug a man that they love and intend to marry because it is a sin, but to have to put up with groping brother and to forgive him is asking too much.

My perp lived in our house- he and my older sister had married 2 years earlier (just after he molested me) and they had to move in for a while. It was horrific and I will never forget my many months of paranoia. I didn't ever want to be home alone with him in the house. He never touched me again, but he was a peeping tom. Nobody knew. My mother even had him teach me to drive. I'm surprised we didn't crash, I was so preoccupied with fear. 20 years later, when I finally told her, she went nuts on him. And my sister, who was in the middle of divorcing him, told me she probably would have married him any way. He of course, denied anything at all happened. I'm nearly 50. He is the father of three of the most important children (and their children) in my life. And I hate him. Forever. Unforgiven. Unforgotten.

  31. Fondles sister while reading a book to her.8:31 AM

According to the police report released by InTouch, Josh’s father Jim Bob (referred to in the report as “James”) first learned of Josh’s behavior in March 2002, when one victim approached Jim Bob and said that Josh touched her breasts and genitals while she slept.

Jim Bob appears not to have acted on the accusation. In July 2002, Josh, then 14 years old, admitted to the behavior to his father, prompting Jim Bob to “discipline” Josh but not report the incident to the authorities.

In March 2003, according to the report, Josh fondled a victim while he read a book to her. Jim Bob was made aware of this and several more accusations—victims accused Josh of touching their breasts and genitals while they slept, and sometimes while they were awake.

The police report suggests that four of Josh’s sisters were victims. In 2002, there were five sisters living in the Duggar house: Jana, then 12; Jill, 11; Jessa, 10; Jinger, 9; and Joy-Anna, 5. http://defamer.gawker.com/the-web-has-known-about-josh-duggar-for-years-when-did-1706258269

Interesting details from a Huffington Post story: a forgotten letter in a book? WTF? (A TPM story includes describes the letter writer as a 61-year-old female)

A 2006 police report, which was obtained by In Touch before its destruction, indicates that family patriarch Jim Bob Duggar knew as early as 2002 that Josh Duggar -- who was 14 at the time -- was accused of sexually abusing an underage girl. The teen was ultimately accused of inappropriately touching five underage girls, some of whom were his sisters, between 2002 and 2003.

Police did not find out about the allegations until 2006, when they were tipped off to a letter discussing the incidents, the AP reports. A family friend had lent another person a book, and the letter was stuck inside.

The police report obtained by In Touch indicates Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar told police in 2006 that they had disciplined their son themselves.

The couple allegedly said that they sent Josh Duggar to a “Christian program” that “consisted of physical hard work and counseling.” Michelle Duggar later admitted that they actually just sent him to live with a family friend to help with a home remodeling business, according to In Touch."

SO... a letter in a book, an email to Harpo Studios prior to a Duggar family appearance, police reports and investigations.

Bigger and better coordinated cover-up than it first appeared.

I can only guess that "the book" was a magical bible that those idiots insert some written prayer between certain pages so that God will somehow see it and grant them a solution to their sin. Yeah, he solved their problem for them, didn't he? Just more proof that you've got to be a real ignorant moron to think that way. They were hoisted by their own retard, so to speak.

      Delete
  42. Huckabee said it, and I've read it in so many of the comments of the Duggar supporters: the victims want to put it in the past. Josh has "confessed" and he's "not doing it any more" (how do they know that, exactly?) and those of us without sin should be the only ones casting stones.

How do they know that the victims want to put it in the past? I admit my google-fu isn't very good, but I've been searching for a statement by the Josh Duggar victims, and so far as I can tell, they haven't released any statement whatever.

Incidentally, Josh was just fine with his position in the Family Research Council until this information came to light. Um, if he's truly sorry for his "sin," why would he even accept the position? Being a child molester sounds like an automatic disqualification to me. He's not sorry he did it, he's sorry it's come to light. His wife claims he told her before their marriage? Really? Their cult is so male-dominant that girls are raised to obey smilingly and cheerfully, because "god put men over women and women should obey or they're offending god." Frankly, I wouldn't believe Josh's wife on this matter if she swore it on the Bible she claims to believe in- because that Bible has been used to train her to obey unthinkingly. And it's so sad for the victims who want to put it in the past and move on with their lives.

I am serious about the question of the victims wanting to ignore it and move on. Can anyone find such a statement from the victims? And if they can, how can we believe it? Once again, girls are TAUGHT TO OBEY, mindlessly and cheerfully and smilingly. We can't believe them, because if they don't obey cheerfully, they've been taught, they are offending God who placed parents- especially male parents- in charge of them.

Years ago- I think they were on 16 kids then- I saw a picture of the family surrounding Michelle's hospital bed. Michelle was holding the new baby, Jim-Bob was grinning, and not one of the girls were smiling. Their expressions ranged from "indifferent" to "depressed." Well, they knew what was coming. Michelle would care for the baby for one month and hand it over to them to raise so she and Jim-Bob could get to work on the next one. All those girls have been put to work as maids, laundry maids, cooks and nannies. A new baby is just work for them, and they know it.

After that, Jim-Bob started insisting on posed photographs only in the hospital, or pictures taken from the TV show. The kids have been told when there's a camera around they need to smile and be cheerful.

Seriously. Read some of the information from women who have escaped the quiverfull movement. Not to be smilingly, cheerfully obedient will get you a beating. It's scary.

We don't know what the victims want. And because of their cult, the victims don't know (or can't express) what they want.

Very insightful. Also brings to mind who is actually supervising this large group of children, together 100% of the time, with such a wide range of developmental stages. A 14 year old boy molests his younger sisters, who are also responsible for cooking, cleaning and doing laundry for him and the family while while providing childcare for the youngest children, stocking the pantry, etc. He leaves for 4 months, then is back in the house with them. What could be wrong with that? He's sorry, they're pressured to forgive him, and meanwhile it's back to work, work, work.

If not , Eat Shit and post it on you tube, or STFU. First of all, it went on over a length of time, second, they confessed to their preacher and to the big guy in the sky. third, TLC didn't know and continued to pay them. Add in that the letter written by Jim Bob to the Police never got reported because they lost it.
Don't whine about them being judged, they're being piped into our homes on cable, held up as the perfect christian family, because they chose life, you know the spiel.
