Recent Gallup poll shows that Liberals are now as numerous as Conservatives in America. And that my friends is only the beginning.

Courtesy of Washington Post:

You may not have realized it, but a large cohort of Americans did something brave this month. For years — in some cases, decades — these lonely, marginalized souls had repressed their shameful feelings, hiding them from the world.

Then May came along, and they finally decided to come out of the closet.

As liberals.

That’s right: A large chunk of Americans recently decided to come out as “liberal” — socially liberal, to be specific. As a result, for the first time on record, self-proclaimed social liberals are no longer outnumbered by their conservative counterparts.

That’s according to a new Gallup poll that finds the shares of American adults considering themselves “socially liberal” and “socially conservative” each total 31 percent. (The remaining respondents either called their views “moderate” or had no opinion.) Gallup has been tracking these categories since 1999, and the latest numbers simultaneously signify the highest share ever recorded for liberals and the lowest recorded for conservatives.

Okay now we're talking.

I have been waiting for this day most of my life. Finally, liberals are finding their voice and standing up to be counted.

I remember when Ronald Reagan and "Moral Majority" turned the word "liberal" into a pejorative used to insult people who failed to recognize that America was the apple pie craving, Jesus Christ loving, red, white, and blue enshrouded, country that they believe God had made just for them.

And in our cowardice we failed to stand our ground. Instead we decided to call ourselves "progressives" as if that were going to distract the Right Wing from their constant attacks on everything we hold dear.

But it looks like finally liberals are going to their windows, flinging them open, and shouting "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

After all folks it is not the conservatives who move this country forward, with their death grip on the past and fear of change, it is the liberals, who are always looking forward and wondering what is just over the next hill, or waiting for us in the decades to come.

Does anybody really believe that the Founding Fathers were conservatives? I mean come on, what is more progressive than starting your own country?

No my friends, if you are a liberal, now is the time to stand up tall and straight and have the courage of your convictions.

And if you need further inspiration just look to the young people all around us, who overwhelmingly self identify as liberal, and who seem unaffected by the self doubts that plagued their parents and grandparents.

These millenials know that the future is theirs to shape, and they are already preparing to do so.

And if my own daughter serves as an indication as to where they are taking us, trust me they have ideas so progressive that it will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight up.

Personally I am more than ready for what is to come. But then again, I NEVER stopped wearing my liberal badge with pride.

I can only imagine! I hope they have the fight in them, they'll need it. Some of us oldsters are more than ready to hand it over to them. I hope they realize it will take more than ideas; the big money behind those who will fight them is daunting. It may come down to strength in sheer numbers.

    1. Well, I'm a Progressive. My all-time favorite president is TR. Or has been until now, anyway.

I tend to use the term Progressive to make clear my opposition against Regressives. Though an Unabashed Liberal, I also call myself a Progressive in the same way that I call myself a Secular Humanist. Why? Because First and Foremost I am a Realist. By covering all bases I am hoping to get people to understand that unless we weave together the somewhat differing strands of our political and philosophical positions, we will be not be able to unite under the banner of Reason and Logic to move this nation into the Future.

If Sarah thought she could grift more money from liberal folks, she would instantly become a liberal spokesperson.

I think our country's major population is just sick and tired of the Republicans! It's the same way in Alaska!

The Republican's do not represent the majority any longer. Alaska just recently elected a Democrat for their largest city - Anchorage - which is a huge turning point.

Now, it's time to get rid of Chenault, Meyer and Anna Fairclough (has a new married name now) in Alaska who are all Republicans that are ruining the State of Alaska!

Can hardly wait to work to get the voters out in 2016 and put folks in office that will actually listen to the people and turn things around.

With Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren with have two fierce fighters for the common good. No matter how this shakes out, they will have awakened many who have been deceived by the greedy merchants of both religion and finance.

This is great news! Don't forget that in Texas, the large cities voted BLUE, probably both times for Obama. Texas cities are suffering badly right now from the floods; much more than the National news is telling. Abbott brought the National Guard out, thank goodness, but nothing can bring back all the homes and lives lost.

  10. Long overdue!
Most people are sick and tired of the double standards of the far right. Look at the Duggers, claiming to be upright religious quiversful tea baggers, when they knew incest was going on under their roof. The Palins, pretending to be religious, yet they have unaccounted kids, grifters, sexual abstinence...oops I mean unwed mother, alcoholic fights...and too many other things to mention. Then you have all these Republican elected officials running on the religious ticket and are always get busted for homosexual acts, sex with children and/or tax evasion etc...

So today, with Bernie officially in the race, do we get to come out of the closet as Socialists? Because that is what I really identify as. A Socialist.

Come on out, it's not so bad. I've been a socialist for ever! Too many people on this planet to live otherwise. We can't live with "every man for himself" or "survival of the fittest" in these days and times. We need to work together or it won't work.

How can one be happy if others are not?

Agree. It's also very hard to pigeonhole those of us left of center on the political spectrum. Many of us are social progressives, supporting causes such as non-discrimination and gay marriage, and pro-environmental causes, but are fiscal conservatives, wanting tighter reins and government spending and not being supportive of overreaching social welfare programs. It's tough to have just one label for everyone left of center, or right of center for that matter. Not everyone right of center is a crazy evangelical fundy Tea Bagger...

We may not see anything change as long as republicans control Diebold paperless voting machines. There is a reason why we are seeing less and less coverage of exit polling on election day.

I'm 62. Came to political awareness with JFK's campaign in 1960, having just turned 8. Being Catholic and going to Catholic school, of course I was a JFK Democrat... but as I got older and learned more about politics -- and the world -- I identified as a liberal and voted for the most liberal candidates that I could. Always have, always will stand up and call myself a proud liberal.

I think female child molestation amongst these Quiverfull/ Dominionist/ traditionalist Christian sects is actually systematic. It stands to reason that making women feel at the mercy of the males in their lives is actually an attempt at training them to be submissive.

I don't mind either term Progressive or Liberal, they both make it perfectly clear what direction I want our country to go, what kind of world I want for my kids, and when the time comes, my grandkids. I'm so proud of our liberal youth today. They came out in droves both elections, some weren't even voting age yet and asked if they could participate in any way possible. My son't friend got his first vote and cast it proudly for President Obama. But what amazed me most, and I'm sure you've seen it in your daughter as well, is how very much they know about all the candidates and their platform, where they stand on the issues that effect them most, then they volunteer, use social media, any tool at their disposal, and gotv. I saw young people carrying folding chairs when they tried Voter ID laws, not for themselves, but to help the elderly wait in long lines. They brought snacks, water, and sugar in case diabetics felt their sugar drop, but it saved their place in line. I was always politically active, but never to this extent at their age.
