Republican presidential candidates struggle to name the greatest President still living. (Spoiler alert: They usually defer to a dead one whose initials are RR.)

Saint Ronnie
Courtesy of CNN:

It's a simple question, but one that stops Republican presidential hopefuls in their tracks: Who do you think is the greatest president alive today?

CNN posed the question to several White House contenders gathered here recently at the Freedom Summit, a daylong conference with conservative activists ahead of next year's primary in this crucial early-primary state.

"Obviously the greatest president of my lifetime is Ronald Reagan," said Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

"I'll leave that to the people to decide," said Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, which is his guaranteed go-to line for questions he doesn't want to answer. "Certainly the greatest president of recent generations was Ronald Reagan."

"I was a big fan, a very big fan of Ronald Reagan," real estate mogul Donald Trump said.

Ronald Reagan, as you might recall, has been dead for 11 years.

So the LAST great American President as far as the Republicans are concerned has been out of office since 1988?

They do realize that their party has held office twelve years in total since then don't they?

The reporter, Chris Moody, goes on to explain why he thinks that these GOP presidential hopefuls find this question so challenging:

They can't say Jimmy Carter, whose presidency is synonymous in GOP circles as weakness, or President Barack Obama, a man whose legacy they all have spent years trying to vanquish. Bill Clinton is a Democrat and the husband of Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton -- so he's out.

That leaves the two Republicans: George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, father and brother, respectively, of Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida who is preparing his own bid for the Republican nomination. And an endorsement for a Bush could be construed as affirmation for Jeb Bush by proxy.

They also know that if you say George W. Bush is the greatest living president, well, then you're on camera saying you think George W. Bush is the greatest living president, and Democrats will have a field day.

Wow! That is a conundrum for them, isn't it?

Gee maybe they should try to run somebody in the future that they can someday identify as the greatest still living President of their lifetime.

It of course that won't be any of these pinheads, but you know maybe someday.

There's a part of me that fears the Palin machine has leaked this story (that will likely turn out to be a non-story) in an attempt to create buzz and interest around these two low-life's. They NEED publicity and so far they're not getting much.

The fact this information about his previous marriage comes and goes from his wiki page, doesn't make sense. If they really don't want the info posted there, why not lock the page?

Something doesn't pass the smell test with this entire set-up. This family is shameless and I put nothing past them.

I guess I am still confused as to why it is a big deal if he was married or not previously. It is quite possible his ex, if true, doesn't want to be harassed and bothered, and requested herself to be blacked out of the picture. You guys really are nuts.

Talk about nuts, you people are as fucking delusional as anything I've ever seen. But keep sending her millionaire self your social security. She NEEDS it to help her decide...HaHaHa. Idiots.

    7. I'm guessing that the omission is an issue here because it's an odd thing to omit. How do you erase an entire marriage. And now the tug of war on the Wikipedia page...that may be the stalker scuffling with the Wikipedia 'editors'.

Dakota did not tell Bristol about his wife, and she did not tell him about her "extra" children.

This upcoming marriage has been blessed by Satan.

And let's not forget, Reagan was not a good President. And this collection of GOP candidates is just flat embarrassing. I'm telling you, Romney is going to get back in and he will lose a third time. If I didn't dislike republicans so much, I would feel sorry for them.

Bobby Jindal himself said not so long ago "We will never attract the smart people" That is the ONLY statement he has made that is true. Their contenders are a pathetic group. Most are in it for the $$$$ and would pull a Ted Nugent if they thought they were close to getting the job. They do not want all the hard work involved. The religious freaks are too extreme, I do not think THEY even believe their stupid speeches. Santorum should run for Pope. Maybe the "smartest man in the world" (Newticles) will step in at the last minute and save them? Is he still with wife #3 or has he moved on?

  7. All that dithering about why they can't choose a living republican? Okay,. I get that.

But self-limiting their choices to dead republicans didn't help. It doesn't change the fact that they picked Reagan instead of, say, Eisenhower.

What a pack of gibbering goobers.

  8. Well, you know you've got a real problem, when there have been 10 republican presidents in the last 100 years, and of those 10, 6 have served two consecutive terms (yes, counting Tricky Dick who resigned as a result of the Watergate breakin), and you CANNOT claim a living republican president worthy of the label "greatest living republican president." If your best president has been dead for 46 years (Dwight D. Eisenhower), and the base to which you appeal (older, white, self-identified christian), is shrinking, PERHAPS you'd better rethink your policies. Just sayin'.

Jonathan Chait had a really good piece on this. Republicans are venerating Reagan, but the policies he pursued would label him a heretic in the Republican Party today. Ironically, the recent president who most matches the policies Republicans say they want is George W. Bush. So they're in a bind, and they've remade the historical image of Reagan into something ahistorical, something much closer to Bush the Lesser.

They revere Ronald Reagan b/c he was the prototypical modern Republican - a religio-corporate whore with no regard, even disdain, for the common good. The policies he implemented continue to cost us hundreds of $billions if not $trillions every year. I freely admit some smug satisfaction in watching how his actions ultimately enabled the lunatic fringe to destroy the viability of the Republican party that backed his morally and intellectually repugnant policies. Had winning elections not been replaced by stealing and buying them, the party of Reagan would already have achieved their well-deserved status as a historical footnote.

Ted Cruz obviously doesn't understand what an interview is:

"I'll leave that to the people to decide," said Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, which is his guaranteed go-to line for questions he doesn't want to answer.

We get to decide who Ted Cruz thinks is the best living president? OK, I think HE thinks Obama is the best!

(The correct answer to the question is a two-parter: the one alive who had the best presidency is Bill Clinton. The one alive who is the greatest individual is Jimmy Carter.)

  14. If Ronald Reagan was alive today, the right wing would hate him. I honestly don't see their wet dream affair with Ronald Reagan. Are Conservaclowns really that stupid (well, I know that Sarah Palin is really that stupid), or do they just make up their own history?

“We establish no religion in this Country, we command no worship, we mandate no belief. Nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate. All free to believe or not believe, all are free to practice a faith or not, and those who believe are free and should be free, to speak of and act on their belief. At the same time as our Constitution prohibits state religion, establishment of it protects the free exercise of all religions. And walking this fine line requires government to be strictly neutral”. Ronald Reagan

“With the right to bear arms comes a great responsibility to use caution and common sense on handgun purchases. And it’s just plain common sense that there be a waiting period to allow law enforcement officials to conduct background checks on those who wish to purchase handguns”. Ronald Reagan

Ronald Reagan gave out huge tax cuts after he was elected. He then had to raise taxes ELEVEN times to make up for it.

And they can't name Clinton or Obama even if they wanted to.

No one is going to name Carter.

That squealing laugh you hear is Bonzo laughing at the corner the GOP painted themselves into. Now HE was the best president ever, right Sarah? lol

Speaking of idiots, Nicholle Wallace, on the View, was trying to defend the bushies. She said "I twerked with GWB for twelve years, and he's the most honest, sincere men, one of the best Presidents........." and went on to defend Jebbies five day one man "I love my brother" carousel rides.

What some people say and do for work is stupid and damaging beyond repair. Hand in your woman card, Nicholle.
