Brave Willow firefighter loses home to the very fire he is fighting to stop.

Neighbor walks one of Leo Lashock's dogs by what remains of Lashock's home.
So last night somebody sent me an e-mail with a Daily Kos link attached and asked me to please post something about this story.

I don't usually take requests, but this time it was my pleasure.

Courtesy of the Daily Kos:

A valiant and unselfish fire captain in the town of Willow Alaska has been fighting fire, without end, since Sunday. Sometime during the week he realized the smoke he saw in the distance was his own home.... his truck.. his dog trailer. Everything.

Thanks to neighbors, his 17 dogs were rescued, and were returned to their owner today amid the smoldering ruins of the rest of his belongings.

His name is Leo Lashock. He's 51. He's a fire Capt , a recreational dog musher. And a hero. If you have a few bucks to send his way, he could use them. And he deserves them. His mailing address (PO Box) is readily available on Zabasearch. To read more about Leo, the Sockeye Fire and the brave firefighters battling it, go to ADN.com. This was posted without Mr. Lashock's knowledge or permission. Thank you. This is the best thing you'll do today.

As it turns out Lashock's mailing address is not "readily available" however there is a Facebook page for the Willow Dog Musher's Association which has information for those wishing to help out.

And here is the Alaska Dispatch story about Lachock for those who want to know more.

The poor guy really did lose just about everything, except 17 of his dogs who were rescued before the flames arrived. (Three are still missing.)

I don't often suggest that people send money, and you can respond however you want to here.

However I will say that these people are being devastated by these fires, and it seems especially unfair that a man who has been on the front line since the day they started should return home to find virtually everything he owns destroyed.

Thanks for posting this. Such a good man and a pleasure to donate to him after the seemingly endless news stories about mass shootings and children being killed playing with guns.

Since it seems that nothing is ever going to be done about true gun control in this country and the problem only gets worse each day, each week, each year, while the nuts take over our lives, I long for decency and trustworthiness and in this fireman those qualities reside. I've never been to Alaska, never met this man, but I want to concentrate on what's good about the United States and this man is a great example.

12:57 is talking about those pizza assholes who got thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars for refusing to hypothetically serve pizza at a hypothetical gay wedding.

Thanks, I was wondering, too. Yes, haters will rake it in, but we need to show support for the real heroes of the country. More airtime from the media on these people that risk it all for us, yet in this case, lost so much himself.

Anyone got a GoFundMe page or anything, not everyone has paperchecks anymore.

Such a heartbreaking report on the Willow fire. I despise PayPal but so happy there was a link to sending a check by mail to the group. I marked mine for Lashock. Doubt it will help all that much but wanted he and others to know that we in the lower 48 were aware of their tragic losses and want to help.

I have a comment not related to this post. But do all the Palin kids have names of the actual places they were conceived?
    Track(snowmobile/an actual racetrack)
    Bristol(lay by the bay)
    Willow(in willow,Ak)
    Piper(mile high club)

Thanks for posting this, I'll send some money his way. I have tremendous respect for firefighters, and yes, the term "hero" does apply. He's got great neighbors, sometimes things like this bring out the best in humanity. Saving animals, especially during a fire is brave and the right thing to do.
A similar situation happened here, a firefighter was responding to a car fire, only to find it was his parents who got severely burned. He went on autopilot and did help save them, then the reality set in and he broke down. They survived and face a long road to recovery.
Check your batteries, get carbon monoxide detectors, and have fire extinguishers near your furnace, fireplaces, kitchens, they may give you enough time to escape, Don't try to extinguish a fire yourself,, get out and leave it to the heroes. .
