Fox's Todd Starnes interviews Franklin Graham about Supreme Court decision on marriage equality so you know this will be ridiculous.

Courtesy of Right Wing Watch:

While it is a sad day for America when the Supreme Court will "endorse sin," Graham vowed that "I will never recognize it in my heart" because "God gave us marriage and God does not change his mind."

Graham went on to warn Christians that "you had better be ready and you had better be prepared" because the wholesale persecution of Christianity will now be unleashed, as will, ultimately, God's judgment on this nation.

"I do believe that God's judgment will come on this nation," he said, noting that just as God brought judgment upon the nation of Israel in the Bible, so too will He bring judgment on America.

Of course Graham's assertion that marriage was given to us by his Christian god is absurd.

In fact marriage, both polygamist and monogamist, existed many of thousands of years before Christianity, and even Judaism.

Not only that but there are societies that do not even recognize a deity where marriage is just as important as it is to religious assholes like Graham.

Christians seem determined to take ownership of marriage, as if the marital unions of those from other religions or secularists were somehow illegitimate by comparison.

It is that kind of arrogance which is causing people to leave the Christian church in droves.

  2. Place your bets now: earthquake, tornado or hurricane - whatever the next natural calamity, it's surely 'God's punishment' for gay marriage. Never mind that for the last 11 years flagship Massachusetts has refused to fall off the continent and drown in the North Atlantic.

These fools do more to spread atheism than if its 'soldiers' went door to door. Keep up the good work, Todd and Frankie.

Seems to me that there have been a lot more natural disasters in those red states that have been fighting gay marriage than in the blue ones who already passed it long ago.

Maybe God IS sending a message, but it's the message that they should finally get their rightwing asses in gear and give same sex couples equal rights!

Franklin Graham's whole hysteria schtick about God's judgment would have a lot more credibility with me if he gave up his freakin half-million-dollar annual salary from Samaritan's Purse and his private fuc_ing jet and started bemoaning how we treat poor people in this country. His Bible has exponentially more verses about how to treat poor people than it does on homosexuality. Or at least my Bible does. Maybe he's excised the parts he doesn't like from his.

Franklin Graham may find himself in a ethical dilemma like old stool of being a hypocrite when it comes out that he sold his plane to a known "Pimp".
Already if people were paying attention they would wonder WHY this hypocrite hangs around with a brawling, swearing, drinking family not to mention the Father is a PIMP! The daughter has HOW many babies? Saw a pic yesterday of the stool in Hati with her head down and John Coale looking at her like WTF at a preggo ready to pop Barstool after DWTS in Hatti, Franklin Graham is a hypocrite of the highest order.
I can't wait until the Palin curse is upon his hypocritical ass!

Will Franklin Graham follow the teachings of his Bible and call for the stoning of Adulterers and unwed mothers of bastard children? Has Franklin Graham forgotten that he was accompanied by a known unwed/pregnant mother and an adulterer (Bristol Palin and Sarah Palin) during his 2010 Samaritan's Purse trip to Haiti? A pox on both their houses.

I remember when the Supremes ruled in Loving vs. Virginia whereby interracial marriage was allowed in all States (at the time, there were 12 States where interracial marriage was a crime - with jail time). The Charlatans of the day said the same crap they are now spouting about same sex marriage.

Blah, blah, blah........... How are two people who get married, who just happen to be the same sex, preventing anyone from practicing their version (hypocritical as it is) of Christianity? It is not.

Don't like gay marriage? Don't have one. Don't like abortion? Don't have one?

The only persecution they will face will be at their own hands, in the loss of congregants that finally wake up and question their BS. "God's judgement" on the US will more likely be for the imperialistic andf environmentally raping policies we've promoted in the name of "Freedumb", not because the Supreme Court finally recognized everyone has a right to love and marry who they choose.

Why don't christians spend their time talking to each other about the sins the commit? Why isn't Franklin in Wasilla talking to his friends the Palins about Bristol's sinful behavior?

As a christian believer in a merciful loving God, I do not agree with Franklin Graham, and can barely manage Todd Starnes.

There are all sorts of sins. Sins of the heart, pre-meditated sin, original sin (Garden of Eden). Every individual, including Starnes and Graham, have in their lifetime, sinned. I haven't a clue about homosexual 'sin' because I don't have family members, nor myself have an attraction to those of my own sex. However, I totally can put myself in their shoes and understand that these attractions are real, and that many know they have them from early on childhood. God created these children, loves them, knows what they are going through (they feel isolated, torn, despondent sometimes). If God does not change what they are, then he sees them and if they are hungry for Him, he'll meet them where they are. He created them. If there are issues he doesn't agree with, He knows they can't change themselves. Every person has 'issues' they can't deal with on a daily basis (including myself) and if none of us our 'righteous' and the Bible says our cleaness is like filthy rags to a Holy God. Therefore, I conclude as a saved by grace Christian that He knows their hearts, and that they can still seek Him, and it's my duty to love them just as much as I love heterosexual friends.

Starnes and Franklin NEVER address the 'sin' whereof really is an abomination for todays New Testament Christians to God. The New Covenant, through Jesus Christ for all men, says this in the Book of James: "But he giveth more grace wherefore he saith, "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devi, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. Speak not evil one of another, brethren.

We know about the 7 abominations (OT) which do not mention same-sex but do mention pride. We know about how no man is sinless (NT). If God judges nations today, He would have judged the nation way long ago, with the age of permissiveness and drugs and rock and roll, if He still operated under the OT without his Son. But, now the Son is a new covenant and it goes without saying that this group of self-righteous self-made Starnes and Graham and their ilk make a nice little living off of condemnation on national TV. They are getting paid to be God's Bouncers, trying to keep others from entering into heaven, judging and pointing the finger and relegating fear to everyone and blaming LG's for any natural disasters that hit us. THey are way off the charts and yes, people are leaving these churches in droves.

Speaking for myself, I'm not interested in ANY religious beliefs being used to inform, or debate, ANY political issue.

I am much more interested in the Hopi world view than the Christian one, but neither one belongs in discourse about public policy.

We are a nation of laws. Talking about God, or Spider Woman, when debating these laws is not relevant.

10:10's commentary was valuable for me because I have a very large extended family who DO think religion should shape public policy and law, and they DO quote the Bible at anyone who disagrees, and the only way to get them to begin to question their views is to question their understanding/ interpretation of the Bible. Anything you have to say to them would be "blah blah blah fishcakes." For those of us who love our fundie relatives and want to be able to converse on their terms, these kinds of insights are extremely helpful.

    Speaking of right wing assholes:

Conservative enough? Jeb Bush's Right Angle

It's about time we tossed out the conventional wisdom on Jeb Bush.

This is for you, the Tea Party-aligned Republican who views the former Florida governor and likely presidential candidate as a centrist squish. And it's for you, the independent-minded Democrat who might see Bush as an unthreatening moderate.

Jeb Bush leans much further to the right than either of you thinks.

Dig deeper than his embrace of Common Core education standards or his open mind on immigration. Unwrap the pretty packaging of the compassionate conservatism he has recycled from his older brother's White House run 15 years ago.

No, GOP, biblical Marriage was not between one man and one woman

The freak-out by the Republican presidential candidates over the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage provokes me to revise and reprise the points below. Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee have formally pledged: “We will not honor any decision by the Supreme Court which will force us to violate a clear biblical understanding of marriage as solely the union of one man and one woman.” Sen. Ted Cruz also called on Americans to ignore the SCOTUS ruling.

Does that mean the rest of us can repudiate the decision making W. president in 2000, and can refuse to recognize corporations as persons?

In any case, the Bible doesn’t actually say anything at all about homosexuality, since it is a form of identity that only came into being in modernity. (Same-sex intimacy has been there all along, but in most premodern societies it was not a subculture, though medieval male bortherhoods were common and in South Asia there were hijras).

But wackiest of all is the idea that the Bible sees marriage as between one man and one woman. I don’t personally get how you could, like, actually read the Bible and come to that conclusion (see below). Even if you wanted to argue that the New Testament abrogates all the laws in the Hebrew Bible, there isn’t anything in the NT that clearly forbids polygamy, either, and it was sometimes practiced in the early church, including by priests. Josephus makes it clear that polygamy was still practiced among the Jews of Jesus’ time. Any attempt to shoe-horn stray statements in the New Testament about a man and a woman being married into a commandment of monogamy is anachronistic. Likely it was the Roman Empire that established Christian monogamy as a norm over the centuries. The Church was not even allowed to marry people until well after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, since it was an imperial prerogative.

Ancient scripture can be a source of higher values and spiritual strength, but any time you in a literal-minded way impose specific legal behavior because of it, you’re committing anachronism. Since this is the case, fundamentalists are always highly selective, trying to impose parts of the scripture on us but conveniently ignoring the parts even they can’t stomach as modern persons.

    1. In Exodus 21:10 it is clearly written of the husband: “If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish the food, clothing, or marital rights of the first wife.” This is the same rule as the Qur’an in Islam, that another wife can only be taken if the two are treated equally.

This reminds me of my ancestor, Anne Hutchinson, who was banished by the Pilgrims in Massachusetts because she said that God's grace was given to all, and wasn't a grace given only to those whose deeds he approved of.
The early Pilgrims were pretty harsh, and separate sects broke off pretty quickly from their black and white set of rules.
Anne H. and her followers went on to help found Rhode Island.
Massachusetts eventually became a fairly tolerant state, after several hundred years. Not only was it the first to declare gay marriage (first by its Supreme Court, then by referendum), but we have no death penalty (the "state" has no right to kill one of its citizens), and was the first to create universal health care (thanks, Mitt). We're still thriving and having a wonderful time in the Bay State. Come visit sometime, Sarah, and learn all about Paul Revere's ride.

So gays having legal civil marriage rights will lead to Christian persecution. Holy fucking Christmas cake! These guys really like to parade their stupidity and meanness. This kind of clueless, disingenuous (and dangerous) arrogance played a big roll in leading me toward atheism.

It's occurred to me that awareness of successful, fulfilling gay marriages may cause many women in the church to question the whole patriarchy thing. I wonder if this is the real fear about gay marriage...this and the whole 'we can't bully gays any more without being criticized' whine.

  31. Seriously, the Grahams believe that marriage between loving same gender people is a threat to Christianity. Check in your own glass house preacher and family!!!!!

"Billy Graham’s grandson Tullian Tchividjian has resigned from his pulpit at Coral Ridge Presbyterian, a high-profile church in South Florida, after admitting he had an affair. He released the following statement to The Washington Post: "

“I resigned from my position at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church today due to ongoing marital issues. As many of you know, I returned from a trip a few months back and discovered that my wife was having an affair. Heartbroken and devastated, I informed our church leadership and requested a sabbatical to focus exclusively on my marriage and family. As her affair continued, we separated. Sadly and embarrassingly, I subsequently sought comfort in a friend and developed an inappropriate relationship myself. Last week I was approached by our church leaders and they asked me about my own affair. I admitted to it and it was decided that the best course of action would be for me to resign. Both my wife and I are heartbroken over our actions and we ask you to pray for us and our family that God would give us the grace we need to weather this heart wrenching storm. We are amazingly grateful for the team of men and women who are committed to walking this difficult path with us. Please pray for the healing of deep wounds and we kindly ask that you respect our privacy.”
