Jeb Bush touts his pro-life stance by bringing up his interference in the Terri Schiavo case. Seriously?

Courtesy of McClatchy DC:

Bush, who converted to Catholicism for his wife, Columba, said his faith is an “organizing part of my architecture,” as a person and, as an elected official. He said when he became governor he was “shocked” at what he said was the “total lack” of regulations at abortion clinics and pushed for regulations on the clinics.

He said he also signed a partial birth abortion ban, led a fight for a constitutional amendment requiring parental notice for abortions and signed into law a bill that required 48-hour notice to a parent or guardian.

And he defended his role in the Schiavo case, including his support for a law that ordered doctors to reinsert a feeding tube into a comatose woman six days after it had been removed under a court order. The law was later struck down as unconsitutional.

“When I was asked to intervene on behalf of a woman who could not speak up for herself, I stood on her side,” Bush said. “I stood on the side of Terry Schiavo and her parents.”

Man I have been waiting for Jebbie to stumble into this one.

This courtesy of Politico

It started as a private legal back-and-forth between her husband and her parents. Before it ended, it moved from circuit courts to district courts to state courts to federal courts, to the U.S. Supreme Court, from the state legislature in Tallahassee to Congress in Washington. The president got involved. So did the pope.

But it never would have become what it became if not for the dogged intervention of the governor of Florida at the time, the second son of the 41st president, the younger brother of the 43rd, the man who sits near the top of the extended early list of likely 2016 Republican presidential candidates. On sustained, concentrated display, seen in thousands of pages of court records and hundreds of emails he sent, was Jeb the converted Catholic, Jeb the pro-life conservative, Jeb the hands-on workaholic, Jeb the all-hours emailer—confident, competitive, powerful, obstinate Jeb. Longtime watchers of John Ellis Bush say what he did throughout the Terri Schiavo case demonstrates how he would operate in the Oval Office. They say it’s the Jebbest thing Jeb’s ever done.

The case showed he “will pursue whatever he thinks is right, virtually forever,” said Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at the University of Central Florida. “It’s a theme of Jeb’s governorship: He really pushed executive power to the limits.”

I think the term "the Jebbest thing Jeb has ever done" is a great description of this incredible overreach by the then Governor of Florida.

And what's more it, perhaps more than anything else, illustrates that Jeb, much like his brother George, is unable to recognize facts when they disagree with what his faith tells him is right.

And that is why he should NEVER be allowed to be President of the United States.

This is the exact reason I wouldn't vote for Jeb Bush if my life depended on it. This is how a dictator does business. No thank you. I'm glad it's being brought up again, because Teri is the first thing I thought of when they started mentioning his name as a potential candidate. Sorry, Jeb, but I'll trust a spouse to know what his wife would have wanted, not some politician with an agenda.

If his faith is such a big part of his life, how come he has affairs on his wife?? Commiting adultery is not a good part of being a Catholic, is it? Don;t kid yourselves, he is a Bush to the core, lying, cheating, entitled.

There are lots of reasons why Jeb Bush should not/will not be the President of the United States but the Schiavo case is something easy enough for most citizens to understand and to disqualify him on that alone. People to need to wake up and vet these candidates thoroughly!

You would be utterly dismayed at the clueless, shallow idiots who completely bought the right-wing propaganda that Terry Schiavo could see, talk, communicate in her nursing home bed, and villify Michael Schiavo for listening to the doctors who were repeatedly telling him there was nothing left of his wife but the shell. I suspect those are the same idiots who look at Sarah Palin and believe she's a real "hawk-ee maum" Mama Grizzly commonsense conservative who's going to save the USA.

Jeb boy sure resembles his mother in appearance and the above photo is horrible of him!

I find it disheartening when reading what he did in Florida - state government interference with individual and family wishes at the end of life.

In my opinion, he 'used' his religion and overstepped - going against the family wishes.

I have everything legally written so that the state government can NOT make me live on tubes, etc. Thank God, the laws are written better today.

Jeb Bush will NEVER be POTUS!

It never really had anything to do with religion. It had everything to do with power and the desire to please the pro-life crowd. What would he do if someone in his own family were declared brain dead?

The only good thing that came out of that whole debacle was an increase in people writing their end of life commands into their wills. I know my parents were putting it off like a lot of folks do, but that spurred them to action as it did millions of people. My husband's whole family put things in their wills regarding DNR's and no life support.

The only reason Palin would even be considered is because she is female and occasionally cleans up well. The GOP will be in a tizzy over trying to counteract Hillary's appeal....they already are!

It won't occur! Jeb's Momma already announced (awhile back) that she didn't like Sarah Palin!

Plus, everything Palin touches turns to shit!

    4. Well, Jeb's Momma changed her mind about whether another Bush should run for Prez, so...

Seriously, Bush wouldn't choose Palin if he knew about her ability to turn everything she touches, including most other politicians' careers, to elephant doo-doo.

1:05 PM Bush won't take Palin as his running mate. Remember, his own Mother came out against Sarah Palin publically. Plus, the Republicans know she is the kiss of death!

Isn’t it interesting that he “follows his faith” when it comes to topics like this, but he feels free to disagree with the Pope over global climate change. He is a cafeteria catholic who picks and chooses what he wants to believe in.

It's interesting that whenever you go to our local hospital, one of the first questions asked of a patient is if that person has written end-of-life wishes on file. You also get the same question when you sign on with a different physician. Our wishes are on file everywhere.

This may be a little OT, but his name isn't really Jeb unless he had a legal name change. How will he be listed on the ballot--as John Ellis Bush or Jeb? Maybe we need to see a birth certificate!

This made me laugh out loud because Jeb has worked so hard to disassociate himself from the Bush clan, but i find it hard to believe a nick-name on a ballot for a presidential election would not be a sore point of contention with the opposing party.

For many years, my parents were snow birds down in Florida. When Bush got Congress to intervene in keeping this poor brain dead woman alive, my parents called a lawyer and had a living will made up.

And when my Dad had a massive stroke in 2007 and was declared brain dead by three different doctors, the living will he had made it very easy to let him go. He told us in his living will to make him comfortable and let him go. My mom and one of my sisters and I made the decision together to take Dad off life support and made him comfortable as he had requested. So, he was put on the morphine drip and Dad passed peacefully at the age of 82 in 2007.

I lost the best friend I ever had that day, but it was the right thing to do. Government should not be involved in end of life decisions. Funny how the Republicans rail about the Government getting in your business and then they get into your business on the basis that the Bible told them so. Bullshit (those were actually my Dad's words about the whole Terri Schiavo debacle).

Happy Fathers Day Dad. The world has not been the same since you passed.

He should be tried for crimes against humanity.

Obviously his interest in Terry Schiavo was purely political. His conscience never bothered him when it came to his brother's invasion of Iraq and the subsequent killing and maiming of hundreds of thousands of people.

You've got to question a man's character that would blithely change his religious beliefs for his wife. A real milquetoast, certainly not leadership material. Yet, he's so strident on his Terri Schaivo bs. The man can flip on a dime.

9:09: Terry Schiavo's parents and siblings were the ones fighting to turn Michael Schiavo into a villain because letting her go was going to impact their livelihood. Like the Sno Ho, the parents/siblings of Terry Schiavo hadn't held a job in years--they toured the country being paid huge speaking fees to wail about their poor, pooooor family member.

Oh the irony! I've said it before, and it bears repeating, it's political season, and Bobbi Christina Brown is on life support, Where's John Ellis Bush? What's the difference between Bobbi Christina and Terri beside the length of time? End of Life issues are a private matter, no matter the situation. I lost my dad to cancer and we spoke at length about his wishes, and we followed them to the letter and had all the legal papers ready from jump street. He passed away surrounded by his family, as he wanted. Grief is difficult enough, but having the world chime in because of a pro life fetish at any cost is inhumane. Not to be a downer, but knowing we did our best is to do what he wished was the only consolation. Keeping a body alive because we can is selfish and foolish.

Bless you, Anita, I lost my Dad almost two years ago and remembering my last words with him today. "let it go, Dad..." His last wishes to die at home happened, and family said he was waiting for me. I don't know how you ever get over that, but humor has served me well remembering times past.

Which is why I call $arah on every damn thing she says. She wasn't even there for father's quadrupule surgery. Family means nothing to her. NOTHING,

It really pisses me off when the news reports talk about Terry Schiavo being "unconscious:" as if she failed to duck low enough and hit her head on a beam and was momentarily stunned. By the time the right-wing circus came to town, Mrs. Schiavo had been in a persistent vegetative state for over a decade, with no hope of recovery. Her brain had liquified in her skull. Her parents and siblings had been metaphorically feasting off her corpse--none of them had worked in years, because they had a cushy spot mewling at right-to-life conferences about how her horrible husband (with Mrs. Schiavo's doctors) wanted to stop feeding the rotting corpse that was Terry Schiavo, because there was nothing that could be done for her. Terry Schiavo died the night she collapsed on her bathroom floor, a decade previously. Jeb Bush inserting himself into Michael Schiavo and the doctors' medical decision was heinous and he should be in jail.
