So apparently Alaska's going broke.

Courtesy of HuffPo:

Alaska Governor Bill Walker issued layoff notes on Monday to more than 10,000 state employees, serving notice of a partial government shutdown that would begin on July 1 unless state lawmakers can agree on a budget for the forthcoming fiscal year.

Alaska is facing a $3 billion budget shortfall, worsened by a global oil price plunge, and lawmakers have been fighting for more than four months over how to fund day-to-day operations.

"The amount of difference right now being argued in the legislature is really about 1 percent of the problem," said Walker, an Independent who last year defeated incumbent Republican Sean Parnell. "We want to focus on the 99 percent opportunity we have to solve this."

The state House and Senate have differed on how much they can cut without hurting services to the 750,000 residents.

If no agreement is reached, some 10,000 workers doing a range of jobs from communications to issuing permits and certain non-emergency road maintenance would be laid off temporarily, though some personnel could be recalled for emergencies, according to government statements.

Can't say this is terribly surprising.

We all know Sean Parnell was a terrible manager, and we also know that Alaska is deeply affected by changing oil prices. After all, taxes and royalties from the oil companies make up the majority of the state's budget.

Many of us have been arguing for years that Alaska needs greater diversification, but there are a number of lawmakers who are perfectly content to suckle at the oil company teat apparently with no realization that it is going dry.

Sarah Palin was able to take advantage of higher oil prices to buy Alaskan's adulation for an extra $1,200.

But those days are over. Probably forever.

Alaska Dispatch has a list of the jobs and services that could be affected by the partial government shutdown.

Laying off 10,000 Alaska state employees is not good, but if you have to, first get rid of Sarah Palin's unqualified high school friends she got state jobs for. Those degenerates have been leeching our state money for years and don't forget to get rid of Sarah's relatives.

Real estate taxes are going to be increased in Anchorage!

I suggest the Alaska Legislature put a new law on the books that assures churches and properties they own are affixed with real estate taxes - beginning w/Prevo's - Baptist Temple! He owns numerous properties to include a church, school, teacher's homes, etc.

He's been hiding taxation for years in Anchorage!

Wow! That's 1% of the population. Not the workforce, the entire population, right?

  2. Well, with no extra money for the Palins and possibly tax hikes on real estate, maybe the Palins will finally move to Arizona where they will find they are not welcome at all there either.
Maybe this will give them a chance and balls to find out how much Sarah stole from their state.

Had there been no PFD, she wouldn't have been popular. When the chips were down, she disappeared. Who the hell would want that as president of our country?

  6. Our school district does this every time a contract is negotiated. They lay off a bunch of teachers claiming poverty, then after the contract is settled with the teachers agreeing to "think of the children" and take less, suddenly money is found. Our district has operated in a "deficit" for years and yet at the end of every fiscal year there is money left over. Their legally required rainy day fund is double the requirement. They want to triple it at the expense of teachers.

So while there may be some budget concerns in Alaska, this smells to me more like fear mongering P.R. for him to get what he wants. And he's grandstanding at the expense of people that need a paycheck to support their families.

I have an idea: tax income. Tax something. These states that think they can get by without raising revenue are as nuts as the Congressmen who think the same thing. You can't have nice things (or anything) from government when you bleed it dry.

We hope our Quitter Governor Sarah Palin is not receiving benefits from our state. Remember this?

"No, with this decision now, I will be able to fight even harder for you, for what is right, for truth. And I have never felt like you need a title to do that."
    -The Quitter Sarah Palin
    Quitter's Speech

What has Sarah Palin done for our state since the day she quit on us? The quitter said she would fight even harder for us and she doesn't need a title to do that. What Sarah and Bristol did was rape our state of money from the Alaska film tax credit that Sarah set up before quitting on us. Hmmm how convenient for the Palins, the start of Sarah's multimillionaire fortune.

In case multimillionaire Sarah Palin forgot:

"So, we are here today at a changing of the guard. Now, people who know me, and they know how much I love this state, some still are choosing not to hear why I made the decision to chart a new course to advance the state. And it should be so obvious to you. (indicating heckler) It is because I love Alaska this much, sir (at heckler) that I feel it is my duty to avoid the unproductive, typical, politics as usual, lame duck session in one's last year in office. How does that benefit you? No, with this decision now, I will be able to fight even harder for you, for what is right, for truth. And I have never felt like you need a title to do that."

My advice - keep Sarah Palin out of this subject! She quit years ago and has no knowledge or say in Alaska's government.

Plus, she's proven herself to be such an idiot throughout the past ten years!

The only problem is, it's Alaska, higher on the map than "civilized" Canada. Besides oil, just WHAT is going to bring revenue to the state?

How did the Palin administration achieve a surplus? We know Sarah, in support of Begich's bill, went after the Pentagon to replenish AK coffers when she had to pay Native Veterans when the Federal Govt let their benefits lapse. But besides that, how did she achieve surplus? Were cuts horrendous?

I am for small government and I believe there are WAY more jobs in that sector than needed. But I also believe that many governmental departments NEED more employees. We as a country have proven we're bad at prioritizing. The money from taxes is there to fund everything we NEED. I work in education. The money is there. People need to let go of loyalties and remember they have a job, for the public, to do.

Alaska you need money? Is Sarah paying her property taxes?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anonymous8:44 AM

The only tax I support is in oil. There is plenty of money there. Without it, what does Alaska have? The population isn't that high. I've noticed the most popular jobs are teachers, beauty fields, coffee, and health care. Those are the things people will never be without and as Alaskan residents, people are smart to pursue such things.

College up there isn't like college in the states. In Alaska, a 4 year school is in many ways pointless and a waste of money. You don't need a teacher lecturing to be smart.

Trades in Alaska will always be the best way to support yourself.

What a pile of jumbled crap. Is it a waste of money to go to an expensive four year college and major in theater arts? Maybe it's better to go to community college and study "coffee" instead.

(Alaska is part of "the states." Maybe a "teacher lecturing" could have taught you that.)

You are an ignorant ass and so much part of the problem. A four year degree isn't only about a job, it's about teachign you how to be a good human and a good citzien.

And $carah Palin and her uneducated family are exhibit "A" in what happend when higher ed isn't valued.

Random but one of my friends posted this and I like it:

"People make me so sick. All these little crime discussion pages on Facebook are really just gossip groups. I don't care what is going on in someone's life, no one should have to read some of the awful things I've seen being said about their family members. It isn't the public's job to comment on human frailty or judge things. If I had a family member who got into legal trouble and I had to read how they're a "scumbag" or "low life piece of shit" and how they should "rot in jail where they belong" my heart would be broken. None of these people know a damn thing about the ones the people they're talking about. Reading a vague police report doesn't give you the justification to talk down to anyone."

I have noticed myself that it is like a game for a small segment of society to obsessively comment on crime-related media stories, forgetting that everyone is someone's someone. Even the mass shooters belong to people and no mother needs to see trash written because people are...bored.

Republican majority led states across the nation are going broke. I detest the group of them in the majority in Alaska and the horrible job they are doing!

We need to vote them out of office when they are up for reelection - beginning with Anna Fairclough (has new married name) from Eagle River. She's on the current Finance Committee and plans to run for Governor of Alaska in 2016! God forbid!

Thank you, Governor Walker, for the job you are 'trying' to do in spite of the obstruction!

Vote Democratic, Independent and Non Partisan next go around Alaskans - we need new blood in the Alaska Legislature to match that of Les Gara, Tuck, etc. who are also obstructed every step of the way!

  23. So is Illinois.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't both those states have Republican Governors? Aren't they Red states? I thought conservatives were all about fiscal responsibility and family values and all that jazz.

Now how could these fiscally responsible right wing public servants have possible driven their states into the ground to the point the government is bankrupt? It couldn't be the cost of education, which they have cut, or social safety nets, which they have also cut.

Could it be they are intentionally destroying the government they tout as being too big, they are incompetent or they are just plain stupid?

Yes, I realize it could be all three.
