Yoo hoo, climate cahnge deniers. Bite me! |
A draft of a major environmental document by Pope Francis says “the bulk of global warming” is caused by human activity — a perspective aligned with most climate scientists but still highly controversial to some Americans.
In the draft, portions of which were translated by The Washington Post, the pope takes climate change deniers to task and calls on “humanity” to take steps — including changing manufacturing and consumption trends — to turn back the clock on global warming. He backs the science behind climate change, citing “a very considerable consensus that points out we are now facing a worrisome warming of the climate.”
Although he states that there may be some natural reasons for global warming, he blasts those who claim it is unrelated to human activity, saying “plenty of scientific studies point out that the last decades of global warming have been mostly caused by the great concentration of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxide and others) especially generated by human action.”
Oh snap!
That is going to really, really piss off some of our country's Republican politicians, as well as almost all of the presidential wannabes.
Gee I can hardly wait to hear what Rick "Richard" Santorum has to say about leaving science to the scientists again.
I am not religious, not catholic, i love this guy!!
ReplyDeleteDo you love that he is of the belief that a pregnant woman who needs a life-saving abortion should die instead of the fetus, even if the fetus is not viable? Because that's what his church teaches.
DeleteIN some areas he is very good but in others he is just as bad if not worse than his predecessors. He comes off as folksy and warm, but there is steel and a fanatical line in him that cannot be crossed. Anything to do with women, he absolute SUCKS.
DeleteYou'd be hard pressed to find someone who is more Catholic than Jeb Bush, who has vehemently denied both global warming and climate change, AND the role of human activity in causing same. It will be interesting to see Jeb contort himself around and distance himself from this latest Papal announcement. Hillary would be correct/well-advised to make climate change, together with economic and social/racial justice, a center-point of her campaign. Addressing both issues are crucial to the survival of our nation. The fun begins when Jeb tries to deny all of the foregoing, and claim that our nation is just fine the way everything stands today (except for a few far-right talking points and the need for more middle-east wars, of course).
ReplyDeleteJeb is not more Catholic than the Pope!
DeleteALL converts are more catholic than the pope. ALL of them.
DeleteFor once, Jesus doesn't weep.
ReplyDeleteHow does an old guy who heads an ancient religion, in an ancient country know more about science than so many Americans?
ReplyDeleteI'm so embarrassed.
He had a really good 1950's/60's high school education in South America which was built on the European model of including really in depth techincal/vocational training - so he was a chem lab tech and then worked under Esther Balestrino (PhD and alas one of the deseparacidas) in her chem lab. Yeha, someone who really "did" science.
DeleteSo not only is the pope well educated with a strong science background, but most Americans don't even have a good middle school grasp of science. See for example http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ851875.pdf (Appalachian teachers' understanding of physics concepts) Not to pick on Appalachian teachers, it's pretty much the same everywhere in elementary schools in the US- not to mention home schools.
DeleteHe still promotes some abhorrent beliefs. It's ironic that he professes concern for the earth, when the religion he's the head of prohibits birth control.
DeleteI'm not very good at navigating a computer, and thereby, the internet. Do you think someone could post that picture of Ricky on his Wiki definition of Santorum? That picture is just too, to.
ReplyDeleteIt'd be a shame to waste it.
Fun idea, Jonathan Sands! Wish I knew how to get that done. Hope someone else out there can though. LOL
DeleteEven better, Gryph, I've been waiting for you to address this with your thoughts. :-)

Oy, dig that 80's look on Rick.
ReplyDeleteThat's not the 80s. It's the 70s.
DeleteI beleive his name is spelled Rick (googleit!) "Santorum."
ReplyDeleteWow. Santorium looked as sanctimonious when he was young as he does now.
ReplyDeleteOMG that photo of Santorum should go around the world! He looks like a typical dork and I would bet was not a liked guy when he was in school. Creeeeepy!
ReplyDeleteLove Pope Frank! He knows so much more than the Republicans we have circling our country. Way, way past time to vote as many of them out of office as possible in 2016!
But he totally agrees with Santorum on preventing women from having reproductive rights.
Delete"Thou Shalt Not Kill"
DeleteHow many ways do you suppose Pope Francis could misunderstand that?
Richard "warned" the Pope ahead of time that he was wrong on this issue, and there he goes, defending science. To quote a famous republican who's not ashamed of his name, "What a snob!"
ReplyDeleteCaveat, because, you know ....."No offence to Pope Francis" intended, .
Pope believes in a virgin birth. Pope believes he is infallible. Pope believes men have control and women are to be controlled.
ReplyDeletePope's opinion of science is worthless to me.
THANK YOU. That's exactly how I feel.
DeleteReally. Do you really think 'they ' believe all that crap?
DeleteThey just keeping up the 'skeer'.
This situation is just too rich:
ReplyDeleteWe've got a nation with a majority of its citizens claiming to be "Christians."
One of the basic principles of Christ's teachings was that mankind is to be a good steward of the Earth which was given them.
Why is it that people who are NOT Christians, are having to work so hard to get the "righteous" to simply follow the words of their supposed God?
Or for that matter, to get them to care for the poor, the sick, and the elderly--and to love their fellow man?
You just cannot claim to be a Christian, if you adamantly refuse to do ANYTHING the Lord commanded.
Just as many right wing politicians are hardly public servants, they interpret steward of the earth to be owner of the earth to use, abuse, profit and squander as much of it as possible for personal gain.
DeleteYUP.
Deletedowl
A good Friday fish eater like Santorum should know the Pope is infallible. lol. To disagree makes him one of those damned smorgasbord Catholics.
ReplyDeleteInfallible only on matters of Church dogma.
DeleteWhen running for POTUS last time, Santorum inspired a Facebook page by his some of his former clasmates at Carmel High School in Mundelin, Illinois. It is NOT in support of him! You to may share the fun!
ReplyDeletehttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Carmel-Catholic-Alumni-For-Equality/168760256521107?fref=ts&ref=br_tf
stluisix at the C4P is losing his shit over this action by the pope.
ReplyDeleteIt's fun to watch one of the angriest "catholics" I've ever encountered go nuts. The man is simply full of hate for anything or anyone who does not conform to his narrow world view.
If you haven't seen it, you HAVE to watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlHb_9rJSjw
ReplyDeleteANd I'm so glad Pope Francis appears to have a sense of humor!
Thanks for that.
DeleteI'm starting to like this Pope, at least his stance on science. Poor Ricky knew the Pope is coming to America, and was tlrying to finagle a way to have a private audience. I think I'll be working from home during his stay. The city's getting ready for the influx of people, and the traffic's going to be gridlocked for miles.
ReplyDeleteThere's a large LGBT community in center city, not too far from Logan Circle, where Pope John Paul spoke. I'd be interested to see how Pope Francis navigates the issue or not.
